Report: Eric Wright fails 49ers physical, cut by Bucs

Eric Wright AP

The strange tale of cornerback Eric Wright has taken another turn.

News that Wright was traded by the Buccaneers to the 49ers for a conditional draft pick broke on Friday just before we also learned that Wright had been arrested and charged with misdemeanor DUI earlier in July. The 49ers reportedly knew about the arrest when they made the deal, but it doesn’t look like Wright will be joining the cornerback competition in San Francisco.

Albert Breer of NFL Network reports that the 49ers failed Wright on his physical which causes his rights to revert back to the Buccaneers. The Buccaneers will subsequently release Wright, which is what they were reportedly planning to do if they were unable to make a trade involving Wright in the first place.

There’s no reason given for the failed physical, which Florio suggested as a possible out for the 49ers if they decided they didn’t want to move forward with the deal, but coach Jim Harbaugh is set to meet the media later on Monday.

UPDATE 4:06 p.m. ET: “He didn’t pass his physical. He’s not with the team,” Harbaugh said at the press conference.

I’m sure Harbaugh will spew some sugar about the 49ers already having six starting corners on the roster.

  6. 1590t says: Jul 22, 2013 3:54 PM

49ers are covering their A-S-S. They didn’t do their due diligence on Wright and did not know about his most recent arrest. Not wanting to show their incompetence they publicly stated that they knew about his arrest PRIOR to the trade and decided to go ahead and make it anyway. Then they failed him on a bogus physical in order to void a trade they foolishly made in the first place.

Wow! And this guy had a $7 million dollar guaranteed contract just a year ago. Other than being accused of murder, I have never seen an implosion like this .

More likely that the 49ers didn’t know about his DUI and they’re using the physical as a reason to get out of the deal. I don’t remember him having any serious injury problems with the Bucs though it’s hard to remember whether he wasn’t playing because of an injury or because he was suspended.

  12. westampa says: Jul 22, 2013 4:00 PM

9/10 “suspicion of DUI” = drugs. Rumor in Tampa was he was a pill head. Whatever the problem is has cost the guy a ton of money.

  13. YouMadCauseImStylingOnYou says: Jul 22, 2013 4:01 PM

“Failed his physical” sounds to me like “The backlash of trading for a guy who just caught a DUI was a lot worse than we anticipated”.

  14. Stiller43 says: Jul 22, 2013 4:03 PM

Possibly the 9ers didnt know of the arrest, but figured this was the best move for PR rather than publicly saying the bucs duped them (shaming the bucs and themselves im the process).

This way, everybody wins (except Wright).

  15. swampcannons says: Jul 22, 2013 4:05 PM

This will work out fine. The Bucs can use the $$ they saved by Wright being a turd and sign Mike Williams to the deal that he deserves.

  23. metrocritical says: Jul 22, 2013 4:24 PM

In spite of some degree of physical talent, Wright has bounced from team to team because he is more trouble than he is worth at every stop. 49ers obviously and quite transparently did a quick backpedal once they realized their blunder and this utterly predictable move was a shock to no one except maybe Wright himself.

Meanwhile, iknoweverything continues to show no knowledge of anything whatsoever, be it facts, logic or how to post opinions free of grammatical or spelling errors.

The Bucs have every right to cut him, but the “failed physical” by the 49ers seems a little suspicious. Wright had been a participant in the Bucs OTA’s during the off season and appeared to be healthy. I would not be surprised if Wright and the Players Association filed a greivance against the 9ers for “failing” him, even though he is probably healthy. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Wright end up in NY, or Oakland.

  38. dstep24 says: Jul 22, 2013 4:46 PM

Oh man. And to think Harbaugh could’ve had the dynamic drinking trio of Aldon (knives sold separately), Ahmad (bottles for free) and Eric (PEDs included).

    Oh wait…he’s above reproach.

  39. sillec28 says: Jul 22, 2013 4:49 PM

Fans of other teams hate the Bucs? Why? Except for the early Dungy years plus 1979 and two of Gruden’s years they’ve been the “gimmee” game on almost everyone’s schedule.

  40. bengaliballer says: Jul 22, 2013 4:54 PM

Not sure why this guy gets so much attention. He’s not a good CB. He’s been getting fried by mediocre WR’s since his Cleveland days.

  41. cchicinfan says: Jul 22, 2013 4:57 PM

    To: peoplesrepublicofdabayarea

Why would the “idiot” Seahawks sign him, we already have 3 of the best starting corners in the league (Browner, Sherman, Winfield) and 2 excellent backups that would start on most teams, even yours (Thurmond and Lane).

  42. japadacktle49 says: Jul 22, 2013 5:01 PM

  44. trollhammer20 says: Jul 22, 2013 5:10 PM

The fact they even considered this guy, with all his warts, indicates to me they aren’t exactly doing backflips of joy over their current options at CB.

  45. djalakas25 says: Jul 22, 2013 5:12 PM

Once again…. i am a seahawks fan. Seattle fans shut up and stop comparing yourself to 49ers. You sound like the annoying little brother. Your not doing that team any favors. Let the play speak for itself. Act like you’ve been there before.
49ers fans shut up also… if you talk so much about your legacy. You don’t act like it. You have been there before. You arent acting like it

  46. jjackwagon says: Jul 22, 2013 5:18 PM

Seahawks left the AFC West where they couldn’t compete, to go to the NFC West where they still haven’t done anything. And their fans are as moronic as ever. SMH.

  47. hess97 says: Jul 22, 2013 5:20 PM

my guess (from diehard gold blooded niner fan) is he failed a drug test, and no longer was worth the risk that he could revive his career playing for a contender and playing behind a world class pass rush.

that opportunity would be good enough to straighten up a pac man jones, but its not to be, bc in my guess he’s not clean.

  48. pop562 says: Jul 22, 2013 5:27 PM

The flocks of pigeons flying to the 49ers forums are endless…especially the Seadderall She-Talks fans….because when it comes to yapping and bickering away…the She-talks fans are like females…they keep on talking and talking but NEVER won anything since their franchise was born. Facts are facts…Seadderall She-talks are perennial losers….even their franchise career win percentage is below .500.

  49. sourdoughsam says: Jul 22, 2013 5:34 PM

… or maybe he actually failed his physical. I really doubt the Bucs would trade a player that could possibly be suspended for a few games and not disclose that. I think it’s a lot more likely that he didn’t pass the pee test.

  50. 64post says: Jul 22, 2013 5:35 PM

It did cost them a nickel to change their minds. It would have been a insult to the real Eric Wright, a pro bowl corner that played for SF years ago to have a loser like this guy on the team.

  51. pmars64 says: Jul 22, 2013 5:44 PM

The 49ers/Seahawks fued is hilarious! After all of this, I’ll bet neither team wins the NFC this season. Kapernick will get planted by somebody while waiting for his minor league and greybeard WRs to get open. And defenses will figure out how to stop the midget QB for the Seahawks.

  52. granadafan says: Jul 22, 2013 5:58 PM

This “rivalry” between the Seahawks and the 49ers is one way. The 49ers and their fans have barely noticed these upstarts from the north. Meanwhile the rainy stepchildren are jumping up and down like the whiny little brothers desperate for any sort of attention.

Sea-dull has never been a rival of SF or the Bay Area in any way in sports or culturally. The Bay Area has won numerous championships in pros and college by the 49ers, Raiders, Warriors, Giants, A’s, CAL, Stanford. Seattle with the Seahawks, Supersonics, Mariners, Huskies have won nothing. OK, the Huskies shared a national championship but their team was as dirty as any Urban Meyer or Jimmy Johnson team.

To quote someone, “What’s your deal!”.

  53. themackstrong says: Jul 22, 2013 6:04 PM

Oh man this is too funny. I thought the whiner organization knew about his DUI arrest by doing their due diligence. Jim Harbaugh is a joke, not half the coach and man his brother is..

Detroit is the one place where Wright played well and wasn’t sent packing (they just didn’t want to pay him what the Bucs eventually did.)

Too bad for Wright that the Lions can’t afford to take a guy with character problems. They are starting to clean up/grow up and aren’t at the top of the knucklehead list this off-season (though they aren’t officially off it yet.)

  57. japadacktle49 says: Jul 22, 2013 7:34 PM

Seattle hags give it a rest you losers for the love of God you beat the 49ers once out of the last four games & I think the last time you won the division it was that epic 7-9 season stick to what you guys do best and that’s lose. Go 9ers the reigning NFC & NFC West Champions!

  58. securb2013 says: Jul 22, 2013 8:00 PM

but then you claim they ‘checked him out’. how did they check him out? training camp hadn’t opened.
