Tebow doing some non-QB drills in practice

If Patriots coach Bill Belichick truly wants to “move on,” from the Aaron Hernandez talk, he has figured out an effective solution.

More Tebow.

Belichick mentioned this morning that Tim Tebow wasn’t locked into playing quarterback exclusively, saying: “we’ll use Tim where ever we feel like is best for the team.”

And once practice started, that was proven true.

According to multiple tweets from reporters on the scene, Tebow was catching some passes in addition to his quarterback reps, and lining up with backs and receivers in another drill.

There were no reports of Tom Brady catching passes.

The Patriots are running short enough for targets in the passing game that anything might help.

But using Tebow as a good old-fashioned distraction might be his most valuable role at the moment.

  1. This shouldn’t surprise anyone. Tom Brady is still an unbelievable player but his only weapon has had 3 offseason surgeries. For the first time since Brady took over, they might have to rely on some trick plays and be creative to put points on the board consistently.

  2. This isn’t a shock. Patriots love versatile players. They did use Julian Edelman at corner during their Super Bowl run a few years ago.

Same with Troy Brown during their 04 run (lol he had like 3 INTs that season).

Lol he’s only a “distraction” because the media is being manipulated into focusing on Tebow by Belichick.

I have this picture of sportswriters all over the US sitting at their desks with a spaced out Homer Simpson look on their faces, drooling and moaning “Tebow burgers, mmmmmmmmmmm”

Meanwhile Belichick is chuckling to himself about how easy it is to get you guys to write about what he wants you to.

  5. People keep blaming the Jets for not using Tebow as a TE but everyone seems to forget that their golden boy refused to play anywhere else but QB.

In all honesty, no one outside of the hardcore college fans and hardcore Christians care about this guy.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++

That’s because Jesus washed his hands for him.

  7. funny how Kraft and BB are singing the we were out of the country during the Hernandez arrests
    line, rather funny isn’t it.

  8. There were no reports of Tom Brady catching passes

Great line Darin! snuck that right in there

  9. I don’t care what anyone says. We have Tom Brady and aren’t relying on Tebow to put the ball in the air 25 times a game. I actually like him on the team for his size, smarts, and character.

People act like he went 0-16 as a starter. He’s won way more games in this league than Ryan Mallet has, and he was one of the best college football players ever. If anyone can find a way to use him, it’s Bill Belichick.

  10. I can’t wait until this guy is out of the league it’s embarrassing the amount of attention he gets because of his religious beliefs.

  11. Interesting they picked him up before murdertron was arrested. Wonder what they knew before Lloyd was shot. It didn’t make sense to pick him up when they did but it makes sense now.

  12. Ganett, you believe using the QB who took the broncos to the playoffs, as a distraction is the way to go? Have you ever watched an NFL game,,,or better yet, have you ever played the game?

  13. I knew pats will use TT for their benefits, of course unlike Jets. There is nothing better than Tim to take away AH drama attention.

  14. People keep blaming the Jets for not using Tebow as a TE but everyone seems to forget that their golden boy refused to play anywhere else but QB.

  15. “There were no reports of Tom Brady catching passes.”

That’s weird, he sure seems like more of the catcher than the pitcher.

  16. the only good use for tebow is for him to keep brady from getting hit by running the sneak for him on third and inches.

The Patriots aren’t going to need trick plays to score. They’re one of the best rushing offenses in the league. They’ll just run it more.

    ____________________________

Yes, they were one of the top rushing offenses, but that was only while they had one of the scariest passing games. That makes it easier. They go hand in hand. Might not be so easy anymore…

  18. I dont think this will happen but how bad will the Jets look if Tebow becomes a consistent contributor for the Patriots.

  19. Since he now on a team with coaches with common sense and fans that can appreciate his talents he will excel. Where ever they put him he will give 100% and will not be a distraction as in the past.

  20. the only good use for tebow is for him to keep brady from getting hit by running the sneak for him on third and inches.

Um, except Tom is also one of the best at QB sneaks, so, nope… that won’t work. Tim will come in as a fullback/TE and block and occasionally catch. He’ll gain a little value and then be traded to Jacksonville when the time is right for a 3rd or 4th rounder. (Just a guess.)

  21. Harrisonhits2;

Your 11 a.m. post – good one. Belichik has always struck me as having a mild contempt for the press, not unlike Bob Knight and a few others – he always seems to have an “I’m Bill Belichik and you’re not” look on his face, and that’s fine.

And in most cases his contempt for the press is well and truly earned.

The (my) Patriots do seem to have a few problems this year, but if there is anyone who can deal with them, it is Bill Belichik. It doesn’t hurt of course to have Tom Brady as a QB.

    We’ll be fine

  22. The Patriots are running short on passing targets? way to write off players before they get a chance to prove themselves.

You play for the Patriots? It’s awesome that a player can come onto a football site to say what “we” are doing.

    Tebow is a joke.

Hope Tebow comes out and is a major contributor for the Pats. Good guy, solid work ethic and a winner.

College wins don’t mean much in the NFL and he rode that Broncos defense and Marion Barber’s 4th quarter blunders into the playoffs. Not sure how he is a “winner” at this level.

The Broncos D was ranked 24th in 2011 ….. Tebow turned that team around

  26. Training camp does not a receiver or tight end make. There are years of learning body position and footwork. This is especially true for a tight end. So no, he will not be a tight end unless the pats truly are desperate. And given the improvement in the rest of the division they may be starting to think it is close to desperation time. After all, Brady is on the downside of his career in the nfl.

I’m no Tebow fan but he has as many playoff wins as Alex Smith, Matt Ryan, Tony Romo, Matt Schaub, and Jay Cutler.

He has more playoff wins as a Bronco than Manning….

Again I’m no Tebow fan, and I agree with you wholeheartedly I just like pointing out other QBs futility… :/

  28. Patriots way of diverting Hernandez questions might mimic a Salt & Pepa song:

    Let’s talk about Tim Tebow
Let’s talk about QB and TE
Let’s talk about all the good things
And not the bad things that may be
    Let’s talk about Tim

I’m a Pats fan but I am not sure I believe this. Yes I think the NYJ probably didn’t have the best plan in place for him or possibly all the people who needed to be on the same page on bringing him in weren’t hence what we saw last year. That said, just because a player looks meh one place and great in another doesn’t mean the first team did anything wrong. Sometimes players just fit better elsewhere.

  30. It’s ironic that Tebow could be used as the distraction from Hernandez, when initially they wanted no Tebow distractions at all. ‘Guess it all works out.

  31. 8to80:
Until quarterbacks play offense, defense, special teams and do some coaching, your theory is severely flawed.
I still can’t get used to the fact that their those among fans and media who attach personal w/l records onto quarterbacks in the Ultimate Team Sport. To do so is totally inaccurate and unacceptable.
    Vince Young: 31-19.
Dan Marino: 0 Super Bowl rings.
Sorry to burst your quarterback-obsessive bubble.

Like trading for a player that doesn’t fit??

  33. How many times have the Pats been in shotgun with 3 wide on 3rd and goal from the 4? Put Tebow in that Kevin Faulk role next to Brady and even the threat of a direct snap to him could be enough to cause LB’s to hesitate in coverage on Gronk or Amendola. I don’t see why people don’t get this as being a good thing.

Valid point but that doesn’t change the fact that if Marion Barber doesn’t make 2 bonehead plays, Tebow has as many playoff wins as Koy Detmer.

  36. @1historian,

    Thanks for the kind words.

I think the Pats will be fine too and win the division again.

Belichick has the troops well under control. Nobody’s talking anything but football and that’s how it will stay no matter how many times the media ask about Hernandez.

I see Belichick using this situation to drive the team forwards as a cohesive, close unit that is focused on football and not the media.

How is that relevant? You said he “refused to play anywhere else but QB” and I provided an example of him playing somewhere other than QB. Not sure what point you are trying to make. Are you saying he refused to play some TE or FB on offense but had no problem covering punts (which is something he did in fact do)? You’re being foolish.

  38. So after 15 years playing QB, he’s going to learn how to be a TE? I’m sure his technique and route running will be superb.

And to those harping on playoff wins, keep in mind that Mark Sanchez has more wins than Romo, Ryan, Rivers, Shaub, and yes, Tebow. Shows how much that means.

  40. Would anyone put it past Coach Belichick to come out week 1, have a designed pass to Tebow somewhere in the first series, and then just let the rest of the league live in fear of it for the rest of the year?

  41. Patskrieg dot com says: Would anyone put it past Coach Belichick to come out week 1, have a designed pass to Tebow somewhere in the first series, and then just let the rest of the league live in fear of it for the rest of the year?

    ————————

That’s exactly the type of thing he would do

They’re not taking the ball out of Tom Brady’s hands – but Belichick has also run a fair amount of trick plays even before Tebow was on the team. There’s no reason to think he won’t do so now that he’s got Tebow.

Belihck has successfully used LBs as goal line TEs, and WRs at CB. So everyone knows that Belichick, unlike Wrecks Ryan, has the balls to actually use Tebow to open up the field for Brady

  42. Tebow will be fine. Belichick will make a good position player out of him. All I want is for Tebow to be instrumental in beating the Dolphins and the Jets.

  43. I attended Saturday’s Training Camp. I used to think that Tebow could be a QB, somewhere (not here because of Brady). But, he was terrible in his reps. He threw the ball into the ground TWICE as if his hands were too small to hold the ball!

As for tight end, there was a rookie named Zak Sudfield from Colorado, #44, who was tremendous! Look for him to get more TE time than Tebow. I realize there were no pads, so it’s a bit meaningless. But, Zak is 6’6″, 260 pounds, was alway getting open and never dropped the ball!!!

Zak for TE! It will be interesting to see where Tebow’s talents are … run-blocking TE?, can he catch the ball? can he line up as a RB? Could be!
