Reese’s clock leads to a Giant shot at Jets

Jerry Reese AP

The Giants and Jets share a stadium, and that’s about it.

But as part of the process of putting his team on notice, Giants General Manager Jerry Reese said he was installing a clock in the Giants locker room, to count down the minutes until someone is playing the Super Bowl in their building.

It was almost Jets-like in its bold confidence, harkening back to Rex Ryan guarantees, even if it was far more subtle.

“I would never, ever compare Jerry Reese to anything associated with the Jets,” Giants guard Chris Snee said Monday, via Gary Myers of the New York Daily News.

Zing.

While the Giants disappointed down the stretch last year, they are certainly a better bet to host a Super Bowl on their home field than their neighbors. And perhaps living so close together has caused a little bravado to creep into the normally mature Giants offices.

When the Jets are using the locker room just put up a sign that says doomsday clock.

  2. touchdownroddywhite says: Jul 30, 2013 8:01 AM

I don’t think the clock signifies bravado as much as urgency. Just sayin’ that he’s t trying to remind them that once the season starts, time is constantly running out and the pressure to perform well needs to constantly be there.

  3. betterandbetterthan says: Jul 30, 2013 8:03 AM

It isn’t remotely close to a guarantee. It’s a motivational tactic. There is X amount of time before someone is playing the Super Bowl in our building. Let us try to be someone. Not some inane we are going to be playing when this clock counts down.

  4. reporterofthetruth says: Jul 30, 2013 8:09 AM

    Yeah, screw the Jets.

  5. bigjimatch says: Jul 30, 2013 8:12 AM

He should install a clock counting down to when Giants fans will start calling for Coughlin and Eli to fired and benched, respectively. Week 2 is a safe bet.

  6. losangelesbillsofbuffalo says: Jul 30, 2013 8:15 AM

I am sorry, but Jerry Reese’s action of putting a clock in the locker room to motivate his team regarding the Super Bowl is not a shot at the Jets. The Giants are their own football team and have their own things to do. It seems people reading too much between the lines in order to take their own shots at the Jets. The Jets aren’t that good of a football team, and I can admit to having my own fun surrounding the topic of them not being a good football team, but it seems a bit over the top to straight up create the drama out of real life scenarios simply to keep the topic going.

  7. dexterismyhero says: Jul 30, 2013 8:19 AM

Well someone will be playing there, but neither of those teams will make it.

  8. spellingcops says: Jul 30, 2013 8:21 AM

I took it as intended motivation. As if to say: “It’s up to you guys whether or not someone else plays the SB in our house”. But I guess that wouldn’t really generate headlines.

  9. jr4real says: Jul 30, 2013 8:25 AM

Obviously the wrong interpretation from someone who probably never played sports.

It is not a statement that the Giants are going to make it. It is a motivational tactic announcing that SOMEONE is playing in there house and if they don’t make it they should be embarrassed. It has nothing to do with the Giants proclaiming they are going to be there.

  10. infectorman says: Jul 30, 2013 8:30 AM

They’re especially adept at faking injuries in their own building. Silly Gints, every body knows you cheat

  11. getyourownname says: Jul 30, 2013 8:33 AM

Will they be covering up the clock on weeks the Jets play in the stadium?

  12. tombradyswig says: Jul 30, 2013 8:56 AM

I’d be $50 on it right now!!!!

Niners vs Denver and after Peyton gets crunched in a snowing defensive game. The nfl will not allow another cold city Super Bowl if the weather is horrible. I see it impossible for any other cold weather town to get one outside of the big apple anyways.

  14. hehateme2 says: Jul 30, 2013 9:22 AM

  15. youarejealousof6rings says: Jul 30, 2013 9:22 AM

Get your own stadium. Being two of some of the richest franchises in the world, they should be embarrassed to have to share a stadium.

  16. cruuuzcontrol says: Jul 30, 2013 9:26 AM

Far more subtle? I’d say it’s so subtle that it didn’t occur to anyone but Gary Myers and, now, you. This is a far, far cry from any type of bravado.

You think they built a billion dollar stadium a few years ago and didn’t include separate locker rooms for each team?

  18. whatjusthapped says: Jul 30, 2013 9:35 AM

The Jets should respond by installing their own clock with a count down to the end of the regular season why Rex is finally fired.

  19. thefiesty1 says: Jul 30, 2013 9:36 AM

Does anybody really want to play in the Super Bowl in New Jersey in February. I didn’t think so.

  20. realdealsteel says: Jul 30, 2013 9:40 AM

Reese is just keeping his guys focused on the prize. Of course, losers like the Jets would think it’s about them because they can’t grasp the concept of “keeping their eyes on the prize” because they don’t know what the “prize” is. Because their losers.

Eli’s done more in his career, then the Jets have done in their entire existence. End of story.

  21. kev86 says: Jul 30, 2013 9:49 AM

Giants haven’t had a losing season under Reese. Snee is on point.

  22. eatitfanboy says: Jul 30, 2013 9:51 AM

I don’t understand why the clock signals any type of over confidence.

It simply states a fact. In February of next year, two teams will be playing the Super Bowl in his team’s home stadium.

It’s simply a reminder of what they are working towards. Nothing more. I’m not a Giants fan, but I think you are making something out of nothing here.

  23. ampats says: Jul 30, 2013 9:54 AM

Get your own stadium. Being two of some of the richest franchises in the world, they should be embarrassed to have to share a stadium.

You should be embarrassed to have an opinion that uninformed.

It has nothing to with money. There is simply no available real estate in the metro area. It’s too built up and too valuable. There are condos in Manhattan worth more than all of the land Heinz Field sits on.

  25. dynaco says: Jul 30, 2013 10:02 AM

  26. thehouseofho says: Jul 30, 2013 10:25 AM

This is nowhere near a show of bravado. The Giants have some kind of motivational motto every single year since the Jerry Reese/Tom Coughlin era. All he’s saying is that time is counting down to the Super Bowl at MetLife stadium and the Giants should want to be in their locker room when that clock strikes zero.

If there ever was a shot at the Jets, it should’ve been last year (or it may have been the year before) when they wore shirts that read, “Talk is cheap. Play the game.”

  27. mjzaky says: Jul 30, 2013 10:35 AM

Wow. You all missed the point of the title by a long shot.

Reese’s clock LEADS to a Giant shot at the Jets. Meaning – Reese’s clock isn’t the shot at the Jets, Chris Snee’s answer when he was asked if Reese’s move was Jets-like was.

He said: ““I would never, ever compare Jerry Reese to anything associated with the Jets”.

  28. barrywhererufrom says: Jul 30, 2013 10:39 AM

If you win you get away with stuff like this..along with Victor Cruz’s comments and not making the playoffs the last year..both Super Bowl wins had a lot of luck to them but they still won them. Doesn’t mean they are classy like the new york media makes them out to be..

  29. nananatman says: Jul 30, 2013 10:58 AM

The clock was a motivational tool, it is ticking down to the Super Bowl that two unidentified teams will play in. I’m sure the logo on the clock doesn’t say 6000 minutes until the Giants and not Jets play in the Super Bowl. Butt Fumble.

  30. larrydavid7000 says: Jul 30, 2013 11:00 AM

Well the gm finally agrees with what I have been saying your time is up. Your 4 lucky year run is up and time to move back to the basement. tick tock that’s the sound of when Redskins will be playing on Feb. 2 2014 and win.

  35. bluereign says: Jul 30, 2013 12:00 PM

No one should ever associate Jerry Reese with the Jets. He isn’t saying the Giants are going to win the Super Bowl or even go to it. He’s motivating his players with a clock in their own locker room. Can’t get much more discreet.

  36. dlk47823 says: Jul 30, 2013 12:09 PM

I’ll give the Giants their Super Bowl (with a 9-7 record), but that’s the only playoff appearance in 4 years. That’s what Reese is upset about. One less than the other team in NY.

Comments like this show why the giants will always be a low rent organization. In the past year or so its been the giants taking all kinds of shots at the Jets, while the Jets have been quiet… Sounds like the giants have a bit of an inferiority complex going on there. Maybe losers like chris snee (who?) should worry about his own joke of a team and their even bigger joke of a QB before he gets his little panties in a bunch about other teams. Until then the giants will never be a respectable organization and will always be the little brother in NY

    jets0wnny,
You are an idiot. Talk about a joke of a QB… How many Superbowls has your bean counting QB won??? In fact, How many have ANY Jet QB’S won???? Only 1, From Joe Namath OVER 40 YEARS AGO… We have only won 2 Superbowls in the past 6 years… In the past 6 years here are the Jets season records
    07: 4-12 GREAT RECORD
    08: 9-7 GREAT RECORD
    09: 9-7 ANOTHER GREAT SEASON
    10: 11-5 LUCKY SEASON..
    11: 8-8 BACK TO REALITY
    12: 6-10 DOWNWARD SPIRAL
    WHERE IS YOUR CHAMPIONSHIPS????
    ZERO

  48. giantsfan64 says: Jul 30, 2013 4:36 PM

  49. jetsownny says: Jul 30, 2013 5:38 PM

Hey giantfan64 just like every other giants frontrunner you clearly know nothing about football so let me give you a dose of reality. You can stop waxing poetic about your two little super bowls because everyone outside of NY knows your joke of a team didn’t earn either of
them. Great teams don’t back into the playoffs then have championship games handed to them on a silver platter by the refs (I DARE you to dispute that). Lets look at the giants last 6 seasons shall we?

07: 10-6. oh my how epic
    08: 12-4. Cakewalk schedule
    09: 8-8. LMFAO
10: 10-6. Yeah such world beaters
11: 9-7. And thats with 2 games handed to you
    12: 9-7. The downfall begins

Not to mention the giants quit in December in ALL of those years. And when you were lucky enough to make the playoffs it was just that, luck. So take your delusions of grandeur somewhere else cause everyone who matters doesn’t buy it

  50. jetsownny says: Jul 30, 2013 5:40 PM

Also let’s not forget that the Jets did go to the championship game in two consecutive seasons. The last time the giants did that, color TV had yet to be invented and no one had yet heard of The Beatles
