The strange tale of cornerback Eric Wright has taken another turn.

News that Wright was traded by the Buccaneers to the 49ers for a conditional draft pick broke on Friday just before we also learned that Wright had been arrested and charged with misdemeanor DUI earlier in July. The 49ers reportedly knew about the arrest when they made the deal, but it doesn’t look like Wright will be joining the cornerback competition in San Francisco.

Albert Breer of NFL Network reports that the 49ers failed Wright on his physical which causes his rights to revert back to the Buccaneers. The Buccaneers will subsequently release Wright, which is what they were reportedly planning to do if they were unable to make a trade involving Wright in the first place.

There’s no reason given for the failed physical, which Florio suggested as a possible out for the 49ers if they decided they didn’t want to move forward with the deal, but coach Jim Harbaugh is set to meet the media later on Monday.

UPDATE 4:06 p.m. ET: “He didn’t pass his physical. He’s not with the team,” Harbaugh said at the press conference.
