Braylon says Sanchez “can’t make mistakes like he has in the past”

AFC Championship: New York Jets v Indianapolis Colts Getty Images

Jets receiver Braylon Edwards says that if Mark Sanchez wants to remain the starting quarterback, he’s going to need to get better.

Edwards told reporters at training camp that Sanchez is going to have a tough time beating out Geno Smith, and that the flaws in Sanchez’s game won’t be tolerated like they were before.

It’s going to be a battle,” Edwards said. “Mark can’t make mistakes like he has in the past. Things have to be legit with Mark for him to be the starter because he has a legit guy knocking at the back door.”

Edwards also said Smith is showing that he has no intention of losing the quarterback competition.

“He’s not happy to be backing up Mark Sanchez,” Edwards said. “He’s here to start. You can tell with his leadership.”

And Smith will start if Sanchez doesn’t look better in the preseason than he did last regular season.

I hate this guy ….he talks too much can’t play …I don’t even think he will make the team…

  7. raiderlyfe510 says: Jul 27, 2013 9:12 AM

I don’t understand. The O Coordinator was Wack, WRs were weak and depleted, O Line underachieved, no running game worth mentioning, and Sanchez gets the blame.

I think everything around Sanchez has to improve before you see improvement from him. Contrary to popular belief a QB isn’t the cure-all for what ails a team. It takes a well coached, well prepared TEAM to win consistently.

A QB is just the most visible perform when a team is playing bad. Nobody sees the missed block, the wrong option route, the bad play call. They just see the incomplete pass.

  8. petedutcherjr says: Jul 27, 2013 9:15 AM

As a non-Jets fan, let me just say it doesn’t matter who is the quarterback there. The team will fail.

I wish they would cut Sanchez. Why? Because I think he can do better on a real team with a real coach.

As to Smith? Total bust in waiting.

  12. jetsoptimist says: Jul 27, 2013 9:39 AM

Give Sanchez the starting job and watch him go out there and hopefully suckseed, but if he turns the ball over like he was last yr take him out. If the Jets have a QB that doesn’t turn the ball over they can be a very gd team. Take last yr, if they didn’t have so many to’s they’re are in the playoffs. Idc if they win 7-6 every game but the QB absolutely cannot give the ball to the other team, nearly as much.

  13. jetsoptimist says: Jul 27, 2013 9:49 AM

If you thought Marks job was tough last yr with Tebow around, imagine it this yr with a rookie QB that most of the fans wanna see. Everybody knew what Tebow had or didn’t have to offer, with Geno he’s a rook so ppl wanna see how gd he can be.

  14. sketchydave says: Jul 27, 2013 9:54 AM

I should hate Sanchez but I’ve seen some decent moments. Like the guy above set, you’re given garbage reviewers garbage offensive coordinator there’s only so much he can do. He needs to study the game.

  15. pisano says: Jul 27, 2013 9:58 AM

Hopefully that bum Sanchez won’t get the chance to make anymore mistakes. I’m sure if Geno has anything at all, the Jets will have him in there as the starter. The Jets are looking to replace Sanchez with anyone that is equal, or slightly better, they have had enough of Sanchez.

  16. jeff6381 says: Jul 27, 2013 9:59 AM

Wow, truly feel sorry for Jet fans. This is the Anti-team. I have never seen such dissension from team members. You never here teammates throw one another under the bus in Denver, San Francisco, Atlanta, New England.

Rex, I know this sounds like a skipping record, but get ahold of your damn team and keep their mouths shut! Focus on football!

  29. dcapettini says: Jul 27, 2013 10:33 AM

Gaylon Edwards would have to sneak a back door comment in there….

  32. vgferenzi says: Jul 27, 2013 10:40 AM

Edwards is a joke. He was the third overall pick and over his 10 year career he has averaged 36 rec 550 yds and 4 TDs per year. If that weren’t bad enough his only good season was when he went to the pro bowl SEVEN years ago. Omit that season as an outlier and his career is 31 rec 470 yds and 2.6 TDs per year. He has only caught one TD in the past two seasons. He has only caught 52% of passes thrown to him and has consistently been a league leader in dropped passes. He is the epitome of a bust that has somehow stuck around…and he has been a headache everywhere he has gone. Being arrested for excessive speeding seven times, DUI, assault…I’m not a Jets fan, nor a Sanchez fan, but who is Edwards to call ANYONE out???

-Receiver talented enough to be Pro-Bowler who drops more catches than anyone in football.

I think Edwards should be moved to CB, maybe he could replace Revis!!!!!

Your theory that inserting a QB won’t fix everything is just dead wrong. Colts 2 years ago were 2-14 (or somewhere in that neighborhood), add in Luck and back in the playoffs/contender.

Also see Rams/Kurt Warner, Steelers/Big Ben, and back to the Colts with Manning (granted Manning’s 1st year was terrible, but year 2 they went 13-3).

Sanchez is a USC QB and they traditionally do not do well in the NFL. Realistically the only somewhat succesful USC QB that I can think of is Palmer. And no starting NFL QB that went to USC has won a Superbowl (key word there is STARTER).

My name/tag says it all for you….

Yes this is the Jet’s way. Anyone can say anything they want about whoever they want.

Works real good when you are winning.

But when they are losing, that mentality ends up with the team eating their own.

Hence the Circus, and it starts right at the top, and it’s not going to get any better this year. IMO

I watched a lot of those shootouts and the Texas Tech game. Typical Big East Big 12 games. It’s funny when you look at the scores there were no name QB’s almost every week that either put up more points or almost as many points…….

  47. 13fitzj says: Jul 27, 2013 11:22 AM

    *sigh*

You guys can say what you want about the whole Jets’ team (although most of what you say is irrational and unfounded in anything other than sensationalist media coverage) but I wish people would realize that Braylon dropped (pun intended) his stonehanded tendencies after he left Cleveland. He had one bad drop on a Thursday Night game vs Buffalo but he had 4 in his whole last season with the Jets in the top 15 best drop percentages in the league that year.

Please have a clue before you bad mouth someone.

For Edwards defenders, its always good to have someone signed just prior to camp starting, then badmouth the presumptive starter. At least the one who has taken > zero NFL snaps.
If Edwards had an ounce of sense, he could have easily praised Smith without dumping on Sanchez. Controversy and distractions make for a winning team, right? Coach answering questions regarding player on player comments makes for a winning team, right? If that’s the case, the Jets should have three SB trophies in the Ryan era…

    ———————————————–/

I’m a student of the game I know it’s history like the back of my hand.

Colts – Polian’s son is on the coaching staff that coached Andrew Luck in college. Polian wanted to draft Luck for years. He tanked the Colts 2011 season to draft luck by putting QBs under center who weren’t capable of winning games. The 2012 Colts were already a good team that just lacked a viable QB. Luck is a awesome QB, but they’re a 8-8, 10-6 team with just a viable QB.

1999 Rams – Dick Vermiel was in the 3rd year of his building process. That team was ready to roll. Torry Holt, Bruce, Hakim, Faulk, Orlando Pace, Aeneas Williams… It was way more to that offense’s success than a QB who just handed in his Grocey Store uniform.

Steelers – Cowher has won with Maddox, Kordell Stewart, and Neil ODonnel at QB…and won BIG. Big Ben just got him the ring. His teams always contended for championships. At least more often than not.

BAD COACHES…BAD TEAMS NEED HALL OF FAME QBS TO WIN AND SAVE THEIR FRANCHISE.

The good coaches DEVELOP GOOD QBs through creating a good football environment that’s conducive to player development. Thats why Andy Reid and Holmgren can draft QBs in the middle rounds and
eventually trade them for 1st and 2nd round Picks. Its their TEAMS that make their QBs look good.

I agree that Braylon can support Geno without ripping Sanchez. Having said that I am so tired of blaming the lack of WR’s & coaching… The fact still remains (according to several NFL defensive players) Sanchez has the lowest football IQ in the league…. Talking football wise the saying is “you can’t fix stupid” I believe you could surround this guy with Jerry Rice’s and he would still fail..

    1. Sanchez made a lot of mistakes in the past.
    2. He needs to improve.
    3. Smith is just two days into his preseason and from what i hear, he is doing everything Sanchez is doing in training.

If you want to attack the messenger, go ahead but do not attack the message.

What is Edwards talking for. What an idiot. He just got there didn’t he? They should cut him again. That kind of idiotic talk can’t help a team. The Jets have no media control at all. Patriots two rules are “Do your job” and “put the team first”. The Jets never do that. A losing formula from the top down.
