Texans sign Joe Mays

Joe Mays AP

Joe Mays is a Houston Texan.

The Texans signed Mays this afternoon after he worked out for the team this morning, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Mays was cut last week by the Broncos, who didn’t want to pay his $4 million base salary. His most infamous play in Denver came against Texans quarterback Matt Schaub, who lost a chunk of his ear on a brutal shot from Mays that resulted in the NFL suspending Mays for the next week’s game.

Several teams showed interest in Mays, and he visited Washington before deciding against signing. In Houston Mays will provide depth at inside linebacker behind starters Brian Cushing and Darryl Sharpton, both of whom have injury concerns.

He is a hell of a special teamer, but not a very good MLB.

Smart move, not signing in Washington.

They haven’t won a playoff game there in 2 decades.

    Schaub,

Hello? Can you hear me now? Matt, I said I’m coming to Houston.

    -Joe

He brings the missing piece of Schaubs ear with him

  5. jrebar88 says: Jul 29, 2013 3:33 PM

BTW that was still a clean hit. NFL is weak.

Matt Schaub, Evander Holyfield and Vincent Van Gogh walk into a bar…..

  7. grindhousegazette says: Jul 29, 2013 3:42 PM

Well that might a little awkward.. Wonder how happy Matt Schaub is about this?

So by the name you have on here you must be that annoying Raven fan that once again has to chirp in about the DC Pro Football team. Just worry about you team and how they will bounce back after losing the players you have through either retirement, FA, or injury. By the way…he had every intention of signing with Washington, but since the Giants owner slapped that cap penalty on us, we were unable to offer him the money he was seeking, but you know I’m kinda glad we didn’t sign him. I think the DC Pro Football team should stand pat, and go with what they have on the roster and give the back up spot to a hungrier, and younger player. Stay the course and use the depth. No knee jerk reactions are needed.

  9. grindhousegazette says: Jul 29, 2013 3:47 PM

Even if Schaub isn’t thrilled with the move, it wasn’t a bad idea to bring depth in at that position considering how bad they have been hurt in the past when Kushing goes down.

It would be crazy if the broncos saved 3.5 mil by releasing this guy and he ends up knocking the Broncos out of the playoffs by taking a chunk out of manning……yikes

I agree :) He should go to Houston to enjoy the Texan legacy that IS their two division titles and one playoff win (in team history…. against the Bengals.. in two tries).

I mean they have EVERYTHING down there! Lets see.. over-the-hill Andre Johnson, check. Gimpy Arians Foster? check. Matt ‘good til the playoffs’ Shaub? got it. A juicer that’s coming back from an ACL tear? You betcha!

Besides, any team in the AFC South is in a LOT of trouble once they see Indianapolis on the field… so, I think I would’ve gone to the ‘Skins if I were he.

    Go COLTS!

  12. twilson962 says: Jul 29, 2013 3:59 PM

Good for him I guess. Let’s say the Skins offered him even money as the Texans, he’s still better off going to Houston. Texas doesn’t have state income tax, while Virginia on the other hand does.

At least Ear Muffs doesn’t have to worry about Joe hitting him anymore.

Check your facts Colts homer. 2 titles, 2 wins in the last 2 years. More to come.

Indy wont over achieve again. Lucky if they are .500 this year.

    LMAO… Go COLTS!

Hey Colts homer, Andre Johnson is still younger than your best receiver….A gimpy Arian Foster is still better than any running back the Colts have….Cush coming off an acl injury is still better than any linebacker the Colts have…you guys got lucky with that last place schedule you played last years, things should change this year.

    Hey Colts homer.

You are right to be on cloud nine. Great season last year – Motivation from sick coach… Handed best QB prospect in draft in 15 years (as well as having been handed Peyton 15 yrs ago)….had a few lucky wins…. Good season.

However, if you are realistic, you would see that your team has some real holes. Your GM gave how much to those free agents? Really? Tons of salary cap space and he sure went on a bender. Erik Walden was going to struggle for a veteran minimum elsewhere, and you guys signed him for MILLIONS? Wow.

Andre is younger than Reggie (and I still LOVE Reggie, don’t get me wrong), and he had 1600 yards last year. Over the hill my arse.

Foster and Cushing are easily better than any RB and LB on your roster, hands down. And let’s not even bring up JJ Watt, as well as the rest of the team.

Go ahead and live in the past. I think you guys are going to have a comeback year somewhat, even with Luck progressing. Just not that much talent in the backfield or OL.

Shows you’re a Texans fan since you are ignorant. Skins beat Tampa in 2005 playoffs. Beat Detroit in 1999 playoffs. Beat Vikings in 1992 playoffs. Still have won more playoff games as an organization than the Texans. I think you meant the Cowboys haven’t won a playoff game in two decades. Dummy, but expected of a Texans fan.

Loved the guy on special teams and during certain plays. He plays with intensity, seemed like a good guy as well, best of luck.

That said, the best and most fitting nickname I have heard for him:

    Idiot Cannonball.

If Houston has so much better talent than Indy, Then why did they split wins against each other the last two years? Yeah, that’s right, Houston lost to the 2-14 Colts team.

    @therealbleedcoltsblue and @skinsdiehard:

You are both so misinformed and delusional it’s amusing. Phrases like, “Arians Foster” and “one playoff win” highlight your stupidity, @themulesbleedrealbad. For you, @NativeAmericansdiehard, I laugh. Someone with the username “sbchampsagain” probably is not a Texans fan, and is just using this story to take a jab at a team (your team) that plays home games less than 50 miles from where his team does. Think before you tweet/post/comment/whatever.

    Go TEXANS

  27. 8to80texansblog says: Jul 30, 2013 1:02 PM

While the Colts definitely scare me this year, I think it’s more likely they take a step back this year than a step forward.

    -Essentially a new coach
    -No more ChuckStrong emotional bump
    -Massively overturned roster

And Colts fans calling Arian Foster ‘Gimpy’ after the Colts signed Ahmad Bradshaw is laughable at best.

Any rational non homer Colts fan that really looks can see that the Texas are the better team on paper right now (yes I know that’s why they play the games)

But the Texans have a far superior defense,
    far superior running game,
    superior overall offense,
and they take care of the ball better.
