Raiders take No. 24 from Tracy Porter, give it to Charles Woodson

AP

When Charles Woodson returned to the Raiders in May, he said he was hoping to get his old No. 24 jersey from Tracy Porter, who was assigned the number when he signed with the Raiders in April.

Now Woodson has succeeded in getting No. 24. And Porter doesn’t sound particularly happy about it.

Porter wrote on Twitter that the No. 24 jersey had been “taken” from him, putting the word “taken” in all capital letters, to emphasize that it was neither given nor purchased.

Porter did add that he’s not mad, but he also suggested that he doesn’t think the uniform number situation was handled appropriately.

Woodson is a generous man who has given millions of dollars to charity, so it would be surprising if he were so stingy that he wouldn’t give Porter anything for the No. 24 jersey. But that seems to be what Porter is saying.

  1. Sorry Tracy Porter…

Great interception in the Super Bowl, but you ain’t no Charles Woodson.

But, Woodson should make a donation to a charity of Porters’ choice.

  2. Not a great way to endear yourself to a new locker room (and yes it is a new on to him, I doubt anyone is around from when he was there).

  3. Tracy, see Frank Tripuka to see how it’s handled.

    (Retired number…..”given” to Manning)

    But….lets say I’m Woodson for a moment.

I think I would send some $ to KIVA.

    On behalf of Mr. Porter.

I think he would get past himself in a hurry.

  4. I like Woodson in spite of the fact that he’s a wolverqueen but this is a rude, disrespectful move by he and the organization.
What happened to asking and negotiating a fair price?

  5. Well I don’t know about ‘us Raider fans’, but I don’t have a ‘your guy’. I could careless about a jersey number, win a freakin ballgame.

  6. He should have pulled a Mark Barron and gotten cash for Woodson to give it up, wait not everyone is as stupid with their money as Darelle Revis

  7. Dude. You haven’t played a game yet as a Raider. And that hasn’t been your number anywhere in your career. You can’t be serious. Not even worth tweeting about.

  8. Hey Porter…Bow down, your still kinda broncoish…Don’t try to come to Oaktown with this bronco attitude. You’ve done nothing for me yet and I don’t freakin care if you make the team. Not like were going to the show this year.

I will cheer for the 53 that make it, whoever that may be. Hopefully a young, hungry and smart group. I am ready to give it a couple years. Don’t need freakin tweeting Mo Fo’s. Need freakin players!

    Late…

  9. As a raider fan i’m disappointed, the Raiders are showing no respect to joey, yea it’s Charles freaken woodson, but now how is the rest of the team suppose to respect a guy who got his jersey number taken away like that?. . .

  10. and if he doesn’t shut up, we can give him an apple and a road map in exchange for that number.

Get real ….TP…..it’s not about you anymore, it’s now about being a raider, so act like one or c-ya , wouldn’t want to be ya.

  11. C.Wood pulled rank on porter, can’t be mad at that… Lets not let it affect on field business tho and work together fellas, The only numbers that matter are are the ones in the W column…

    One Nation…

  12. Dennis Allen is a douche for not showing loyalty to Porter for their years together in NOLA especially after that pick6 in SB44

  13. Th Raiders’ jersey, No. 24 belongs to the Raiders, and is not the exclusive property of Tracy Porter – unless, of course, he wants to negotiate some of his salary back to make it so.

  14. I love Woodson and I think he should get his #24 from any team EXCEPT the Raiders. It is a bit disrespectful considering the last time he played there he was not that great. Should have made him earn it while playing for the Raiders.

  15. As a raider fan i’m disappointed, the Raiders are showing no respect to TRACY, yea it’s Charles freaken woodson, but now how is the rest of the team suppose to respect a guy who got his jersey number taken away like that?. . .

  16. Well, he has “owned” the number all the way back to… April?

I mean that’s four whole months. A guy understandably gets attached to his number during the offseason when there are no games or practices.

Porter’s the one who didn’t handle this well – I hope Woodson stiffs him

  17. How could Charles Woodson take something that belongs to him. #24 belongs to Woodson. Only person that can take that number from Woodson is Willie Brown. If Huff was still here he’ll have to give that number up too. Nothing to feel bad about, Porter.

  18. Said your “piece”????

Nah Tracy, they took it from you because at least Woodson knows how to spell “peace”.

  19. Real Raiduh fan 4eva and whereva…

The way I see it is Porter punked himself. Once he saw how the Nation felt about CWood returning! Then he should have straight up given the Jersey back!Atleast offered it up before C even had to make it known that he wanted it back. Ok maybe he didn’t see it that way! Where’s the Love? Props or Respect?

Now I can see if he just wanted 24 cause he had it with another team but come on now he had it with us! Not to mention C is a future HOF and Porter knows that we wanna see CWood back in his old 24. Kick Rocks Porter!

  20. Let’s see. After a crappy 6 games in Denver, last year, Porter has zero games under his belt as a Raider and has worn the number in what? OTA’s?

Be kind and give him a six pack for his troubles.

    Cheers, BostonTim

  21. It would be in good faith and of Charles’ character to do something in return to Porter. For all we know, Porter will have a cash coming his way soon.

  22. From the tweets I’m not so sure Woodson was involved, sounds more like he’s saying the Raiders just took it from him.

Woodson might do something yet, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt here.

  23. We the jury find Tracy Porter GUILTY of failing to do the right thing and giving the man back his jersey which he rightfully deserved. Porter put a ridiculous bullseye on himself now. If this man shows any lack of enthusiasm during training camp, everybody is gonna say it was because he had to give back the jersey number. We know what Charles Woodson did when he was here and that’s why he wears #24 again. You gotta earn your stripes here. You play your cards right and we’ll vouch for you too.

  24. Mr.Woodson 7yrs with oaktown not to mention future hall of famer. Porter 0 yrs with oaktown not a hall of famer. Why u mad bro? respect is earned not given. pay
    ur dues!

  25. So Porter never played a game with the Raiders wearing Jersey #24 right, after all he was just signed in April. I’m not sure how it’s “His” number. If he had played there last year while wearing the number then I’d see his point.

  26. Its Charles Woodson bro! Back in Black! You should have offered to give it to him on your own, the minute he showed up at the training facility. You wanna play bad ass, and just got shown who Charles Woodson is, and who Tracey Porter is. Now shut up and go make some plays.

    RAIDER NATION!!!!!!!!

  27. It maybe wasn’t handled in the best way, by being “taken”, but Porter had his chance to give the number up in supposed negotiations that were taking place. I’m sure he was offered something decent for it, and he likely held out for a bigger payday.

Surely he should have realized that having Woodson back in the # 24, is a big marketing advantage to the Raiders, drawing back the fans of his (tickets and merchandise). And I’m sure more fans would spend the money for a new 24 jersey that would be relevent in both the past and present. I think he likely overplayed his hand, and the Raiders overruled him.

In my book it’s a smart move by the Raiders, you have to fill those seats to pay these players. I like Porter, but Woodson will fill far more seats. Hopefully he mans up and plays hard, and doesn’t hold a grudge. If so, they are pretty well set on cap space next season and could pick up any corner they like if the young corners don’t work out. Besides, it’s a number. Show up and play good and people will remember Porters number.

  28. Its all about money. Raiders fans are loyal, call them what you want but they are loyal fans. That new #24 Woodson jersey will be there hottest item all season. Sorry Tracy Porter, this is a business after all.

  29. To me he doesn’t sound like a Raider himself “You Raider fans” wow sounds like a Bronco aka Donkey still any who like my dude said forget the number we can careless win some football games and stay on the field ..#RAIDER_NATION!!

  30. I am not completely sure how I feel about this. Porter should immediately stop whining and stop making a public spectacle of the matter for sure, but I agree that Woodson should donate to a charity in Porter’s name at the very least. As an organization, since Woodson has a history with them, However, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to give Woodson his number back. He is a Raider after all…..and a good one….see tuck rule footage for the most obvious reference. Haaa. Stop crying and play football you rich mofos! Silver and Black till I die. Go Raiders. Peace out.

  31. Woodson has been in talks with Porter for months now trying to get 24 back. Porter acting like he has seniority when he just got here himself.

  32. This is stupid. Tracy Porter has not played in one game wearing the #24 in Silver and Black. He was signed in April and Woodson was signed not long after. Woodson is a future HOF and has clear seniority over Porter. Woodson played 7 seasons as a Raider in that jersey, and is going into his 15th year in the NFL. Obviously he should get the jersey.

I don’t remember Woodson complaining about having to wear #21 in GB either. Sorry Porter, get over it. I don’t agree you should be paid for it either.

  33. Lol Raiders took his number from him???

Wow that’s pretty f’d up. Ain’t like Woodson had his best years in Oakland.

Enjoy Green Bays sloppy seconds Oakland.

  34. These athletes are into their numbers…it is kind of messed up of the team to give a guy a number, and then just take it away after promised because they like someone else more.

Woodson is better, but come on Raiders, handle your situations with a little class!

  35. C’mon Charles… pay him some cash, or take the
high road, and a NEW number.

Be the bigger man/respected veteran here.

  36. Im a huge Raider fan, but that has a look of not showing much class. Sounds like someone might be getting some money from jerseys sold. Now, who could that be? You get 2 chances. Either MD or RM.

  37. Am I the only one who thinks that Porter’s twitter pic looks like he wants you to smell his finger?

Yep, horrible years in Oakland. Defensive Rookie of the Year and 4 Pro Bowls must have meant much less back then.

Why don’t you continue to just root for the guys in the frat house known as Dove Valley and keep moving? Nothing to see here.

  39. Porter wore #22 in Denver and New Orleans. I’m sure he isn’t as bitter about having 24 taken from him to give to Woodson as much as he is bitter they wouldn’t take 22 from Taiwan Jones for him.

    ——————————-

With Green Bay he was a 4x pro bowler, defensive player of the year and oh yeah Super Bowl champion.

But your right, by raiders fans’ math, his best years were in Oakland.

  41. well now maybe Taiwan can ask porter to buy his #22 for the same amount of cash that porter asked woodson to give for #24, I mean after all Porter has never worn #24, he has worn #22…. I think Jones can use the money more than either of these guys.

C’mon Porter pay up the same you asked of C-wood.

Nah Tracy, they took it from you because at least Woodson knows how to spell “peace”.
    ________________________________

Nah, his usage of “piece” was correct. He stated a “piece of his mind”; in other words, “said his piece”. Saying one’s “peace” only seems to work best when one goes to church to “say their peace” to God, as they are expressing their feeling of peace in that context. For the most part “saying one’s piece” is in relation to “giving someone a piece of your mind”, or contributing a spoken portion (or “piece”) to a conversation or debate.
