Joe Mays is a Houston Texan.

The Texans signed Mays this afternoon after he worked out for the team this morning, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Mays was cut last week by the Broncos, who didn’t want to pay his $4 million base salary. His most infamous play in Denver came against Texans quarterback Matt Schaub, who lost a chunk of his ear on a brutal shot from Mays that resulted in the NFL suspending Mays for the next week’s game.

Several teams showed interest in Mays, and he visited Washington before deciding against signing. In Houston Mays will provide depth at inside linebacker behind starters Brian Cushing and Darryl Sharpton, both of whom have injury concerns.
