The Chargers waived-injured inside linebacker Jonas Mouton on Saturday, but he’ll revert to injured reserve if he clears waivers, the club said.
Mouton, 25, suffered a torn ACL on Thursday. The third-year pro from Michigan was likely to compete for a reserve spot with San Diego.
Waiving a player with an injury designation is not uncommon. In most cases, the player is unclaimed and lands on injured reserve. One notable recent example was tight end Jake Ballard, whom the Patriots claimed from the Giants last year.
The Chargers’ placement of Mouton on waivers was disclosed in the NFL’s Saturday transactions.
