Loser of Vick-Foles competition could be gone from Philly

Eagles AP

The loser of the Mike Vick-Nick Foles quarterback competition might not simply be destined for the bench.  He might be headed on the first bus out of town.

That’s why Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com believes.  He shared his views during Monday’s edition of PFT Live.

We’ve long believed that if Vick doesn’t emerge as the starter, he could disappear from the roster.  But Foles could be out of a job, Mosher believes, if Vick wins the first-string position.

Under either scenario, rookie Matt Barkley would become the backup, with former Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon serving as the scout-team/change-of-pace read-option option.

If Barkley wins the job (which Mosher thinks isn’t out of the question), Foles likely would remain in place, as the backup.  Vick would be gone.

What it all means for now is that, once the drama of the quarterback competition ends, even more drama could follow.

My day would not be complete without yet another article on the Philly QB situation.

Don’t worry Vick, latest reports show unemployment pays $1,850.00 per month…..and you can thank Obama for extending that to 73 weeks…..

  4. eatitfanboy says: Jul 29, 2013 3:21 PM

I don’t understand why Vick is there. Even if he his the best QB there right now, what is Kelly trying to do with this team? Isn’t his goal to build the strongest foundation possible for the future?

How could starting a guy who unquestionably is on the downside of his career help accomplish that goal even if he is, for the moment, the most NFL ready option?

Does anyone consider Michael Vick to a “building block” for a perennial contender?

  5. tombradyswig says: Jul 29, 2013 3:22 PM

    Go Foles!! Or Bark!

  6. hanifmiller says: Jul 29, 2013 3:22 PM

I don’t understand why the Eagles would let either go if a trade was not involved. I could envision a scenario where the Eagles could get a 4-7th round pick for either. But to release either one outright makes no sense. Better to keep them on the roster and see if there is interest next year.

  7. thestrategyexpert says: Jul 29, 2013 3:23 PM

So trade one of them like yesterday instead of continuing to waste the other. It’s not like both of these guys are highly valuable, none of them have emerged as starter worthy. Move ‘em out and get 2 more valuable QBs than them if you can. You don’t have to settle for 1.

Unless the Coach wants to make a re-determination that one of these guys is a winner and a keeper. Plus what are you going to do with Barkley? Wait a couple years and then find a way to halfway maybe use him or maybe not at that time?

  8. determineflksmakeit says: Jul 29, 2013 3:24 PM

And if they keep all the quarterbacks can you in the future quit trying to constantly predict the outcome of things and instead just report the news…

  9. djax10isthebomb says: Jul 29, 2013 3:24 PM

Is there going to be one of these Fole vs Vick articles posted here everyday until there’s a starter named? This is getting kind of ridiculous. Let it play out for a few weeks.

  10. justintuckrule says: Jul 29, 2013 3:26 PM

Since neither is the QB of the future, the Eagles should keep Vick and let Barkley be his caddy for a year or two to learn. Trade Foles to replace Maclin.

Who cares this is a last place team in the NFC Beast Division.

    1. Cowboys

    4. Eagles

As a BIG TIME USC fan I can only say this…. The QB can’t misses Matt Leinart, Mark Sanchez… nuff said???

  13. eagles83 says: Jul 29, 2013 3:38 PM

The sooner Vick is off the Eagles, the better it is for the team.

  14. eaglesw00t says: Jul 29, 2013 3:44 PM

    Bull

If he starts Vick, no chance a second year QB with the second best statistical rookie season in the SB era just gets cut. You keep all 3, and its a no brainer.

The Eagles have well under 20 mill under the cap. Not exactly a reason to worry about wasting a few bucks. And Dixon has no reason to be in the league whatsoever…

  15. bradybbgoat says: Jul 29, 2013 3:44 PM

I understand the idea that Vick will likely be gone, but to suggest the Eagles will give up on a 2nd year guy simply because he was beaten out by an established vet is beyond foolish.

Filed will be in Philly at least until his rookie deal is up.

    October 14th, 2013 – BREAKING:

Eagles bring back Michael Vick for a 1 year deal to finish off a terrible season.

Who said Foles isnt the QB of the future? He is better than Vick, and only 23. He was better statistically than Peyton Manning or Dan Marino in his rookie season. Did you write Peyton off as a rookie?

Given your reasoning, Ill bet you did.

  18. djax10isthebomb says: Jul 29, 2013 3:46 PM

aamboca. You might be a huge Trojans fan, and that’s great and all.. but using that tired, old and lazy example shows your lack of football smarts. I guess every MLB that comes out of Ole Miss is a can’t miss prospect that will go on to be a multiple pro bowler/all pro too, right? DERP!!!

  19. bradybbgoat says: Jul 29, 2013 3:47 PM

    Foles* (stupid phone)

  20. coltzfan166 says: Jul 29, 2013 3:50 PM

So last March they wouldn’t trade Foles unless it was for a first rounder. And now they could cut him when he has basically no salary?

What if one gets hurt in Week One?

  21. nebster21 says: Jul 29, 2013 4:02 PM

  22. granadafan says: Jul 29, 2013 4:09 PM

If Vick wins, Foles would be smart to stick around because Vick will be on the IR by Week 3 at the latest.

Not sure where you got your BS but its not true at all. Marino’s rookie campaign DWARFED anything Foles will probably ever put up. He had 20Td’s in 11 games (9 starts) and 6ints. Foles had 6 and 5 respectively. Rating was 96 Marino 79 Foles. Lets not go crazy here.

Did the Colts or Dolphins trade up in Rd. 4 to draft another QB when they had glaring holes all over? The fact that the Eagles, who also has holes all over, did tells me they lack confidence in Foles. That…and anyone who has watched football for more than 1 season can tell Foles blows. Your handy little stat doesn’t change my opinion.

  25. micknangold says: Jul 29, 2013 4:42 PM

Nick Foles had a pedestrian rookie year. Not good, not awful. Why anyone would compare him to Manning or Marino is beyond me.

  26. nickynick04 says: Jul 29, 2013 4:49 PM

Foles will be in Green Bay 4 hours after he is cut.
    Its a done deal.

  27. justintuckrule says: Jul 29, 2013 4:53 PM

@Eagleswoot – Know who had the 7th best rookie stats. This QB started every game, and set rookie records in completions (274), attempts (486), and yards (2,833). He also carried the ball 68 times for 344 yards and 3 TDs. This QB was Rick Mirer. Still want to rest on that little stat of yours?

  28. dku5 says: Jul 29, 2013 5:56 PM

I didn’t follow this argument. Why would the Eagles cut either player? The fact that Kelly has not made a decison shows that neither has out performed the other (including Barkley). Regardless of how good/bad they look, if Kelly is not convinced which Player is the better by now, he will probably not want to just throw out the other guy when he does decide. What a stupid article/philosophy.

  29. pavelfitzgerald says: Jul 29, 2013 6:08 PM

That’s what he believes, not why he believes (in reference to the quote at the top of the article).

Karma & irony all in one. This of course is in reference to you critiquing Hopkins grammar a mere couple stories before

  30. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Jul 29, 2013 6:09 PM

If Vick loses to Foles, he will not want to be in Philly or maybe even in football any more for that matter. If Foles loses, I think he will want to go to a team with an offense that better suits his skill set.

  31. ocgunslinger says: Jul 29, 2013 7:06 PM

Vick IS on the downhill side of his career and his style indicates he won’t play 16 games. He should be traded for whatever the market will bear and play Foles with Barkley (QB of the future) as backup. Youth over age anytime unless you are discussing guys like Manning, Brady, Brees etc.

  32. realfootballfan says: Jul 29, 2013 7:14 PM

Alot of Foles fanboys in here drinking the Kool-Aid. How many games did he win last year? Oh, that’s right, one.

If they thought so highly of him, why did they keep Vick? I know as a new coach, that would have been the perfect time to cut and run on a contract that was specifically set up to cut and run exactly when they instead went in and redid his contract.

But keep telling yourself that anyone outside of Philly wants Nick Foles as anything but the backup that he is.

Unless Vick stinks it up (still very possible) allowing the Philly brass to save a little money with a Vick cut because the difference between stinking with Vick or Foles would be financial at that point, Foles is gone because he’s a statue that’s not that good except in the delusional minds of those kinds of fans who always think, that guy was lighting it up in the preseason would be tearing the league up if he ever got a shot. The coaches are holding him back.” You know, like Colt Brennan fans once upon a time when he was a Redskin, lol.

  33. fatpappy says: Jul 29, 2013 10:21 PM

I’m a life long Eagles fan. Seriously, you Vick supporters are clueless. What has he done in this league?! Look up his stats, as I don’t have time to school you. Wins & losses…not great. Turnovers….way too many. Playoff wins in 10 years…Two. Sorry, his resume says average on his best day. But sure, keep supporting because he runs fast. What a joke. Can’t wait for the day he is no longer an Eagle.

  34. fatpappy says: Jul 29, 2013 11:36 PM

Ha! Just saw Matt Millen on NFL Network saying that Vick would be his choice and that he has a lot of upside. No wonder the Lions went 0-16 with that guy as GM! Just convinces me further that Vick needs to go.

  35. nutsacker says: Jul 29, 2013 11:59 PM

Considering they both blow, can we trade the pair of them to the Jags for a box of cadaver ACL’s?

  36. nutsacker says: Jul 30, 2013 10:08 AM

You’re killing me with Foles’ great “stats”. Was it is ONE victory on 7 tries or was it the 6 TD’s with 11 turnovers. Foles is garbage. Some people hate Vick because of his play. Some hate him because of their dog or something, and some people just don’t like him because he is black. None of these are valid reasons to think Foles is a good quarterback. One has nothing to do with the other. Real Philly fans can see through that and come to the conclusion that we need a QB that isn’t currently on our roster.

  37. heeltouchdown says: Jul 30, 2013 10:23 AM

I personally think you could get more for Foles than Vick in a trade. QB is not the only problem the Eagles have to fix. Even if both were gone from the team, would they even be better off this season? I think the Eagles really need to look down the road. Let Vick play this season, and Barkley be his backup and learn the ropes from a one time great. As many fellow commentators have posted, the Eagles could get a replacement for Maclin with Foles. Vick, I don’t think so as he really has at best another year or two beyond this one in his NFL career.
