Jermichael Finley wants to keep a lower profile

Jermichael Finley AP

It used to be easy to find Jermichael Finley, primarily by having working ears.

But the Packers tight end has taken a different approach to this offseason, becoming intentionally boring after years of talking his way into unwanted attention.

According to Jason Wilde of ESPNWiscon, Finley offered up a whole bunch of nothing during an eight-minute group interview Wednesday.

Specifically, Finley said he was just playing football (at least 11 times), doing things the right way (five), doing what he was supposed to (three), getting better every day (three) and everything will take care of itself (four).

Afterward, he said it was deliberate.

It’s more knowing your position and knowing where you’re at. I wasn’t doing it wrong [before], but there’s a way to go about it,” Finley said. “This is what you do for a living. Right now, I’m on a pedestal, so everything I say, . . . I just want to do everything the right way, just squash out everything.

“You live and learn. But at the same time, it’s all about doing things the right way, and that’s what I’m about right now. The football field comes easy. That’s no problem. It’s doing things the right way and how my image is in the public.

“I would say (the way I was before) wasn’t making me comfortable. . . . So why not just do it the right way? I’ve got a career that took off on path that, I mean, I didn’t know being outspoken was going to put me on. Anything I say is big-time, so it’s weird to me. But if you play football, everything else will take care of itself.”

Even coach Mike McCarthy joked that of all the things he liked about Finley in camp: “He’s not in the media every day. That’s a good thing.”

Finley’s also in the final year of his contract, so he has economic incentive to behave.

And if he lets his play speak for itself, everything should work out.

Can’t wait to watch Desmond Bishop hit the breaks out of this guy

Dude doesn’t believe in the packer way he will be a vike in 2014

Really nice to have Jermichael back, definitely showing some maturity and focus. He’s a character, he says things that generally mean well but come off wrong. Props to the Packers for sticking with him, hope he has a great season!

So he wants a lower profile?

Sounds like he wants to play for the Vikings.

  6. packhawk04 says: Jul 31, 2013 6:06 PM

Bishop is the perfect vikings LB. Tackles well, good against the run, couldn’t cover me against the pass.

  7. filthymcnasty1 says: Jul 31, 2013 6:40 PM

Its tough keeping a low profile when your team contends every year.

  8. PowerMad says: Jul 31, 2013 6:56 PM

It’s hard to keep a low profile when you drop so many passes. He’s lucky to be a Packer because such a small market means his incompetence is overlooked by national media focused on covering teams and players in major markets. For most of his career, really, he’s only been known for running his mouth. TT and Co. misfired on this guy, and they can’t yet admit it.

    Packers=Last

Well, you’re already doing a great job….Vikings fans don’t even know your on the field …

With no Jennings expect Finley to be one of the main targets. Nelson and Cobb are not #1 recievers. There is no clear cut #1 receiver on this team. JF could lead the team in catches.

With the pitiful defense GB has expect AR to be throwing ALOT, even for him

  11. hscorpio says: Jul 31, 2013 7:24 PM

Contract years have a way of changing things. I hope he tries actually catching the ball in another effort to shake things up in the drive for a nice payday. And blocking….we’ll nevermind. Let’s not get crazy.

  12. gbmickey says: Jul 31, 2013 7:44 PM

The Packers have no number one receiver? This has to be one of the dumbest comments I have read in a while. Our 3rd receiver is better than your #1.

Speaking of defenses if ours is so poor what does it say about yours which finshed lower than the Packs?

No surprise where theae comments originate.

  13. irishgary says: Jul 31, 2013 7:59 PM

Finley is in a contract year and will have a big year for the pack. Someone will over pay him next year (hello Vikings) but not the packers Ted Thompson will do the right thing.

  14. bla bla bla says: Jul 31, 2013 8:38 PM

Finley got over the drops in the second half of last season. And he will flat-out beat Desmond Bishop if Bishop is ever lucky enough to even be in the same area code as Finley.

  15. beerbratscheese says: Jul 31, 2013 9:10 PM

allday28, I don’t know why you don’t think Jones, Cobb or Nelson aren’t #1 receivers. But even if they aren’t, they’re light years better than what Minnesota has, even with the addition on Jannings.

And yea, let’s talk about GB’s pitiful 11th ranked defense. Since the Vikings’ D was ranked 16th last year, what does does that make them? God-awful?

——————————————————————————————————————————– one, viking’s fan’s like to talk a lot of smack, nelson and cobb aren’t number 1 reciever’s? james jones? i think u need a little history lesson. u should look up the stat’s from last year. james jones had 14 td’s cobb had 8 td’s nelson had 7 with missing 3 games. greg jenning’s had 4 td’s with missing 8 games. you can say they aren’t number 1 wideout’s all you want but they are by far more talanted a group than any wideout’s the viking’s have. sure u signed gj and drafted a kid in the first round but he hasn’t played in the nfl yet. just another viking fan living in a dream world.

Don’t worry, when they’re 3-7, it will be pretty easy to keep a low profile.

i hope any vikings fan that comes on here and talks about how bad the packers defense is realizes the packers beat them 6 out of the last 7 times they played. doesnt say much for your own team.

    ATTENTION EVERYONE…
    I HAVE A MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT…
PUT ALL CAMERAS ON ME FOR THIS ONE…
I have “reformed” I NO LONGER WANT ATTENTION.
I NEED YOUR ATTENTION because I AM SERIOUS ABOUT NOT WANTING ATTENTION. NOW PUT that in print and publicize it everywhere. I WANT A LOW PROFILE!

In all honesty, the only way that any of this makes sense is if this is his way of saying don’t throw him the ball because he can’t catch it.

I hope he’s ready to earn his pay, keep his mouth shut, do his job, and it results in a deserved long term deal. He will then get all the attention he can handle without trying to generate it after-hours.

You wanna talk futility? Who is the team that has been around the longest, not just in the NFL, but in any of the four major North American sports leagues and has never won the championship of their sport? The vikings OWN that distinction and each new year only adds to it. 52 years and counting. That’s the ultimate in futility. In fact…

… no other major North American sports team has ever had that much futility.

Since the Viking Toads started talking dirt on this thread , allow me to go on their thread and remind them that #1 they have zero super Bowl wins
    they play indoors
    they play on carpet
    Ponder is their QB
    Their State allows Gay marriage
    They wear purple
and did I mention that AP & Jarod Allen are both discussing what records they are going to break this year not one word on the TEAM winning
    Pathetic losers

What does the state of Minnesota allowing gay marriage have to do with their NFL franchise?

I’m a Packers fan, and even I can’t understand how people like you feel comfortable opening your mouth and displaying your bigotry so easily. Do us all a favor and keep the discussion focused on FOOTBALL.
