Buccaneers sign Peyton Hillis

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed running back Peyton Hillis.

Hillis, who played for the Chiefs last year, signed shortly after working out for the Bucs.

Tampa Bay will be the fourth stop in the 27-year-old Hillis’s career, having previously played for the Broncos, Browns and Chiefs. Hillis had one outstanding season, in 2010 in Cleveland, when he carried 270 times for 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns and added 61 catches for 477 yards and two touchdowns. But in his other four seasons he’s been a mediocre player.

In Tampa Bay, Hillis will have a chance to earn the No. 2 running back job behind starter Doug Martin. Hillis will be competing in camp with veteran Brian Leonard, rookie Mike James and all-name team candidate Michael Smith.

Trade him to San Fran for a draft pick, they probably didn’t know he was a FA.

Mike Alstott 2.0. Seems like a good fit.

  3. onebucplace says: Jul 23, 2013 5:56 PM

If he’s ever going to be Mike Alstott 2.0 he at least picked the right team.

    Two white running backs?

The next 30 For 30: From Madden to the minimum.

  6. tampamac says: Jul 23, 2013 5:58 PM

They could do worse. I see him being the short yardage/goal line guy. One thing for sure he’s definitely better at short yardage than LeGarrette Blount.

  7. brownsalwaysrebuilding says: Jul 23, 2013 5:59 PM

Had 1 good season here in Cleveland and then turned into an egomaniac and ruined his career.

The most worthy Madden cover ever is making a comeback.

It’s the return of Mike Alstott!

  10. kosarsmyidol says: Jul 23, 2013 6:08 PM

Don’t forget that they also have Jeff Demps, who was acquired from the Pats in the Blount trade.

  11. osidebrownsfan says: Jul 23, 2013 6:12 PM

At least being in Tampa he may not get strep throat as easily.

  12. flexx91 says: Jul 23, 2013 6:13 PM

Don’t forget they quit at mid-season and still don’t have a QB.

As a Panther fan, let’s see what you have.

  14. mackcarrington says: Jul 23, 2013 6:21 PM

Why does he have to be Mike Alstott 2.0? Why cant he just be Peyton Hillis? Do you expect your starting defensive tackles to be Warren Sapp 2.0?

  15. granadafan says: Jul 23, 2013 6:30 PM

Is there room in the locker room for his ego?

  16. gadzod says: Jul 23, 2013 6:31 PM

That Madden cover really messed him up…..

  17. vibesid says: Jul 23, 2013 6:35 PM

The Big Boy still got it. Let him hammer the line and show what he can do.

  18. saints12013 says: Jul 23, 2013 6:37 PM

You know what, this is a good signing by Tampa. They needed a back-up RB to Doug Martin. I actually thought they were going to sign Ahmad Bradshaw but he went to Indy. With the erratic play of Josh Freeman, Tampa needs all the offensive weapons they can get. Martin, Jackson, Williams, and now Hillis. Smart Move…….

    1) Moon usually talks QBs
    2) Maybe he thinks those people were right

But I get your point bigot. Out of all the people in the world, Moon is the one you expect to comment? There are thousands who think he was overrated. Why blame Moon for that.

  23. brownsalwaysrebuilding says: Jul 23, 2013 6:52 PM

As a child I showed my father a Warren Moon football card that had a full moon in the background.

He asked to see the Marion Butts card.

Special agent Hillis is really doing undercover work right now for the CIA, this is his body double they signed. Ask Kansas City how that worked out for them, they were singing the same tune last year with Charles and Hillis.

  26. abusementland says: Jul 23, 2013 6:55 PM

I am so glad Packer fans voted this guy as the cover over ARodge. The Curse is not very forgiving.

  27. pilot2011 says: Jul 23, 2013 6:56 PM

He still scares me. I remember him trucking Charles Godfrey and Sherrod Martin; torching the Panthers a couple years ago up in Cleveland.

Compare him to Mike Alstott !!!???

You kidding me !!!??? Awful comment.

Oh…. your a Jets fan, makes sense.

Because to you Rex Ryan is Vince Lombardi I’m sure

Hillis is the NFL’s equivalent of a one hit wonder…

  31. blogatron2000 says: Jul 23, 2013 7:11 PM

Those of you Bucs fans who are expressing optimism…you sound just like a lot of Chiefs fans when KC signed him. Hate to rain on your parade but Alstott he ain’t and it’s not even close.

    Good luck with this one…

  32. jack3dsd says: Jul 23, 2013 7:21 PM

Hillis to Alstott isn’t a bad comparision both are big power backs with a lil bit of deceptive speed both wear number 40 and now they are both linked through the bucs. nothing wrong with that

  33. discosucs2005 says: Jul 23, 2013 7:27 PM

Trying to decide whether Hillis or Vince Young is the worst Madden cover athlete.

It’s a tough call, but at least VY at least is over zealous in complimenting his team (dream team) instead of dumping all over them.

  34. pacodawg says: Jul 23, 2013 7:29 PM

Browns were ahead of the curve releasing this stiff.

  35. bengalbuck says: Jul 23, 2013 7:33 PM

I’m thinking special teams player at best or simple training camp fodder at worst.

I don’t think this signing is anything to get excited about.

He always reminded me of Alstott, atleast when he was in Cleveland. Lmao with the Rex and Lombardi comment.

  40. rowdymon says: Jul 23, 2013 9:20 PM

I can’t believe he’s only 27. In NFL drama years he is 723.

  41. stevent92 says: Jul 23, 2013 9:29 PM

That is some Madden curse. From the cover to Tampa. It doesn’t get much worse than that.

  42. ytownjoe says: Jul 23, 2013 9:59 PM

For once the Browns got it right. They cut a bum instead of signing a bum.

  43. dragonrider2300 says: Jul 23, 2013 10:39 PM

From Rotoworld: “The Bucs will look at Peyton Hillis as both a tailback and fullback.
Hillis was a lead blocker in front of Darren McFadden and Felix Jones at Arkansas. He’s played primarily tailback in the pros. Hillis will likely battle Brian Leonard for one roster spot. Doug Martin still doesn’t have a clear handcuff as Hillis, Leonard, Michael Smith, and Mike James all vie for the role.”

Hillis does fit the mold of a short-yardage RB. Hillis has averaged only 3.6 yards a rush in the last 2 years. Hillis may make the roster as a FB/short-yardage guy, but will only see limited carries overall. He may vulture a TD or two from Martin but don’t expect a huge impact, either on the field or in fantasy football.

  44. whysomanylosers says: Jul 23, 2013 11:41 PM

Bucs dont need him to be Alstott 2.0. He just needs to be a decent goal line back and someone that can spell Dougie….

  45. onebucplace says: Jul 24, 2013 12:10 AM

To the guy asking why he has to be Mike Alstott 2.0 — well he’s white, wears the number 40 and plays like Alstott. Of course Alstott had more than one good year and was on course to be a HOF before that piece of trash Gruden ruined his career. As for Hillis the media and fans started calling him Alstott 2.0 while he was in Cleveland — also he was on the cover of Madden, it’s not like he’s a low profile guy. Come in, drag some people around, run over some others and don’t be an egomaniac and this area will love you. However HE should never say he’s Alstott 2.0 — then you’re instantly probably the most hated person on the Bay area — but the fans can hope (or mock) with the nickname.

The Bucs must be sure that HGH testing will not begin this season

Got that right. Heck, he was damaged goods before that one great season even ENDED.
