Brady discusses Hernandez, won’t say when they last spoke

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (R) and Aaron Hernandez leave the field after and interception against the Baltimore Ravens during the fourth quarter in the NFL AFC Championship football game in Foxborough Reuters

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady opened up about some of his thoughts on former teammate Aaron Hernandez today, but he wouldn’t say whether they have spoken since the news broke that Hernandez is a murder suspect.

Surrounded by a crowd of reporters at training camp, Brady was asked if Hernandez reached out to him in any way, or if he has tried to reach out to Hernandez. Brady replied that team spokesman Stacey James had told him not to get into anything like that.

“Stacey told me I can’t comment on any of that,” Brady said. “Stacey told me — it’s a good question, but I’m not supposed to comment on any of those things. . . . I’m really not supposed to comment on Aaron.”

Brady did, however, speak about Hernandez in general terms, and about his own reaction to learning that Hernandez would be charged with first-degree murder.

“I think everyone had a certain range of emotions, whatever they might have been. But those were very personal, and I dealt with them,” he said. “Certainly it’s a very tragic thing that happened, someone loses their life. But all those things were out of the players’ control here and we’re not really part of that situation so I don’t think it does a lot for us to get too much involved.”

Brady mostly reiterated what he previously said about wanting to move on: Brady said the whole team needs to avoid distractions.

“The fate of our season is going to be determined by the guys in the locker room and hopefully nothing else,” he said. “You talk about the Patriot Way, and to me that means mental toughness, it means dealing with different situations and adversities over the course of a season and offseason and how you can put those things behind you and focus on your job.”

Losing Hernandez will make Brady’s job harder, but he sounds eager to get his job started.

I disagree with the assertion that losing Hernandez will make Brady’s job harder.

This is a guy that won 3 SBs with guys like David Givens, Troy Brown and David Patten at WR, and guys like Jermaine Wiggins at TE. In fact Wiggins had like 10 catches in the Tuck Rule Game!

Looking at who has now (Aaron Dobson, Amendola, Jake Ballard, Gronk) he can win with those guys.

Bottom line is that as long as Brady is there the Pats have a chance at a SB ring this year and every year.

  8. jagwires says: Jul 25, 2013 12:15 PM

I hate to say it, but I feel bad for the patriots. The blood sucking media is going to ask the same questions over and over and over and over again for a long time, then when they’re done with that they’ll switch back to tebow questions that have been asked and re-asked 3 million times since he came into the league.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

I don’t give a rip about the Pats either way…but come on people. What the hell else is he supposed to say? HE CAN’T COMMENT. Why reporters ask questions they know these dudes can’t answer is beyond me, unless they’re trying to get the players in trouble.

Is it a need to feel better about one’s self because they can’t find their way out of Mom’s basement?By the way since spygate-best record in Nfl, division winner 5 times, afc champs twice, loss in afc championship one other time, my guess is better than at least 30 other teams, you should know that if “youknoweverything”

    @iknoweverything and his supporters….

The Patriots have one of the lowest arrest records in the NFL, and their Free Agents that had troubled pasts, generally conducted themselves without issue. They may not have performed well on the field, but neither do a lot of other players. The NFL draft is loaded with players with a checkered past. If you think that’s a problem, blame the NFL, because they are the ones that allow them to be “draft eligible.” Where is the uproar over that? Some people like to point out that breaking a 2006 rule in one game in 2007 means that all the franchise has accomplished is somehow tarnished. WTF? Ignorant losers are everywhere I guess. And as for “what have they accomplished since 2007?” Well I think it’s just the best regular season record, 5 playoff appearances, 3 AFC Championship games, and two Super Bowl appearances.

    Ignorance abounds!

  52. lalnh says: Jul 25, 2013 2:37 PM

What exactly do you want them to say? Stop, take a breath and try to think of this in a rational way. This isn’t about football.

There is a MAJOR murder investigation going on. Whether or not they were in any way involved with Aaron on/off the field, chances are the detectives have paid them a visit and they’ve been questioned on what they know about him, do they know his “friends”, did he talk about guns, etc. Some players lived in the same neighborhood. Just by association at work, they are potential witnesses. I’m sure none of them want to be dragged into this horror story any more than they already are. If you were in their position, you would not want to talk to the press either. You’re all crazy if you think they thought he was capable of committing these crimes. I’m sure his own family didn’t think he could. This is a true nightmare for all of them, their worlds were turned upside down too. Aaron’s actions has had a tremendous impact on so many lives and have forever changed them. From Odin’s family, Aaron’s baby girl, his mother and people who believed in him. There are so many victims left in his wake.

Imagine how you would feel if a co-worker or neighbor you’ve known, had to your house, had your kids around (even at family events at the stadium), turns out to have had a whole secret life and turns out to be a murderer. It would shake me to the core. Why do we the public expect these players to stand there in front of the media and tell them how they feel? What does that have to do with football. Asking Vince Wilfork what he told his kids is none of our business. I think they should have their privacy. It’s one thing to think the guy hangs out with low lifes, but, I’m sure none of them thought he was capable of what has transpired.

I know so many of your are Pats/Bellicheck haters, but, you’re allowing your hate to keep you from thinking logically. These are all real people, not just football players. This isn’t about football. It’s a really sad, horrible story of violence.
