Anthony Spencer will have knee surgery

Robert Turbin, Anthony Spencer AP

There’s more bad news for the Cowboys defense.

They’ve already lost defensive end Tyrone Crawford for the season and defensive tackle Jay Ratliff for the indefinite future and now they’ll also be without defensive end Anthony Spencer for a while. Spencer aggravated a bone bruise in his left knee as the Cowboys opened up training camp, an injury that the Cowboys didn’t think was severe¬†although Spencer admitted surgery was a possibility.

Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com reports that it is more than just a possibility. Archer reports that Spencer will have surgery on the knee later this week. The recovery time is expected to be between two-to-four weeks for the player who has received the Cowboys’ franchise tag in each of the last two seasons.

That’s obviously enough time for Spencer to get well without missing any of the regular season, but that’s probably a limited amount of relief for a team that saw their defense totally gutted by injuries last season. With three players expected to be major parts of the defensive line already ailing, the Cowboys will likely be keeping their fingers crossed that everyone heals as quickly as possible and that they can go a few days this summer without anyone joining the already injured in the trainer’s room.

UPDATE 2:56 p.m. ET: Nick Eatman of the team’s website confirms Spencer will have surgery and pegs the recovery time at three weeks.

So maybe, just maybe, the Cowboys pre-season expectations will be tempered just a little bit?

On paper, when healthy they could have a vicious defense. Yes I can call it down the middle when it comes to the Cowboys. It’s not that hard, try it.

That may have him back before the first regular season game but with a new defense and moving to DE, the weeks missed are valuable.

    OH MY!

How dare the coaching staff and medical personnel put this young man in danger like this, it could have ruined his career! How will he ever recover from this? I expect up to the minute updates as this story evolves over the next 8 months! Questions must be asked, people must be held accountable!

Hum….very interesting! I don’t think this knee injury, when you need to have it scoped, suddenly happened during the first two days of practice. You could have had this done during the off season. Was this by design to get out of training camp…..makes me wonder Mr. Spencer!

I’m a skins fan, but I’ll admit, even if its a cowboy, i hate to see a player get hurt in the offseason. Things happen during a game that can’t be avoided, but random injuries during practice are tough for players and fans to stomach.

Smart move by the GM to tag him instead of signing him to a cap killing contract. How about that for you Jerry Haters.

Doesnt matter, the CowGirls will still suck, Romo will still crack under pressure, and Jerray will continue to run his playtoy into the ground. You gals in Little D might as well just sit this one out…
