Wharton meeting with Panthers today

Travelle Wharton might not be out of work long, and he might not have to meet many new people.

Released by the Bengals Monday, Wharton is visiting with the Panthers today, according to Pat Yasinskas of

Wharton was basically cut because he was too expensive to keep as a backup in Cincinnati, and last year’s preseason knee injury didn’t help his situation.

But the Panthers, if the price is right, could use him immediately.

Wharton, 32, spent eight seasons with the Panthers, starting 99 games at both tackle and guard. The Panthers could use at least some tackle depth, though there’s no reason to think a healthy Wharton isn’t an upgrade over either right tackle Byron Bell or right guard Geoff Hangartner.

I couldn’t disagree more. Wharton was an All-Pro in 2008 and a complete dud in his other 7 years here. He’s only an upgrade if he’s learned how to hold and get away with it.

    Wharton to the Panthers?

And are the Panthers a real NFL team? They sound/look like one of those made-up teams in that Al Pacino football movie.

You can see Bryon Bell getting better with every game he plays. I would expect him to have a great year this year.

Wharton will be a all-around back up if he signs. Hangartner and Kugbila will play right guard.

Even if he doesn’t start, the Cats can always use an experienced backup on the O-Line.

Panthers could use some depth, and he would provide that

The right side of the Panthers line (Byron Bell) was just simply awful last season. But their new GM used his first two picks on DTs.

Cam could probably benefit from a better offensive line.
