Raiders reportedly have “high” interest in Travelle Wharton

Travelle Wharton, Trevor Robinson AP

Veteran offensive lineman Travelle Wharton cancelled his visit with the Broncos, but he could still wind up in the AFC West.

Bill Williamson of ESPN.com reports that the Raiders are interested in adding Wharton to their roster. Williamson terms the Raiders’ interest in Wharton as “high,” but there’s no visit schedule at the moment. As was the case with the Broncos, the feeling is that Wharton is looking for more than the Raiders are willing and/or able to offer him.

The Raiders certainly have a need for offensive line depth, so they will likely be hoping that Wharton’s price drops at some point in the near future.

Wharton has already visited with the Panthers, for whom he played the first eight years of his career. The Panthers just restructured the contract of linebacker Jon Beason, which opens up some cap room for them to use in their pursuit of Wharton or others. If Wharton is indeed one of their targets, he may not be on the market long enough for the Raiders to work themselves into the mix for his services.

Paying a premium price for a free agent goes against Oakland’s approach under Big Reg. I don’t see this happening.

    Left guard?

    Veldheer, Wharton, Wiz, Briesel, Watson?

We’ve put worse on the field.

Would make sense, Cooper Carlisle sucked for years playing there. Have not had a good LG since wiz retired, and it has shown. Brissel on the other side was a bust last year as well.

Best word of I can think of to describe him is “average.” Panthers used him at LT one year and it was a total disaster. They moved him to LG in ’08 and he had a great year. The other 6 years we had him, he was average. Today, at his age, you’re in big trouble if you’re counting on hm to start. He can step up in a pinch, but not a long-term solution.

I hope Bergstrom steps it up this preseason. That way it can be Veldeer, Wharton, Wiz, Bergstrom Watson.
