Ravens cancel practice to take trip to Gettysburg

The Baltimore Ravens will take to the practice fields for the first full-team practice of training camp on Thursday after veterans reported for duty on Wednesday.

But that didn’t stop head coach John Harbaugh from getting a jump-start on team-building activities for the defending Super Bowl champions. According to the team’s official website, Harbaugh cancelled practice for the team’s rookie class Wednesday and took them on a field trip to the battlefields of Gettysburg.

In addition to the rookies, a handful of veterans – including quarterback Joe Flacco –  came along for the ride.

They were led on a tour of the site by a handful of Gettysburg historians and six members of the Maryland Army National Guard who relayed the stories of the famous battle to the players.

“What I got from it is what it takes to win a battle, to overcome adversity and keeping the big picture in mind. Keeping the focus on the common goal and achieving that goal,” linebacker Arthur Brown said.

The 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg was earlier this month. The battle took place over three days from July 1-3, 1863.

  1. Something everyone who lives in this great country should do!! Listen, and visualize what Civil War soldiers endured, and the everyday problems that 2013 Americans bitch about seem pretty damn trivial! John Harbaugh, Ozzie Newsome you continue to be Champions!!

  2. I think this is a great idea…I thought it was the first time, too, when Denzel took his team there in “Remember The Titans”.

  3. I hope they learned to think twice before the uttering the phrases “we’re at war” or “I’m a soldier” in reference to a game.

The next field trip for every NFL team should be to the nearest VA hospital. There they will learn the meaning of “sacrifice”.

  4. “What I got from it is what it takes to win a battle, to overcome adversity,” Arthur Brown said.

-after hearing his QB’s “I’ve got a lot of money and will get plenty more” speech the whole bus ride home.

  5. Gettysburg was a big part of the civil war, where families fought each other and there were more casualties in this battle than any other part of the civil war, not sure what message Harbaugh is trying to send here?

  6. They should learn about the Baltimore based plot to assassinate Lincoln on the way DC for his ingratiation and how Abe had to sneak through the city in the middle of the night. It’s a very interesting story that I’m guessing 90% of Americans don’t even know about.

  7. That’s pretty cool. I’ve been there; lots of hiking, and it’s hard to imagine how hundreds of thousands of men ran around in the hot summer under heavy wool uniforms for three days.

  8. As a kid growing up in the greater baltimore area we took field trips in school the gettysburg battlefield. Glad to see harbaugh is learning from the best!

  9. I guess it is good to give some of these stupid-ass football players a little lesson in American history. God knows they don’t know anything else but football.

  10. Want to know why we won the superbowl with an average offense and a below average defense last year bcuz we have an elite head coach who understands how to put together a TEAM. Other camps couldnt wait to grind their rookies to a pulp, meanwhile coach harbs is instilling the TEAM philosophy into his rookies. ON our way to building a repeat. Very Lombardi-esque

The Ravens are all about winning. Kiss the Ring.

  11. If Arthur Browns got all of that out of it, then he’s reading too far into it. It’s a cool field trip, nothing more.

  12. Harbaugh is such a cool dude. Player respect him, and love playing for him. He’s a winner and a champion. preparing our men for battle and putting it all in real perspective at the same time. This is Johns world and everyone around here is just living in it. Soak it in cause the nfl is gonna be ran by the Ravens for the next decade. Champs

  13. I am trying to think of something to say incorporating the Battle of Waterloo but can’t.
    😉

  14. Generals Flacco and Suggs are going to squash the Steelers just like Meade put down Pickett’s Charge.

  15. JH is a movie buff. Waterboy and Remember the Titans are part of his coaches manual.

His players are more TV buffs, shows like DWTS and The Biggest Loser (scratch that, they obviously didn’t watch that one).

  16. Crown must be in the hospital or incarcerated. Otherwise he would have immediately responded with:

    “Tell that to Charlie Batch.”

  17. crown is trying really hard to come up with clever things to say and is failing miserably. all we hear is that the ravens cant possibly repeat because of all the new faces. so the ravens organized this field trip as a team building exercise to bring the team closer. seems like a good idea to me.

There were more casualties in the Battle of Antietam, Gettysburg was less violent but an important turning point, it was the battle that stopped R.E. Lee’s invasion of the North…

  19. @cfeeley52

The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single day battle, but there were more casualties in the Battle of Gettysburg. Both numbers are horrifying.

  20. @crown – do you think it belittles you to say something nice about an opposing team or head coach? If so, you must lead a miserable life like 6lombardis or whatever he has changed his handle to this week.

I love football. Never miss a game. Know more stats than 90% of America, but realize it is still just a kids game that grown men play and make millions from
