Defense brings higher intensity to Packers practice

Gillett AP

Last year ended for the Packers with defensive players turning on each other.  This year is beginning for the Packers with offensive and defensive players turning on each other.

As explaining by Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the first day of padded practice included extensive “shoves, taunts and curse words” as the defense tried to establish more of an edge.

“That’s always the goal for the defense to be more aggressive,” linebacker Dezman Moses said, via Silverstein.  “There’s been a lot of talk about us being soft and this, that and whatever.

“We don’t believe that.  That’s never been a question by anyone in this locker room.  We’re just trying to up the physicality a little bit.  Just make it a way that our defense works and plays.”

The Packers defense carries the scar of giving up 579 yards to the 49ers in the divisional round, as a close game turned into a route.

“The nasty is here and I love it,” defensive end Mike Daniels said.  “Everybody is getting involved.  The best part is, we all understand each other.  What happens on the field, stays on the field.  It’s kind of like Vegas.  When we get back on the field we’re all friends.”

Still, there can be too much “nasty” for the coaching staff’s comfort.

“It was great to get that competitive environment established,” coach Mike McCarthy said.  “I thought they definitely practiced with an edge.  We had too much extracurricular activities going on.  That falls under your category of player safety.”

Player safety is a valid concern.  But Packers defenders and their coaches should be even more worried about job security.  Based on the first day of practice, they apparently are.

The only intensity the Packer’s defense has is letting Adrian Peterson run over them every game.

  2. tokyosandblaster says: Jul 29, 2013 7:51 PM

The defense improved from last to 11th last year. Should improve to a top 5 squad this year and finish with ring #5.

Ah. I’m sorry, I thought you little vikes fans realized that your defense wasn’t as good as the Packers last year, and that your best players are all on the wrong side of 30, while the Packers best guys are all around the ages of 25 – 28, with plenty of speed and room to grow.

    My bad.

  9. packhawk04 says: Jul 29, 2013 8:06 PM

Keep mocking the 11th overall defense. All it does is make you look stupid.

  10. tokyosandblaster says: Jul 29, 2013 8:09 PM

I listened to an interview with Santana Dotson a few weeks ago. He talked about how players were nasty at mini camp before they won the Super Bowl. They also focused on forcing/recovering fumbles that year.

This year the Packers are focusing on forcing /recovering fumbles, and are bringing the nasty.

What did the Vikes focus on before their Super Bowl winning year?

    Take your time.

If the D improves at all the season will be very interesting, but regardless the Packers own the North and will continue for a few more years at least

LOL…these Viking fans are even more fun to rag on than Bear fans. They’re such suckers for punishment.

If you want to make a Viking fan freak out, just mention:

    A. The Packers’ numerous world championships and Super Bowls victories, vs. a huge goose egg for Minnesota.

    B. The Vikings’ habit of constantly signing old, has-been, Packer castoffs.

    C. The Love Boat.

    D. 1998. Remember to also point out that were it not for that well-timed missed FG, they would now have 5 Super Bowl defeats instead of 4.

Gawd, it must suck to be a fan of the Purple Pukes!

  16. gbpshareholder says: Jul 29, 2013 8:17 PM

It is good to see this young defense starting out this aggressive and competing this hard. As long the D comes with half the attitude and execution the O has, this years Packer team will be a force.

As for all the Viking fans talking up how AP will eat up the Packers… one word… Scoreboard!!!

  17. wheezerswin says: Jul 29, 2013 8:19 PM

And then there will be the flood of useless AP stats in 3…2…1… That’s all Viking fan has. That and a dusty, empty trophy case.

Vikings 20 (5th in the NFL)
Bears: 29 (1st in the NFL)
Packers: 8 (32nd in the NFL)

@Tokyosandblaster they really need to focus on their forced fumbles LOL…

All Day owns GB’s front 7 and back 4…..ALL DANG DAY. Here’s the deal….packers have a soft defense and they don’t like to see #28 coming at them. They did ok in the playoff game, but we played with Joe Webb.
At the end of the day, we got 2 big corners that will give Lordy Jordy problems and James Jones….I don’t think he is that good. I know he led the NFL in TD’s but I think that is due to the other packers recievers. Cobb is a good player.
We are bringing back the same O-Line and if you don’t think the Minnesota Moving Company isn’t chomping at the bit to crush GB’s soft 3-4 defense. Your rookie is going to get acclimated to the MN Vikings very quickly.
One thing people won’t know, but will soon, is this Patterson Kid…..dude is all of 6’3 225 and runs a 4.4 FORTY…….enough said.

Interesting how the team “leaders” – Dez Moses and Mike Daniels are making these “bold” comments…

Dez is Clay Mathews backup and Mike is the projected backup to the projected backup of Ryan Pickett.

Nice to have leadership – even if these guys only have a grand total of 39 career tackles/assists between them.

The projected average age of the Vikings starters (14th) and the projected average age of the Packers starters (16th) is virtually the same – per the most recent rankings at espn.com.

  42. molonlabe44 says: Jul 29, 2013 10:10 PM

Thankfully it looks like a handful of Packer and Viking fans are just idiots, but for the most part both teams can acknowledge the facts. Vikings fans need to admit the Packers have kicked Viking butt for the last few years and have a far better history as a team. Packer fans need to admit that AD and the Vikings O-Line owned you last year. Finally the only teams in the NFL that can say they kept Adrian Peterson in check were the teams who didn’t face him. Every honest NFL fan knows that Peterson’s performance last year was amazing. No passing game at all, everyone knew he was getting the ball and no one could stop him

  43. sterlingrodgers says: Jul 29, 2013 10:36 PM

Peterson is going to rush for 1400-1500 yards* this year and the Vikings will finish 5-11 or 6-10. This is not rocket science.

    * not bad for a 28-year old back whose career hit its apogee last year and will soon be in rapid descent.

  44. opietaylor says: Jul 29, 2013 10:39 PM

As a Bears fan of over 40 years, I’ve pretty much seen it all in the NFL. One thing for sure is that smart GMs pay for potential, and not necessarily for past performance; ie Urlacher. That being said, both GB and Minn probably gets passed up by the Bears in 2013. AP goes down; last place. A-Rod goes down; last or 3rd place. Bears are most balanced team in 2013. 2012 means nothing; neither do “all” GB’s past “championships”. This is not the past, otherwise the Bears are the best because they have more franchise victories than every other team.

So sad when a team is so bad and the fans are so blind that individual statistics are used as trash talk LOL. Awful, awful team you have in Minnesota. Losers, lifelong losers that wear purple. Same thing I wondered about with Packer fans trashing on Viking stories. Don’t play innocent when you know what’s true.

BTW for what it’s worth siuleno, you can laugh about Childress being fired after that packer game, we still laugh harder about your hero defecting to purple because he WANTED to….. Watching that was almost like as if Walter Payton WANTED to play for the Packers. Too bad that was fantasy but Brett did wear purple and that was a fact……………

We can always go back and forth over little barbs, but know that an article pimping up the packer defense is like a Viking story pimping up their passing game.

Laughable until proven in the regular season.
