Buccaneers, Visanthe Shiancoe to meet

The Buccaneers are hosting free agent tight end Visanthe Shiancoe on Tuesday, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported.

The Buccaneers currently have six tight ends on the roster, with Luke Stocker, Tom Crabtree, Nate Byham and ex-Jaguar Zach Miller among the options at the position. However, they could stand to add a little more depth. Dallas Clark, the Buccaneers’ top pass-catching tight end in 2012, is an unrestricted free agent.

The 33-year-old Shiancoe appeared in four games for New England in 2012, all as a reserve. An 11th-year player from Morgan State, Shiancoe (6-4, 250) has caught 243 passes for 2,677 yards and 27 touchdowns in his NFL career. He’s played for the Giants (2003-2006), Vikings (2007-2011) and Patriots (2012).

In addition to tight end, running back is another position where Tampa Bay understandably may want to strengthen its hand. According to Jenna Laine of SportsTalkFlorida.com, free agent Peyton Hills is also slated to visit the Buccaneers on Tuesday. Hills, 27, rushed for 309 yards and one touchdown on 85 carries in 2012 for Kansas City.

    .

The current crop of TE’s is unlikely to strike fear in the hearts of defensive coordinators around the league.

Shiancoe was overrated. Sorry, as a vikings fan I never was interested in him.

He had a decent run in Minnesota, but that was a few years ago. It’s not like the Luke Stocker/Tom Crabtree combo is exactly going to strike fear into the hearts of MLBs around the league, but is Shiancoe really going to change that? He’s been a non-factor for a few years, and it’s not like your average 33-year-old is likely to have a sudden career resurgence.

As for RB, Brian Leonard looks to be a capable backup for 5-10 carries/game, and the Bucs apparently really like Mike James out of Miami, who has gotten comparisons to Earnest Graham, who had several very nice years in Tampa. Don’t really see the RB need.

Id be more exited if the bucs brought in some depth at the defensive line and secondary positions.I don’t understand why they are ignoring fact our d line is injury prone and all we have is revis in the cb position he can’t cover everybody at the same time and is unproven after the ACL.

Are the Buccaneers that desperate for a back up behind Tom Crabtree?

They would be better off putting their 3rd tackle out there than stinko the former viking.
