Nick Barnett bolsters the defense in Washington

AP

After visiting Washington and working out for the team today, free agent linebacker Nick Barnett has signed a one-year contract.

Barnett confirmed the signing with a four-character tweet, writing, “HTTR,” for “Hail to the Redskins.”

The Washington Post reports that Barnett met with defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, “fell in love” with the team’s coaching staff and is particularly excited to be playing with linebacker London Fletcher.

Barnett started all 16 games each of the last two seasons for the Bills after playing eight seasons for the Packers before that.

  1. Its a sign that things are looking good in dc, when a solid veteran is ok with signing on to be a back up. Its ashame the skins needed him because Robinson got hurt again, but he fills a need and now has a chance to learn the D as a backup and if he plays well maybe replace London when he retires this offseason. I call this a win win

  2. WHO?

Fell in love with the coaching staff because some of them actually knew who he was.

    SMH…

  3. That’s why he was on the street until today and nobody wanted him because he is so great. Bottom line he can’t run or cover anymore so the only thing he will bolster is the other teams passing stats.

  4. All those who attack London Fletcher need to remember – he has more energy and effectiveness than the entire defenses of the NY Marabitches, Philtydelphia Iggles, and Jerry’s Girls.

London may be getting old, but he still runs circles around most young players and he is a leader.

Adding Barnett to this team adds depth, costs next to nothing, and only makes the team that much stronger with his leadership.

It is kinda funny that the Redskins are adding pieces at low cost and still getting slammed. Redskin haters never give up trying to insult a team that has turned the corner and no longer builds a fantasy team and wins every off season. Now that adults run the place, we only care about winning it all now.

HTTR. We might even overcome our mediocre QB, The China Doll.

  5. Enjoy. Can’t plug a hole. Gets rub over or makes tackles down field. Also can’t cover.

  6. @skinsfan91 wish Keenan Robinson was healthy but the signing of nick Barnett was due to him tearing his pectoral muscle this past week. Great signing nonetheless. HTTR

  7. Sweet signing! Adding a 32 year old to back up or play along side a 38 year old. They better order a few more AEDs. It’s going to be funny watching these two guys falling on themselves and the Skins D getting torched.

  8. As a bills fan I can tell ya them letting fletcher go was a huge mistake as he has proven in the past 5-6 yrs and I feel them letting Barnett follow the same path will be an exact duplicate to fletcher. I love how u all say he’s injury prone hasn’t missed a game in two years

  9. After visiting Washington and working out for the team today, free agent linebacker Nick Barnett has signed a one-year contract with them anyway.

Barnett confirmed the signing with a four-character tweet, writing, “HTTR,” for “Hate These Terrible Racists”.

  10. lol @ poster who said ‘injury prone’. Miss the bit in the article that said he started all 16 games the last two years? He only missed games twice in 8 years on the Packers!

  11. They need somebody to help lift and carry IRG3 off the field and onto the medical table.

  12. I bet if he signed with the Giants, skins fans woulda said “dudes overated and washed up” now they got him, hes a great signing, perfect situati, BLAH BLAH, lol

  13. Say what you will about the guy, but hes been a quality linebacker his whole career, not mind blowing numbers. But he does do things that don’t show up on the stat sheet.

  14. Fan. Of barnett, but man did he decline past few yrs. got abused in coverage, missed alot of tackles. Dont get carried awat “HTTR”s, Barnett IS, a back up.

  15. Smart draft picks, smart free agent pickups, and next year will be $40 million under the cap. Look out for this team

  16. I thought he was a good player in Buffalo. Redskins got a good one.

Not at all “injury prone” it must have been all that cheese in Wisconsin 🙂

  17. The guy is as washed up as any veteran LB signing in the NFL, but Redtail fans all say “great signing!”

If any other team in the NFCE signed this guy, Redtail fans would have nothing but negativity.

Silly Redtail fans… You are in for a rude awakening this year.

  18. good luck with that clown. His Packer career is best known for ridiculous celebrations on routine tackles or worse, celebrations for tackles 5 yards downfield or tackles in the 4th Qtr when teams had a lead and were running the ball to run out the clock.

The guy is dumber than a box of rocks so this signing has not much to “hail” about.

  19. This from a guy who’s QB is one blow to the neck from being done…

Get real any player can get hurt at anytime whether OTA’s, mini camp, training camp or during the season. All these attacks on RGIII is nonsense…Big Ben, Brady, Ryan, Peyton, Stafford have all been hurt in the pocket so it doesn’t matter whether you are in or out of the pocket, or whether you get hit or not injuries will occur.

  20. The genius who said ‘another injury prone guy in DC’ needs to do his homework….Barnett has started all 139 games of his career….sounds injury prone to me, not at all.

  21. The guy has had 100 plus tackles every season besides the two he was injured since 2003. I call than consistent.

  22. Him and London in the middle ,means Tackles, tackles, tackles. Say what you want about him ,but he is a tackling machine, just check his stats. HTTR

You got that totally right. He is a backup. Barnett was a depth signing to replace Keenan Robinson, a second year player who was “abused in coverage” and “missed ‘alot’ of tackles” in the 65 snaps he took last year. So having Barnett as a third/forth string linebacker is something to be excited about.

  24. I’m not excited about this signing. I think it’s a good signing considering our situation. The reason he wasn’t picked up earlier is that he still had to get some work done on his knee. He was getting feelers, liked the redskins situation most.

  25. It’s a great signing – adds depth at low cost for a one year deal. If it doesn’t pan out, he won’t be re-signed.

Btw London and Rob Jackson combined for 9 INTs last year. And so I ask: Do we really need Barnett for coverage? No! So, everybody relax about his coverage skills.
