Vernon Davis still working with wideouts, will do whatever 49ers ask

During the 49ers’ mandatory minicamp this offseason, Vernon Davis worked with the team’s wide receivers rather than at his usual spot as the team’s tight end.

Davis isn’t “exclusively” working with wideouts during training camp, as he reportedly did at minicamp, but he’s seeing time there as the 49ers continue to formulate offensive plans for the season. Davis said he’s happy to do anything the 49ers want him to do as he doesn’t “play for the Pro Bowl” and thinks the receiver work will benefit him any way that the team ultimately decides to deploy him.

“I’m willing to step up and do whatever they ask me to do,” Davis said, via Jimmy Durkin of the San Jose Mercury News. “They’ve been having me work with the wide receivers, line up with the wide receivers, pretty much all over the place. It not only helps me at the wide receiver position, it helps me at the tight end position because my feet can get quicker, my route running is better. I get to play around with the routes and figure out how I want to run them.”

The uncertainty at receiver for the Niners after Michael Crabtree’s Achilles injury is going to be a running storyline in camp, but the willingness to use Davis in different spots isn’t really about what position he’s playing. It’s about using the best players on your roster in ways that they are going to be effective, whether that is as an outside target for Colin Kaepernick or as a blocker at the point of attack on a Frank Gore run. You want players like that doing as much as possible at any and every spot they can succeed.

Vernon Davis may be the most physically gifted tight end to ever play in the NFL. His speed and strength is something I have never seen at the position. Right now across the 32 teams there are several top-notch tight ends but few, if any, posses Davis’ talent.

Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham and Tony Gonzalez are all great players but they have the size that Davis does not. With there size the three are able to go-get-it while their speed is inferior to Davis.

Davis should be the main option every play, even with a healthy Michael Crabtree. If you play him with a corner he will utilize his strength. If you play him with a linebacker/safety he will use his speed and find open pasture.

He’s a threat no matter how you slice it. It’s up to the SF 49ers to create the mismatch.

Why move the fastest TE to WR? you already had the perfect mismatch against the slower LBS.
Moving 85 to wr might even up the playing field a bit as he may go against some teams #1cb

    idk.

“I’m willing to step up and do whatever they ask me to do,”

They must have asked him to pose nude on their field for ESPN.

Davis is explosive and fast but he is not a WR. He is a TE and one of the best blacking TE’s in the NFL. Niners need to sign a free agent WR soon. Lloyd, Collie, and some other veterans still available.

If they ask him to go across the middle of the field on the Legion Of Doom he will refuse. He dont want to get laid out again..
Ask Vernon who his daddy is. I promise he will answer a certain Seahawks name.

He is for sure a much better blacking TE than Brent Jones ever was!

My god. Are you spamming F5 on your keyboard waiting for a Niners article to hate on?

Fact is the Niners are the best team in the NFC West. No amount of your pathetic jabs will take that away. So keep hating, cheating, and gloating about a win at home as your teams benchmark for success. The Niners will just continue to win and remain a storied franchise in the NFL. The Seahawks haven’t won anything of significance in their pathetic, what 27 year history? You’re all perennial doormats.

What’s funny about this comment aside from the “blacking” part is Davis didn’t get slammed going across the middle…..it was going up the sideline. It was also one of the most violently legal hits I’ve ever witnessed. But the Legion of Doom is just that….a comical and laughable name that has zero resonation outside of the northwest.

and “iknoweverything” except decent and functional grammar: it’s “he *doesn’t* want to get laid out again ….not cereal box grammar “he don’t”….

This is what he should have been doing since day 1.

there isn’t a DB in the league that can press this guy in coverage, and he has the intelligence and speed to make zone coverage a nonfactor.

the only thing vernon davis isn’t good at is run blocking.

SO, i ask, why try and make him ??

    6’3, 260, forty in 4.3 . . . . . . unreal talent.

I smell a contract renegotiation on the way

He lines up in a lot of different ways in a lot of formations. He’ll line up as a Fullback in the Pistol Wishbone. A Wing back in certain Jumbo sets, even spread out in others. So far Matt Barrows of the Sac Bee has been saying he has been looking really good so far. Also, the rookie Reid had a solid day on Sunday as well.

Also read Kyle Williams was separating himself until he tweaked an injury…. Again.

Davis practicing with the WRs is beneficial to him, the 49ers shift a lot pre-snap so if you have a 3 TE set defenses usually bring in another LB, DT or move the SS down, shift and split Davis out wide it’s an instant mismatch.

Its so easy to tease the FortuWHiner fanbase. Just read some of their replies and one can easily understand why they are coined the FortyWHINERS.
Now I am sure the crazy person that cried out “LEAVE BRITTANY ALONE!!!!” is a WHiner poster here
    More whine with that cheese?
    Hahahahahahah

    1. Troll every 49ers post
    2. Claim Niners fans are the ones whining
    3. ????
    4. Profit

If Vernon ever lines up out wide more than 5 snaps in one game I will eat my hat. This move is mostly about getting McDonald and Celek the most reps possible. More versatility follows and then technique refinement for VD. Lets face it he has mastered the TE position may as well get the young bucks up to speed. Anyone that thinks he will be a mainstay at wideout is fooling themselves

  16. braceyourselffor12 says: Jul 29, 2013 11:43 AM

Iknownothing is just bitter because his QB has to shop in the kids section of department stores.

Oh and Vernon was back the following week helping his team secure their second consecutive NFC West title and not by going 7-9.

P.S it was Raider fans who came up with and are allowed to use forty whiners because they were winning Super Bowls even before us. Again Seattles lack of significance exposes itself even when trying to talk smack.
