King Dunlap gets bulk of Chargers’ first-team OLT reps early

When the Chargers signed Max Starks in May, the instinct was to pencil him in as the starting left tackle.

In time, Starks could be San Diego’s starter on the left side. However, in the opening stages of training camp, King Dunlap has taken the majority of the first-team snaps protecting Philip Rivers’ blind side, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Monday.

However, Starks did get work at left tackle with the first-team offense on Monday when Dunlap exited with an injury, the Union-Tribune reported. (Dunlap’s injury isn’t known, but it’s believed to be minor, Gehlken reported.)

Chargers head coach Mike McCoy indicated Monday that the club will try various line combinations during the summer.

“We’re trying to find the best five guys together,” McCoy said, per the Union-Tribune. “We’re going to continue rolling the line throughout camp, even in the preseason we’ll mix them with changes here and there.”

Dunlap started 12 games at tackle for the Eagles a season ago, the majority on the left side. Given the Chargers’ tackle issues in 2012, a competition where Dunlap and Starks play well would be a positive development for San Diego, which has had to call on its depth at this position in recent years.

  1. As an eagles fan that watched this turd slowly creep around the bowl,,, I can only say
    BAAAAHHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHSHSHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHSHAHAHAHAHA..

rivers is toast if this guy starts anywhere on that OL… LT??? That coach must hate Phillip Rivers.

  2. Lifelong charger fan.

This is a passing league, and we cannot protect the passer, rush the quarterback, or defend against the pass. We were 4-0 against the Chiefs and Raiders last year and 3-9 against the rest of the NFL.

That being said I think McCoy was a good hire, be patient might be a long year.

  3. You can try a million different line combinations. Any combination that includes Dunlap is the wrong one.

  4. King Dunlap at LT, what could go wrong?

Phyllis is gonna be some kind of pissed with the besting he’s going to take. 🙂

  5. Can we leave a receiver off the field and have a 2nd Left Tackle? 6 O-Linemen might be able to keep Rivers upright.

    (Sarcasm… Sort of…)

Wait, who’s your quarterback this year?

  7. What’s funny is…he’s miles better than what we lined up with last year. And we still won 7 games and probably should have won 10. The o-line was quite awful last year and looks 10x better this year.

He will be easy to spot. He won’t be shot-putting while laying on his back. He will be the guy that won’t be screaming at King Dunlap for getting him murdered.
