Redskins running back Tristan Davis has decided to retire, coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday, according to the club’s official Twitter feed.

“Tristan Davis came to my office early this morning and said that his heart wasn’t into playing football anymore, and so he retired,” Shanahan said Tuesday, according to Mike Jones of The Washington Post. “Unless he changes his mind, that’s where he’s at.”

The 27-year-old Davis had stints with Washington, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Miami and Detroit. Davis, who played collegiately at Auburn, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Lions in 2009.

Washington has been granted a roster exemption for Davis. The roster exemption was noted in the NFL’s Tuesday transactions.
