Report: Geno Smith looks out of shape at Jets camp

Geno Smith AP

In the race to become the Jets’ starting quarterback, Geno Smith is lagging behind Mark Sanchez in at least one respect: Physical conditioning.

That’s the word from Brian Baldinger of NFL Network, who was at Jets camp on Sunday and said Smith looked out of shape during wind sprints following practice. According to Baldinger, Smith couldn’t keep up with Sanchez or anyone else in the group of players doing conditioning drills together.

“He looked good yesterday until they ran gassers at the end of practice, and Geno Smith looked like he had done no conditioning,” Baldinger said of Smith. “It was actually embarrassing to see how far behind he was behind Sanchez, [Matt] Simms and everybody else that’s there.”

Smith is a faster runner than Sanchez (Smith ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.6-second range at the Scouting Combine, while Sanchez was in the 4.9-second range), so if Sanchez is beating Smith in wind sprints, that suggests that Sanchez has taken his conditioning much more seriously this offseason. That would seem to be a point in Sanchez’s favor as Rex Ryan, John Idzik and others make the “group effort” to pick the starter.

But much more important than wind sprints is the ability to run the offense, and Baldinger said in that respect, Smith looked good on the practice field.

“He did look good getting in and out of the huddle, getting to the line of scrimmage, getting the ball out of his hands quickly,” Baldinger said.

That’s what really matters to playing quarterback. But it would be nice to see Smith get himself into shape.

Pretty much every story the media runs about Geno Smith is that he’s lazy, overrated, terrible, immature, a bad person, etc.

So I guess that means he’s going to be like the lovechild of Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson.

I wonder how well Elway, Montana, Marino, Farve, etc. did running wind sprints at the end of training camp practices their rookie year?

Total non story but since it’s the Jets it has to be reported. I am much more interested how quarterbacks perform when it comes to throwing the ball during practice, can we get a story about that.

Question will be, how does he look running the offense in the fourth quarter. Lots of people look good the first 20 minutes.

But these camp reports don’t mean much compared to what we see on the field in games. Maybe he will shine. But if not …..

I doubt Geno will play good enough to have his team retire his number. The only way I can see that happening is if the Jets retire the number so they’re never reminded of just how horrible he is, effectively deleting him from team annals.

Wow…finding any reason to knock the kid down. I guess Matt Simms can work himself into the starting line up due to his wind sprints.

Perhaps the other vets have been thru a few professional seasons and their experience proves it.

Sanchez has always looked like a Franchise QB, problem is that he don’t play like one during the season.

Did you expect anything different? This team is a joke, Rex is a joke like his father was. This is a team that gave the head coach a second chance after trading up to get Sanchez, and hiring Tony Sparano as offensive coordinator after playing the dolphins 2 times a year and seeing how excited that idiot got over field goals. Then they trade for Tebow & don’t even give him a chance when they bench Sanchez, & Tebow was the #2 QB. As a Giants fan, it’s nice to see the team that shares the stadium watch the playoffs from home

Man. I almost (but not really) feel for you Yets fans.
They bring on this joker, and still (STILL!!!!) have Sanchez playing for a role as the starting QB.

I know 2013 wasn’t exactly a great year for drafting QB’s, but there were still a million options which would have been more worthwhile than bringing in Smith, and especially keeping Sanchez. I mean, besides being a horrible pro QB, the guy came from USC. That’s all anyone needs to know, to realize that he’s destined to be a bust in the pros.

  32. nfloracle says: Jul 29, 2013 8:14 PM

“getting the ball out of his hands quickly,” Baldinger said… That’s what really matters to playing quarterback.

WRONG! What really matters is getting the ball into the hands of a running back or receiver who will then take it at least five yards closer to the endzone.

Amazing that most if not all of the anti-Jets NY media has been saying Smith has been well ahead of Sanchez the last two practices and overall ahead through four.

Yet here comes Pats-loving MDS managing to find a negative article. Big surprise. Like Brian Baldinger can write anyway. Keep that agenda rolling guys…

  40. solidarityrules says: Jul 29, 2013 8:29 PM

Geno Smith is not the Jets quarterback of the future. The Jets took two other players first; this conditioning issue fits with other indicators about willingness to do the hard behind the scenes work needed to be a good quarterback in the NFL.

  41. jetsclaps says: Jul 29, 2013 8:29 PM

This is comical now. Geno Smith has been looking good through the first 4 practices and then some reporter notices he’s not running a wind sprint or something and the story is Geno Smith is out of shape.

This is why people hate the media.

Don’t you think Rex Ryan has something to do with that? All the predictions of winning a superbowl that went unfulfilled and the numerous statements that defied the obvious on the field…and of course, the Tebow debacle last year…….Don’t you think that has something to do with the media being all over the Jets? It is the gift that keeps on giving.

Take a lesson from the Giants head coach. Keep your mouth buttoned up and when you do speak….keep it short, simple and stick to the company line. The media will start to leave you alone if you do.

If the report says Geno looked good in practice throwing the football, then obviously as a pocket passer his conditioning is good enough to do his job.

The report didn’t say Sanchez looked good at anything but running, so I don’t see why the focus is on the negatives (that don’t matter).

Pettine will make buffalo defense good. But to take away from Rex is comically. Speaking as someone who has seen him coach. He knows defense, players all love him, and he was always working.

His issue has been getting an offense. Like most defensive coaches. Plus Sanchez failed as well. Once they gave him more responsibility Rex looked bad. Can’t help when a guy doesn’t take his job seriously.

Pettine will succeed and Rex will groom a other defensive coach.

First of all, Reports out of the Jets practice today are that he had another solid day. His teammates including Edwards and Cromartie were saying the kid looks good so far. I am not saying Edwards and Cromartie are the sharpest tacks in the box but his teammates have been commending his ability to throw the football and lead the huddle. This guy Baldinger can’t be serious saying because he finished last in windsprints AT THE END OF PRACTICE that he is out of shape. He led the first team offense all practice, he is learning to take snaps under center and read a Rex Ryan coached defense pre snap. All of those things are going to exhaust the kid. I know plenty of people that are in great shape that sometimes finish last in sprints, sometimes you are just physically exhausted, maybe a little beat up. Its a 3 hour full contact practice. Matt Simms beat him in the sprint? Cmon now, the kid doesn’t touch the field, windsprints are probably the only chance he has to exert energy on the field all practice.

Predraft process, everyone was hating on this kid, saying he has no work ethic, he is lazy, he is streaky. Say whatever you want the kid only threw 7 picks in the Big12 all year. I am not saying the kid is the next RG3 or Russel Wilson. But at the end of the day the kid slid to the second round and he was the arguably the best quarterback in college football. He cannot be labeled as a bust, I can’t remember the last time people were calling a second round pick a bust to be honest. The Jets drafted Ducasse 3 years ago in the second round and the guy looks like he’s going to be on the practice squad this year. I bet you a lot of guys can’t name their team’s last 5 second round picks. It was a solid value pick by the Jets. Lets give a chance for this whole thing to play out, for christ sakes, the headline today on espn was that sanchez threw an interception. Its training camp, I wouldn’t care if Rodgers or Brady threw 4 picks in their second full pad practice of training camp.

  79. j0esixpack says: Jul 29, 2013 10:43 PM

Give Geno some credit – he knows it’s in his best interest to be a backup this year and it looks like he’s working hard to get there.

Wrecks Ryan’s only hope to save his job is to start the new GM’s new QB and see how he does.

Of course, as Sanchez proved, throwing a rookie to the wolves can permanently stunt one’s growth. If Geno is smart he knows this too.

When the Jets lose with Sanchez – and you know they will – both Sanchez and Wrecks Ryan will lose their jobs and Smith will be the frontrunner for 2014 with an ACTUAL head coach at the helm no less.

He just has to ensure he DOESN’T win the starting job. So far, so good.

  80. jprcox says: Jul 29, 2013 10:51 PM

I highly doubt G.Smith has been slacking. We really have no idea whats up – he could have pulled a hamstring or something.

… Well I wouldn’t want him on my team then. Please. give me the tire flipper.

  90. ishudbgm says: Jul 30, 2013 12:20 AM

As much as I respect Baldinger I have to laugh at this….they are called “GASSERS” for a reason. Sanchez’s problems do not start with his physical conditioning it starts with him wanting to be Justin Beibers older brother…I say that to say this, Geno does not need to be in the same condition as a rb or Sanchez for that matter. As long as Geno makes the right reads and progresses well he WILL BE STARTING some point through out this season!!! Funny how NFL network has one reporter saying “Smith looks out of shape” while the other one says “Smith looks great and hasn’t thrown 1 pic in camp, Sanchez is in trouble”. NFL QBs do not run gassers half the time anyway…tell Peyton, Eli, or Brady they need to be out of breath before practice is over and I wonder what reaction you get. Sanchez is a nobody he better be in the best shape in the NFL if he wants another season!!!

  91. justlntuckrule says: Jul 30, 2013 1:08 AM

QBs like Rivers or Palmer Kurt Warner not excatly speedsters …main thing is can geno read coverages and can he lead …gassers look good in shorts but we all know that doesnt win games

This is pretty discouraging. The lack of conditioning is more of a sign of lack of maturity and commitment to professionalism – especially for a rookie.

    Not good Geno.

I love the fact we just look past anything positive for the Jets and go straight for the negative…..we got to make sure we keep whipping boy down
    ————————————————————-

There is nothing positive for the Jets, that’s the point. Worst QB situation in the league, worst RB situation in the league and probably the worst coach in the league. All they need is Jerry Jones as their GM and they’d really be a mess.

I thought you were going take Sanchez job? It doesn’t matter who at qb cause jets are going finish last and get clowney.

Two things to consider. If he isn’t in good shape, he doesn’t take this opportunity seriously. Also, as someone said earlier, your fitness either helps or hurts you late in the game. Lastly, we all know Brady is slow, but I’m pretty sure he is in good shape.

You can say they’re the most hated team, but also the most covered and talked about team in the NFL. I still don’t understand the media and fans obsession with Jets content. I guess people can’t get enough, or it wouldn’t get posted.

Geno Smith is a diva …. He made a circus about firing his agent and now has made everyone know he attended a Jay Z concert …. Cut this bum already he is cancer to the locker room…

In his defense he’s got two broken legs from an off season car accident.

  110. sfm073 says: Jul 30, 2013 10:21 AM

Maybe he focused on learning to be a better qb, than being better at wind sprints. Being in good shape sure has made Tim tebow a great qb.

Geno Smith & JAY Z are kicking it on the couch drinking Colt 45 and smoking a big joint … That’s why Geno Smith is a lazy bum …… #1 JETS fan

Yet here comes Pats-loving MDS managing to find a negative article. Big surprise. Like Brian Baldinger can write anyway. Keep that agenda rolling guys…
    ________________________________
I’m a Pats fan so I have no reason to make unrealistically positive comments on the NYJ.

Baldinger is never agenda driven that I’ve seen and is one of the few analysts who refuses to parrot all the same stuff other analysts do because they are lazy. If he said it, he saw it.

Baldinger is NOT the one who emphasized Smith having difficulty with the sprints. It was a comment along with the one about Smith doing well with verbiage, etc.

A QB can easily become better conditioned but it’s not so easy to get all that verbiage down. If I were NYJ fan I’d be ok with his not running sprints well right now, but doing well running and knowing the offense. Heath Evans who I also like for telling it as it is had Smith spit out a play of his choosing the other day and Smith was impressive. I’ve seen a lot of young QBs struggle with even repeating a WCO play smoothly. I think it was also Evans who mentioned that Smith appeared to be making good reads when they were running the offense.

I like Geno so I hate reading unfair criticism of him. The only thing I think could be an issue with him is he seems to be an introvert andsometimes has some issues handling the press (this is a young player problem sometimes, not an intrinsic problem) and those can be stumbling blocks to being a leader at QB. Note, I don’t say WILL BE, I say “can be”. If he is sharp with his knowledge and shows he can do it on the field, none of that will matter. It looks like he’s off to a good start there.

This is the story on Geno Smith! Geno Smith is criticized for not going to Sanchez side show Jets West and he shows up to camp and impresses all of his coaches and teammates with how quickly he is picking up the offense and he is performing better than Sanchez after Sanchez spent all that time with the Jets WR in california? The story here is Sanchez is losing the QB competition big time. No Ints in TC so far and he is much better than Sanchez in the Redzone! Sanchez is the one that wasted his time on conditioning because he will be the one holding the clipboard this upcoming season!! Media are a bunch of morons! Oh btw Smith was run read option plays as well I am sure that the Jets did not waste their time practicing those plays with Sanchez.

  115. prijak1 says: Jul 30, 2013 1:09 PM

Geno Smith is a diva , nobody cares about him not showing up to Jets West . Mark Sanchez is laughing that Geno Smith is getting a $4 million contract for 4 years and Mark has a guaranteed $9Million for the season. Looks like JayZ didn’t do a good job for the Diva …. Jay Z was too busy with Beyounce and the Nets …. Geno will take a back seat to Sanchez and JayZ .

They’re QB’s. Why do we care how “fast” they are. The last time I checked, it’s the QB’s job to complete the pass, requiring some good foot work at times and a great arm (not so much speed.) You want a running, QB? Should have kept Tebow.
