Mike McCarthy says Eddie Lacy is not out of shape

AP

Packers running back Eddie Lacy was the subject of a great deal of scrutiny this week when unflattering pictures from training camp surfaced. And “unflattering pictures” is just a nice way of saying he looked fat. Or maybe Gilbert Brown came out of retirement and put on Lacy’s uniform.

But Packers coach Mike McCarthy said today that pictures can be deceiving, and Lacy is in good enough shape to do everything asked of him at practice.

“Going through the conditioning test, he was fine. If we had any concern about any guys they wouldn’t be on the field,” McCarthy said, via Jason Wilde of ESPNWisconsin.com.

Lacy did weigh in at 238 pounds at last month’s minicamp, which was seven pounds heavier than he weighed at the Combine in February. So it’s possible that he added some body fat while recovering from offseason toe surgery. But reports out of Packers camp suggest that he is running the ball well. So for the Packers, Lacy’s weight should be of no concern.

  1. Conditioning test eh? Is this the same test the Packers org uses year after year to test the injury-laden product they put on the field? The same one they use to judge the merry-go-round of RBs at GB?

    Not sure I’d trust that…

  2. Here’s how you get to the bottom of this: ask Mike McCarthy if he thinks Mike McCarthy is out of shape. His answer will give you an accurate assessment of his ability to judge whether or not someone is out of shape.

  3. Weight is the 2nd most important thing Lacy needs to worry about at this point. The first is beating out a very underated Jonathan Franklin for the starting rb job.

  4. As explaining by Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the first day of padded practice included extensive “shoves, taunts and curse words”
    ____________________________________

Perhaps the defense should call him names-

That appears to be the technique they’re using to increase the intensity on their side of the ball (per the article yesterday)…

  5. He looks big but not fat by any means. He just plowed over 3 guys in a red zone drill. Yes, he’s big but that’s why they drafted him. He’s actually got pretty good feet and he can catch the ball out of the backfield as well.

  6. people will not believe GB has a running game until they actually see it, but I watched practice in person over the weekend and Lacy is a beast…crazy strong and he is going to be hard to tackle. The Packers biggest problem last year was third and short…not this year. With a full head of steam Lacy can get one or two yards all by himself. Dude is a huge, incredibly powerful kid. He may only last a few years with his style but I will take it. He demands bringing a safety down to help out and when teams do that…..it makes 12 even better.

  7. I live 30 minutes from Lambeau. Trust me, its easy to get chunky. You have to work at it to eat healthy. Beer, deep fried goodness, sausages, and even more beer. And that’s just breakfast.

  8. Lacy will be fine if he has a whole to run through, but the minute he has to side step in the NFL, done deal for him. At Alabama he barely ever got touched before he was already 4 yards down field, at least that’s how it was in the BCS Title Game. NFL is much different.

  9. Lacy will be fine, not sure how that picture was so unflattering but other pictures from the day showed Lacy looks fine, if they need to him to drop 10 pounds, it will happen.

  10. That picture that is getting all the hooplah was stretched horizontally which made him look fat.

  11. Not a Packers fan, but I am excited to see this guy play. He runs like Steven Jackson…but then again, I could probably do a little running behind Alabama’s line.

  12. I’m seriously looking forward to the Eddie Lacy/Johnathan Franklin combo. The Pack has run the ball better than they’re given credit for during the MM era, especially during Grant’s 07-09 seasons, but it’s never been very exciting.

Can’t wait for these two to get on the field.

  13. As long as he can finally be the back GB was looking for to pick up 3rd and short I don’t care if he looks like a bowling ball. Defenders won’t enjoy getting hit by that in the 4th quarter!

  14. He’s not out of shape dammit, that’s how a pear is suppose to be shaped, fat at the bottom.

  15. You vikings fans love to talk. That’s all you guys do during the off season. Then once the season starts, you guys retreat back to your holes. Just face it, you guys aren’t a threat to the packers. The bears are more of a threat than the queens.

  16. Naw dont even try to sweep this one under the cheese. Lacy looks fat because he is FAT. the packers are always trying to cover the mole
in the cheese. Just like bringing back that jail bird and trying to pass him off as an NFL player.

  17. He wears a brace on his back that made him look thick in that ONE picture. If you look at all the other shots of him, he just looks solid. If I’m a corner, I wouldn’t wanna tackle that dude.

  18. He won’t be an everydown back so why should this matter? The Packers are going to have a 3 back rotation so he’ll probably play only 4-6 snaps as the Packers score within’ 10 plays per drive to the endzone.

  19. The packers aint getting away with this oneway. Lacy looks fat because he is FAT. Lacy is just what the media says he is..a BUST! and this time the packers wont be able to hide the mold. they also have plans to put Johnnie purple drank Jolly back on the field. this is the Green bay packers.

  20. we didn’t draft him to be a lean speed demon. I don’t care what his weight is, as long as he can get us 4 yards when the opposing D knows it’s going to be a run.

  21. Am I the only one that laughed at the guy ealier in the comments that said Lacy only has 4 toes.

What happened to the other foot?

  22. @ubepunkedagain,

Wanna put a wager on that? I’ll bet you $100 that the packers finish over .500 this year. What’s $100? It’s chump change. Surely you can wager that since you’re so overly confident.

  23. He’s big and he’s going to be hard to stop in December when the field conditions turn bad.

The DL guys who are gassed from trying to sack Rodgers and suddenly have this big guy running into them will have their hands full.

As a Vikings fan I think he’ll be just fine and I’m not looking forward to the Vikings having to stop him.

  24. I’m not sure what happened with that one pic .. looks like someone may have altered it. He looks rock solid in all the other shots I’ve seen of him in camp. He’s not a little back to begin with .. basically goes around 5′-11″, 230.

  25. Eddie must be looking forward to humiliating the hapless and tasteless Vikings and Bears again this season – like the Packers have for each of the past 3 years.

The first time is always special.

  26. The guy could not even complete his pro day because he was so out of shape. If he can’t be ready for the biggest interview of his life, what makes anybody believe he will put in the work required to succeed in the NFL. Franklin will run away with the starting job and majority of carries, and Lacy will end up being this season’s Curtis Enis.

Packer organization has not been living up to the losing end of bets as of late so Im not sure anyone would take you up on this.

  28. It’s not possible for a late 2nd round pick to be a “bust”. They would just be a player who didn’t play up to expectations, much like the Vikings never have and never will live up to the expectations their fans have for them in August.

  29. I don’t care if he looks like three Najeh Davenports wearing a single tube top.

Can he pass block? Can he run the ball?

lol pretty sure last time Ponder and Rodgers went head to head, the Pack walked away losers… correct me if Im wrong

  31. Te’o doesn’t think he’s overweight. Te’o hopes to prove he’s the lightest and quickest RB in the history of college sports, after all T’eo made Lacy look that way.

  32. Macarthy is the same guy who says the guy has minor injury, then said guy misses six weeks. No one believes anything Mac says. They are on to mix information campaign.

  33. If Lacy contributes absolutely nothing when the season starts – IN SEPTEMBER – then the Packers may have to be content with just winning the division again. If he contributes a lot… well, it’s going to be a lot of fun.

  34. I’m not saying he’s the next Earl Campbell, but at 235 he can do some damage inside. People are really over reacting about these pictures. He’s going to shag a few of those pounds through camp. The Packers want him at 235-240. He’ll be a great contrast to Franklin.

  35. The photo has been deliberately tampered with / shame on someone.

I just downloaded it and then experimented with that picture. To make the cross section of the football round, I had to make the photo about 19% more narrow. (It had been stretched horizontally to be about 23% wider than real.)

Now, it you multiply his 230 pounds by that same 1.23 tamper factor, you come up with 283 pounds ……… which is about what the fraud photo looks like.

If the guy who tampered with the picture had stretched it 23% vertically, then Lacy would be 7′ 3″ tall and really hard to stop on jump balls.

I’m really eager to see “Thunder & Lighting” (Mr. Lacy and Mr. Franklin) on the field this autumn. I think some defensive backfields are going to have a hard day playing Green Bay. First they get gassed chasing Franklin on first down, then they get flattened by Lacy on second down, then they gotta stop a laser pinpoint pass on a slant.

    Good luck with that.
    .

  36. I smell a lot of fear coming from the other division teams. So there haven’t been plenty of other 238 lb running backs bowling over people? its been a long time since GB had a solid bruiser. and don’t try to sell me Ryan “couldn’t fall forward for a yard to save my life” Grant. Dorsey Levens the last one I remember.

lol, pretty sure last time the vikes drafted a QB, they passed up on Kaepernick and Dalton, then in the 2012 draft, they decided to stick with Ponder instead of drafting Wilson…. FAIL.

Enough fail to make Winfield and Harvin run off to Seattle.

  38. It’s always the people in the rear view mirror that have the biggest mouths. They know we have no intention to stop and let them catch up so they just continue spouting off. It nakes them feel good about themselves. The Packers had a better defense than the Vikings last year and it will be even better this year. Add a multi-dimensional rushing game with Lacy the Beast and it will be all over in the division by week eight.

Actually the Vikings kicked both of them out. Winfield was released and Harvin was traded. But go ahead and remember things the wrong way in your fantasy land.

You don’t have to work at it. All you have to do is go outside for 45 minutes a day and you will burn off all those calories just trying to stay warm.

A little fresh air and you’re good! Have another PBR.

I lived not far from GB for most of my life. Now that I’m down south I have to be much more careful. Those extra brats don’t melt off because it doesn’t get cold and you don’t sweat them off.

  41. @contra,

I’m not the packers organization. I’m just a confident fan who’s willing to make a friendly bet. I’ll be more than happy to mail a $100 to whoever wins the bet. It’s not like its $10000. It’s only $100. It’s easy money if you’re so confident. No Viking fan would EVER make this bet though because you know you’ll be losing your money. Talk is cheap. Put your money where your mouth is.

In two months, half of these troll Viking fans on here will disappear. It happens every year.

  42. I watched ESPN today and Hodges wasn’t saying great things about him – determination, work ethic stuff, lack of seriousness.

During his talk they had video – not still pictures, but video of him coming out of the backfield to catch passes and to me, he looked not only heavy but slow footed and clumsy. I don’t think he caught a pass either. couldn’t stretch.

Sad. Hodges said he doesn’t expect much from this guy and maybe the packers shouldn’t either.
