Bucs not sure if Darrelle Revis will play in preseason games

Cornerback Darrelle Revis will be on the field when the Buccaneers hold their first practice of training camp on Thursday.

Whether or not he’ll be on the field when the team plays preseason games is another question, however. While confirming that Revis is going to participate in practice on Thursday, coach Greg Schiano said that the team is still figuring out whether the individualized plan the team has designed for Revis as he returns from last year’s torn ACL includes any action in the exhibition season.

“I haven’t decided yet,” Schiano said, via

The Vikings provided a blueprint for getting a player coming off an ACL tear ready for the regular season without any preseason action with running back Adrian Peterson last year, so it’s not too unusual to hear the Bucs considering the same route. While no two injuries are exactly the same, the goal of having a player at game speed without undue risk of a setback is identical as are many of the concerns about Revis’ ability to cut on his rehabbed knee.

We’d expect the issue to come up again once the Bucs have had a chance to see Revis practice, but there’s a strong chance that Revis’ first action as a member of the Bucs will come against his old Jets mates in the first week of the season.

Smart move. Revis is a pro and the Bucs have one of the best trainers in the NFL. I have no doubt he will be ready to put up the “no fly zone” come the start of the regular season. Besides, that means more reps for Banks and the rest of the Bucs young secondary!

For those uneducated commenters, it’s the same way Adrian Peterson was hamdled. There is a track record for these things.
