Gus Bradley stressing competition in his first camp

Since Pete Carroll has taken over as head coach of the Seahawks, he has made competition for roster spots and starting jobs a constant part of life around the team.

His former defensive coordinator Gus Bradley is approaching things the same way in his head coaching debut. The Jaguars have their first training camp practice on Friday and Bradley wants every player on the team to be on edge about their spot on the team.

“We have a saying in our locker room,” Bradley said, via Hays Carlyon of the Florida Times-Union. “I preached it to our players. I believe the three most dangerous words in the NFL are, ‘I got it,’ and we stay away from those words. I want our players, our coaches and the whole organization to have the mindset that ‘we ain’t ever got it,’ and we’re going to compete in everything that we do.”

Bradley said that training camp is going to be “uncomfortable” for the players, which it should be for a team that has been spinning its wheels the way the Jaguars have been doing for the last few years. We’ve seen how successful the Seahawks have been using a similar philosophy and the Jags are going to bank on things playing out the same way now that one of the architects of Seattle’s success is on their sideline.

It may not pay off in a winning season right away, but it’s hard to argue against a radical change to the way business is being done in Jacksonville.
