Mike Shanahan: “It doesn’t make sense” to play RGIII in preseason

There won’t be any commemorative t-shirts for Robert Griffin III preseason games this year.

Griffin said this week that he didn’t think he’d be playing in any preseason games this summer unless coach Mike Shanahan said so and Shanahan doesn’t sound like a man who is planning to say so. Shanahan met the media on Thursday and said that he didn’t need to see Griffin play in the preseason.

“It just doesn’t make sense to play him in the preseason,” Shanahan said, via the team. “It does take some times to get back in football shape.”

The only way anybody is going to be able to see how Griffin looks on a football field before the season opener against the Eagles on September 9 will have to go to a Redskins practice to find out as the Redskins have decided the risk of a setback in a meaningless game isn’t worth any potential rewards. It’s the decision everyone expected and there will likely be a lot of eyes tuned in come Week One to see Griffin play for the first time since the playoff loss to the Seahawks.

Shanahan also announced that the team has activated cornerback Josh Wilson from the PUP list after placing him on it Thursday morning. Defensive end Adam Carriker won’t be back any time soon, however. Shanahan said that he’s expected to miss four to five months after his latest leg surgery so we might not see him at all this year.

Sending him out there in the playoffs didn’t make sense either. Why stop now?

  2. floratiotime says: Jul 25, 2013 6:32 PM

Or ever. He’s blown out his knee. He’s toast. Keep pretending he’s fine boys … it’s very amusing.

    Someone learned a valuable lesson.

  4. friscokid49 says: Jul 25, 2013 6:35 PM

nor did it make sense to play RGIII after he got hurt in the Baltimore game or in the Wild Card game against Seattle.

  5. allidoiswin55 says: Jul 25, 2013 6:35 PM

He’s stupid. No reps at game like speed for the most important position to get reps. Hmm

Sure he’s going to be ready for the season physically but watch behind mentally. How’s he going to be ready to pass in an game from practicing against one of the worst secondaries in the league. Lol

I don’t hate the skins and definitely support Robert, bc he’s a generational charger. But this is easily one of the most moronic statements made. Shanny news flash, just admit he’s to fresh off of injury to play, he will be behind at first but will catch up during the season. Acting like he doesn’t need reps ow beyond stupid self fulfilling prophecy type of stuff.

The skins fans deserve better than that bs.

If Griffin plays in the pre-season and gets hurt, the haters will revel in the fact that Shanny was a moron to put him in that position in the first place. If Griffin doesn’t play in the pre-season and has a poor outing against the Eagles in week 1, the haters will claim it is because he didn’t get any time in live action. If Griffin doesn’t play in the pre-season and blows up on the Eagles in week 1, the haters will claim that he’s not going to last the season and it was only one game.

RG3 doesn’t need the preseason….he’s light years ahead of every QB in the NFL.

  8. therealraider says: Jul 25, 2013 6:40 PM

Considering MOST QBs make a living or a “killing” with their arm, perhaps RGs Knee will force him to develop into a more well rounded player.

  9. tomtravis76 says: Jul 25, 2013 6:42 PM

It doesn’t make sense to play any of these scrimmages. Coaches can get enough from team practice. Maybe setup a controlled scrimmage against a team or two two during camp. Fans only want to see games that count, no reason to risk injury pretending these games matter to anyone except the owners pockets.

RGWheelchair will be back in IR by week 3..don’t you worry folks

It is amusing to read the comments from fan boys …

Blown out the ACL for the second time, the PCL this time, and took parts from the ‘good knee’ to repair the wrecked one … but yeah, no problem.

    It’s not Washington … it’s Fantasy Island …

More like everyone has figured out he’s a one trick pony, and is knees will be gone soon.

    Fail to the Redskins….again.

  16. shaggyjeff says: Jul 25, 2013 7:12 PM

Because he will not make it through the regular season …

  17. skinsfan91 says: Jul 25, 2013 7:13 PM

Knee repair techniques have advanced to a point where if you have the genetics and the work ethic, you can have a few knee surgeries and return to 100% eventually. Stem cells and HGH? Please, mix that with great genetics and work ethic, dudes knee can be even better eventually.

  18. gregmorris78 says: Jul 25, 2013 7:34 PM

Anyone predicting injury for Robert griffin needs to find their own team to worry about

I could just as easily say that Griffin will shred your team this year with his arm/acumen, which is likelier

  19. koolaidcircusbeast says: Jul 25, 2013 7:36 PM

RG3 asked: “How much football would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck a football?”

Shanahan replied: “I can chuck the whole thing.”

  20. jamaltimore says: Jul 25, 2013 7:57 PM

Shanny doesn’t need to sit in the tanning bed in the summer but he still does it!! Gonna be fun listening to the talk radio in dc when the wheels start falling of the slurs bandwagon and sideshow bob! #week3

  21. skinsfan91 says: Jul 25, 2013 8:04 PM

I wonder why the Jaguars don’t get the same attention we do. Considering according to the non-redskins fans on here, we seem to be on their level. Hmm, weird.

WHAT A STUPID FRANCHISE THIS IS

  23. harrycanyon says: Jul 25, 2013 8:24 PM

Every thought the same stuff about Cam Newton after his rookie season. His second season wasn’t as promising. I see the same fate for Griffin.

  24. cmm10304 says: Jul 25, 2013 8:27 PM

I love all the hate, keep it coming suckas. Announce your teams now, but you won’t because we probably beat most of you last year. I laugh everyday at these ignorant posts, just wait until we hit you with the whole playbook this year… You can’t stop thinking about us, reading about us, talking about us, posting about us! Get of these…

  25. steves11 says: Jul 25, 2013 8:53 PM

It makes sense to save RGIII for the Eagles. They’ve got to catch him to hurt him…so he’s safe.

  26. northstarnic says: Jul 25, 2013 9:20 PM

It didn’t make sense to play him when his knee was shredded either. But that didn’t stop Shanny!

  27. pflynn20 says: Jul 25, 2013 9:33 PM

Who cares. 9-7 will win the NFC East. No need to rush anybody back.

Shanahan Translation – “You must be dummer than a rock or you are a special kind of stupid if you think I’m putting my Franchise QB in a meaningless game.”

RG See you Week one baby. I’m All In! HTTR!!!!

  30. buddybowl69 says: Jul 25, 2013 9:58 PM

RG-3 is the best QB ever or ever will be. Forget Manning and his lil’ sister Eli, forget Brady & Rogers (they’ll be out of the closet soon enough), forget Montana, Young, Marino, Unitas and Jamarcus Russell. RG-3 is the man. All of the other QBs combined will not equal his records by the time he is done. RG-3 doesn’t need preseason and he doesn’t need to practice even, you can’t expand on excellence. After he retires in 30 years, football will be canceled as there will be no more excitement in the game.

Why does the potential of Robert Griffin’s failure make so many people so happy?

  32. trollaikman8 says: Jul 25, 2013 10:23 PM

    Not heard last season:

“It just doesn’t make sense playing RGIII on 2 gimpy knees and on a field in worst shape than Normandy during the invasion.”

  33. ososrule says: Jul 25, 2013 11:33 PM

Yep, definitely makes more sense to have him go down in the regular season, more disappointing that way.

  34. raiderrob21 says: Jul 25, 2013 11:39 PM

It also didnt make sense you leaving him in the game when he was hurt.

You didn’t beat the Seahawks sucka…..

  37. asublimeday says: Jul 26, 2013 2:47 AM

Didn’t make much sense to ride him into a blown knee either, but you did that…

  38. artmonk81 says: Jul 26, 2013 9:28 AM

The amount of hate people have on here for Robert is just unreal. He’s s stand up guy and one heck of a football player and you trolls can do is hate on him. We’ll see how much hate spews out of your mouths when he eventually gets his ring.
