Panthers linebacker Jon Beason came into Wednesday with a $5.25 million base salary for the 2013 season.

The day ended with his contract looking a little different. Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reports that Beason has restructured his contract with the Panthers just ahead of Thursday’s reporting date for training camp.

There are no details about what changes were made to Beason’s deal, but it’s a good bet that the move was made with an eye on adding a player or two to the roster. The Panthers recently met with free agent offensive lineman Travelle Wharton about a second tour of duty and Wharton’s scheduled visit to the Broncos was cancelled because Wharton didn’t like what the Broncos were offering. The team has also been linked to veteran safety Quintin Mikell, who would help the Panthers at a weak spot on their defense.

Beason’s contract runs through 2016, so there are plenty of years to spread out a cap hit in the event that Beason converted a portion of his base salary to a signing bonus as part of the restructuring of his deal.
