Nick Barnett visits Washington

Nick Barnett AP

Free agent linebacker Nick Barnett is visiting the nation’s capital, and not to go sightseeing.

Barnett will visit Washington and take a physical today, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

One of just three players remaining on our Free Agent Hot 100 who hasn’t yet signed with a team, Barnett started all 16 games for the Bills in each of the last two seasons.

Washington has been looking to add some veteran depth at linebacker, and Barnett would fit the bill.

I just wiki’ed Nick Barnett 2012- Buffalo Bills stats 16 games started 112-tackles 72-solo tackles 40-assisted tackles 2-sacks-3 Forced Fumbles…..Why were the Redskins looking at Joe Mays in the first place?

  2. unbiasfan says: Jul 30, 2013 3:09 PM

    Because Wikipedia is always correct…

He’ll probably want more money than we have.

Some old linebackers there. Good luck catching Flip Wilson and McCoy 4x this season.

  5. iceburgskin202 says: Jul 30, 2013 3:17 PM

@justintuckrule we didn’t have a problem catching them last year! And your team seemed to love catching the A-train Morris carried y’all all over last year!

  6. unbiasfan says: Jul 30, 2013 3:17 PM

Since he’s an ex-Packer play, don’t expect Nick Barnett to be a good tackler…

The FluffyBunnies need as many players as they can get with that asteroid turf feel they play on.
    Hail to the fluffybunnies!

Why haven’t the Vikings brought him in yet?

  11. harrypairotestes says: Jul 30, 2013 3:50 PM

Whenever I hear his name, I think of his scene in a NFL Films SB episode when he was in GB where he said in pregame warmups, “the only thing standing between the Packers and the SB is the NYG.”

    Good memories!!! Good luck!!!

If he wants to play for $27,000 this year the Skins got a steal.

    Have gun. Will travel.

    Wire Nick Barnett. Green Bay.

  15. seatownballers says: Jul 30, 2013 4:12 PM

I hope this guy gets signed.proving that trading away all those picks hurt the team. Their defense is aging. Skins Will go 8-8

  16. justintuckrule says: Jul 30, 2013 4:18 PM

Washington’s LBs are old enough to remember when the word “Redskins” was a term used as common as “colored people”.

  17. skinsfan91 says: Jul 30, 2013 4:44 PM

Yeah, since we have London Fletcher that means our whole LB corps is old. Oh wait, no it doesn’t.

    P.S. He’s wearing a Bane mask.

    *******************************
Yet, they are not old enough to remember the last time the Giants were able to play with the Skins.

    3 out of last 4.

Ummmm……Did it last year. As I recall Skins won 3 out of 4 and put Shady McCoy out a few weeks. And that was without both starting safeties, starting DE and their best pass rusher.

    Keep talking……..

This coming from a Seahawks fan. How’s that Harvin thing working out for you…..

logicalvoicesays says:nick barnett is the greatest backup linebacker in the NFL right now, (only if he signs with us) he is to what all other LB’ers aim to be, come to the redskins and we will make sure u never sniff the superbowl,we need all the extra muscle we can to help carry IRG3 off the field and put him in his custom built hoveround wheelchair HTTR (horrible team the redskins)

  22. skinsaneasylum says: Jul 30, 2013 4:56 PM

    @justintuckrule & @seatownballer

What are you smoking? Yes, London is up there in age….so that makes one player.

Here are the starting ages of the starting Washington LB corps:

    Ryan Kerrigan 24
    Perry Riley 25
    Brian Orakpo 26
    London Fletcher 38

One of four players is over 26…..such an old group!

  23. dirtybird28 says: Jul 30, 2013 4:57 PM

Good depth pick up for a team in need.

  24. greymares says: Jul 30, 2013 5:00 PM

Yes but what is his current status as it relates to banned substances and suspensions that SHOULD be what’s most important to Washington

  25. austinva says: Jul 30, 2013 5:02 PM

perry riley..orakpo…kerrigan…jackson..then one vet in fletch…how is that their LB core is old? i see a lot of youth at LB …way to use you brain fellas

  26. procre8te says: Jul 30, 2013 5:19 PM

I feel he should be signed on the strength of his bane mask alone

  27. xxxfixxxerxxx says: Jul 30, 2013 5:24 PM

I think he has a couple of solid years left. He was badly utilized by our last two D coordinators.
He gave his all for our franchise and he will do the same for the Redskins if they sign him. Plus, the guy is a class act.

  28. juanlongwang says: Jul 30, 2013 5:33 PM

It’s funny the Skins fans think they are finally relevant after winning the NFC east or the first time in 50 years. LOLOL.

  29. justintuckrule says: Jul 30, 2013 5:58 PM

3-4 outside backers are primarily pass rushers. You won’t see Kerrigan or Torn-pec-o in open space so relax with grouping him with Barnett and old man who will be patrolling the middle of the field where Flip will be catching dump offs and gaining 20 a clip.

Speaking of 3-4, as in losing 3 out of 4 to you, do you have a banner hanging in your rafters the year you swept us? We do.

  30. justintuckrule says: Jul 30, 2013 5:59 PM

All you need to know about Barnett is that we have the worst LB core in the NFL right now and we didn’t give him the time of day. So do what the Skins do best and sign him.

  31. bigblu73 says: Jul 30, 2013 6:20 PM

@Justintuckrule— Yes we do have arguably the worst LB tandem in the NFL. Barnett would have been a serious upgrade!! I believe in PeeWee Reese to do the right thing but he’s not perfect!! Would have loveeeeeed to see us grab Barnett!!

  32. doriangray927 says: Jul 30, 2013 6:45 PM

As a Bills fan – I was excited when they signed him. His first season with Buffalo, he was decent. Not great, not terrible; but decent. Last year, however, it became painfully obvious that he had lost a step. He couldn’t cover anyone and was out of place frequently. I was a fan of his but I fully understood his release from the team. Cool dude, but I think he’s toast. Not like Shawne Merriman is toast – but sadly, there’s a reason Nick Barnett is still on the market.

  33. gregmorris78 says: Jul 30, 2013 7:02 PM

Skins can easily sign him if they need him. Just make min two year deal and 2nd year is the payoff.

Defense is young in case you didn’t know

Oh and by the way, skins knew abt Jarvis Jenkins suspension in march. They aren’t blindsided.

  34. logical1voicesays says: Jul 30, 2013 7:09 PM

The only reason anyone would have to visit D.C. is to see the green monuments. That team is pathetic.

  35. channer81 says: Jul 30, 2013 7:11 PM

I don’t think his talents are gonna come cheap. More power to us if we get him.

  36. orangeandblack31 says: Jul 30, 2013 7:28 PM

The Skins younger LB’s suck. 7-9 IF RGIII stays healthy.

  37. packerswin96 says: Jul 30, 2013 8:08 PM

Obviously a Packer fan here, but I can not understand why the Bears have not looked at Barnett at least.

RICHMOND — Free agent linebacker Nick Barnett remained in town Wednesday, a day after arriving here to work out for Washington Redskins officials. But it still was not certain if he would be signed by the team.

A person familiar with the deliberations said a deal remained possible.

Barnett, a former starter for the Green Bay Packers and Buffalo Bills, met with the Redskins’ coaches Tuesday, hours after his workout in front of team officials.

The Redskins have been seeking to add a linebacker since reserve Keenan Robinson suffered a torn pectoral muscle last week. They tried but failed to sign another free agent, former Denver starter Joe Mays, who picked the Houston Texans instead.

Are people still fixated on this? He’s replacing Keenan Robinson, the fourth-string MLB who played 65 snaps last season.

Washington has the second youngest starting defense in the league, and the Redskins were fifth in the league in rushing defense last year, with their first string ROLB on IR. In other words, this issue is not a concern to anybody familiar with the NFC East.

And speaking of familiarity, where exactly are the rafters at MetLife?
