The Dolphins signed Julius Pruitt after working out several wide receivers on Tuesday, but the group of players vying for the job wasn’t as big as it could have been.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that the team also wanted to bring former Cardinals wide receiver Early Doucet in for a look, but that he was already scheduled to work out for the Seahawks. The Seahawks learned later Tuesday that they’ll be down a receiver for at least a large portion of the 2013 season when they got word that Percy Harvin needed hip surgery.

Doucet, a third-round pick in Arizona in 2008, had his best season in 2011 with 54 catches for 689 yards and five touchdowns but slumped down to 28 catches for 207 yards last season as the Cardinals offense slumped as a whole. He was released in March and hasn’t generated much, if any, action as a free agent up to this point.

The Seahawks have also been practicing without wide receiver Sidney Rice, who is in Switzerland having treatment done on his knee. Coach Pete Carroll insists Rice will not miss any games, but his injury history added to the lack of Harvin makes it all the likelier that the Seahawks will be looking for help at the position.
