Broncos lure Lilja out of retirement

As unretired centers go, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning may have preferred Jeff Saturday.  But with the center position in shambles and Manning presumably interested in not having whatever warm body installed at the position thrown into the quarterback’s knees, he’ll likely settle for Ryan Lilja.

The Broncos have announced that Lilja has agreed to terms with the team.

Lilja, 31, has played for the Colts and Chiefs.  In Indy, Lilja was a guard in the line of scrimmage that protected Peyton.

Hopefully, Lilja’s presence will ensure that the Broncos won’t have any problems in protection.

LOL! Were Olin Kreutz or Kevin Mawae not available?

  2. truthfactory says: Jul 31, 2013 8:37 PM

If he came back because he wants to play, it could be a good fill in. If he’s back for one last paycheck then sucks to be them. Desperate times call for desperate measures

  3. JMClarkent says: Jul 31, 2013 8:38 PM

He was in the line of scrimmage? So is the offensive line the point on the field where the offense starts a play?

    great move by John!

  5. i4jelway7 says: Jul 31, 2013 8:47 PM

FYI Lilja rated higher than Koppen who was the starting C last yr… Lilja’s pass protection will improve greatly w/ 18’s quick release

Great move, played good for the worst team in the league last season. Now he gets to play for a winner and beat those losers into the ground twice this season

    Great pick-up for the Broncos.
    Hurrah.
What’s wrong with the second year pro Philip Blake and why is he not ready to step in?
Nothing mentioned in the Denver Post as to what is the problem.
He was drafted to take the center position some day.
    What’s up here?

I still haven’t forgiven Polian for using Lilja as a scapegoat for the Super Bowl loss and not bringing him back, only to see him make the pro bowl the next year in KC. Solid signing by Denver.

  10. jredshoes says: Jul 31, 2013 9:09 PM

So Lilja was a great guy but he’s past his prime and retires basically because even KC won’t offer him a new deal this year. I understand the logic on his part to be wanted and play with Peyton again but for those of you talking like he a a great pick up think about the fact that he’s your 3rd choice

  11. tooz72 says: Jul 31, 2013 9:14 PM

HAHAHA..Horsehead Manning is gonna get mauled this year

  12. kcflake says: Jul 31, 2013 9:15 PM

Lilja was a weak O Lineman for the Chiefs. We Look Forward to Kicking your Ass Twice this year Ryan! Way to stab the Chiefs in the back.

  13. blackchief29 says: Jul 31, 2013 9:37 PM

Never seen a lineman get launched as high in the air as Kevin Love did to Lilja. Lilja should be a human turnstile for Dontari Poe en route to father Manning.
    Serious mismatch

  14. mcguenther13 says: Jul 31, 2013 9:37 PM

Better off as a guard, but knows Peyton’s cadence better than anyone…..should be solid snapping the ball to his General

    LOL!

  16. raiderapologist says: Jul 31, 2013 10:11 PM

Players retire because they either have enough money or can’t play any more. It’s hard to blame Lilja for quitting on the Chiefs because they suck, but if you have to pull a guy out of retirement to be your starting center, you might have issues.

NEWSFLASH: Polian was just throwing Lilja under the bus before Peyton Manning got there first to do it for him. He was just sparing him the bad publicity. Manning had done it before and Polian did not want to see the team fractured again. We all know Manning takes his frustration out by blaming his own teammates for his short comings.

If you want to see what Denver fans really think of Manning and this o-line issue, google “orange mane manning blames offensive line.”

    Interesting…..

He is second choice to a man who was benched last season. PFM is just pulling names out of a hat and seeing what John is willing to do lol

skins d line gonna kill this
    fool oct 27..skins will finish
    what they started on manning..
if u dont know, the redskins
    gave peyton his sore neck..

Looking forward to weakness up the middle of the Denver line this year!

  21. xgarcia22 says: Jul 31, 2013 11:17 PM

It’s funny to watch stupid Broncos fans say how this is a “good signing” when they obviously don’t have a clue how washed up this guy is…hilarious

  22. jdphx says: Jul 31, 2013 11:50 PM

Lilja was a pretty solid Guard. Key word WAS.

And playing Guard is different than Center.
The C calls the protections, and is the brains of
the O-line. His proficient times are 3-4 years gone.

I think Peyton’s neck is twitching right about now…

  23. gloryfromheaven says: Jul 31, 2013 11:51 PM

Lilja actually graded out better then Koppen last year by multiple statistical sources. I’m intrigued what their offensive line is capable of doing this year, especially when they added Alex Gibbs as the offensive line consultant….

  24. esorscher says: Aug 1, 2013 1:02 AM

everyone knows the broncos have “issues”, everyone knows that their #1 choice and #2 choice are both out with injury, all anyone is saying is that for a #3 choice they could do worse. but go ahead and hate on them because thats easy. BTW PFFs #14 center last year

  25. mrwalterisgod says: Aug 1, 2013 1:14 AM

Does it matter? Peyton will still crumble in January.

  26. wryly1 says: Aug 1, 2013 2:00 AM

The seat of both Lilja’s and Manning’s pants are going to get awfully grass stained this season.

Are you talking about when the Pats intercepted it and Kevin Love popped Lilja while he wasn’t looking? Yeah, blindside cheap shots are always a mismatch buddy….

  28. i4jelway7 says: Aug 1, 2013 4:32 AM

jredshoes: Lilja retired because the queefs suck & they as well as a few other teams tried their best to talk him out of retirement, but had no luck.. just goes to show it matters who is doing the talking– Thanks John! solid move

  29. lagg1 says: Aug 1, 2013 5:19 AM

Hey Ryan -you get t meet a healthy Haloti Ngata in game 1-good luck with that-you’ll need it.

  30. joetoronto says: Aug 1, 2013 5:29 AM

This is a desperation move by the drunk, horse face.

  31. conormacleod says: Aug 1, 2013 7:38 AM

3rd center of the season already, and its a guy that was on the couch last week. Spin it any way you like, but I would be nervous if I was a Broncos fan.

  32. afcdomination says: Aug 1, 2013 7:54 AM

lilja didn’t quit because the team sucked, he quit because he was getting thrown around, and was beat the heck up after playing OUT OF POSITION at center.

and Denver signs him as a center, and there is praise everywhere. please. he came back for the 2.2 million.

  33. honkeyt says: Aug 1, 2013 8:00 AM

Vance Walker and Pat Sims are going to gobble this guy and in comes Sio Moore with the sack.

  34. jasonculhane says: Aug 1, 2013 10:07 AM

Great pickup!! Shows me their not messing around…Remember Ramirez has been playing center all along, Lilja just adds depth and leadership to an already great line that’s hampered. Elway is setting up for the long haul. By week 10 the Broncos are gonna have an offensive line with depth that includes

Vasquez,Walton,Clady,Beatles/Ramirez,Franklin/Lilja………..They should be able pound the ball late in games

  35. jasonculhane says: Aug 1, 2013 10:14 AM

Yea, Lilja really sucks…Last time I checked all the Cheifs COULD do was run the ball…

This post is wrong..Its implying Lilja is gonna play center now, he won’t unless Ramirez gets injured. Ramirez is their center until Walton gets back, he’s been their center before Koppen was signed…How many times does this need to be explained? This move was really to back up Ramirez if somehow he gets hurt before November, then Lilja in an emergency would be familiar with the offence signals. Lilja will probably challenge Franklin or Zane Beatles or back them up. But in the meantime you got a familiar lineman teaching these younger guys the offense…Great pickup!

To all the Chef’s fans everywhere…
There’s a reason why your team always has a top 3 pick every year and its not because you are “kicking anyone’s asses the year before”. Thank you and shut up..

Ryan…..is this you or your momma replying? Yes, serious mismatch and yes, absolutely launched like a bag of rice. Love took him on a rocket ride pretty easy.

Idiots out in full force today. You know it is a slow day in usually boring Chief’s country when they break away from attempting to coax a stray cow out of the tall grass to throw out a Chiefs are going to dominate anybody blast! Dontari Poe; You guys have not cut him yet? Back to fields KC, Betsy is in heat.
