Titans put Jake Locker in the pistol

AP

For all the moves they made this offseason, the Titans know their season hinges on the growth of quarterback Jake Locker.

So in an effort to give him the best chance, they’re trying to tailor some things to his skills.

According to Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com, the Titans were running plays from the pistol formation last night.

Given Locker’s mobility, setting him up in the half-shotgun formation should give him a little more room to move, and help create space for him.

“It doesn’t quite tip off what runs you can do when the back is offset,” Titans coach Mike Munchak said. “The offense has more options for what they can do.”

He has the ability to run, and if they can get him comfortable, it could be a good fit with their personnel.

  1. This is Jake’s year to make his mark. Perhaps last two seasons have had legitimate “reasons” for less than stellar performance, but it’s make or break for Jake.

  2. I tend to lean towards it being better for Chris Johnson. He killed teams in his 2000 yard season on cut backs in the stretch/zone running scheme. He’d have numerous options in the read/pistol plays and with one cut (his specialty) can excelerate into the hole and be gone. He’ll be deadly.

  3. At what point does everyone be honest and give Shanahan & RG3 credit for starting this fad? seems like every team waited to see how effective the read option could be then jumped on the bandwagon……HTTR

The Redskins sure are influencing the whole league.
    ________

And IRGIII should be influencing every qb thinking about running out of it.

  5. Listen to all these Skinsfans… Acting like “new winners” (new money). Act like you’ve been there before. People are tired of you guys mentioning IRGIII in every comment. On every subject. Has it been that long since you’ve won that you don’t know how to act as a winning fanbase?

  6. These guys will lead the league in rushing yards as a team.

Locker doesn’t need to light teams up with passing as long as he is effecient and they play solid defense.

I could see them 9-7 or better this year.

  7. that’s cool…… but last I checked everyone was calling the redskins offense a gimmick! pretty different view once their favorite team joins along in the “gimmick”

  8. The 49’ers showed the league how to run the pistol. The Redskins showed the league how to ruin a rookie quarterback.

  9. Given that Jake Locker led all QBs in yards-per-carry last season, this should be interesting. That said, why did the Titans wait until Jake’s third year to install this? This is the team that was effectively running the read-option with Vince Young and Chris Johnson four years before it became the NFL’s hot item.

  10. Management need to put Jake in a “Locker” and throw away the keys, the last thing we need is another NFL player without any talent with a “Pistol”…enough said

  11. This is a good move for the Titans as the pistol worked well for other teams with mobile QBs. Unless teams figure out how to defend it this year.

  12. It’s been said that Loggains’ offense is perhaps a little more like Mike Heimerdinger’s and not so much Chris Palmer’s. Which…no complaints here. I think Dinger had a lot more imagination with his play calling and use of personnel (not unlike Dinger’s mentor, Shanahan). I’m not sold on Locker yet — love the intangibles, not so sure about the pure mechanics — but it wouldn’t surprise me if he has a lot fewer critics at the end of the year. Not hard to root for him, he’s a great kid.

  13. It’s quite annoying how PFT “protects” certain players like locker, bradford etc, but destroys others like gabbert, sanchez(he is terrible) and my boy kap.

  14. the 49’ers are the team that ran it best. They actually block for the Qb. The skins ran a watered down version of it and it got their QB killed.

The Pistol’s origins go decades back, Shanahan did not create; get a clue.

  15. Shanahan and the skins deserve credit for showing teams the pistol worked in the NFL?

That’s ridiculous. You know what started this? The wildcat. It showed teams they could manipulate the movement of lineman with simple fakes and eliminate the need to block all of them. Teams just needed guys that could also play QB as well as run which most college teams weren’t putting out. They were getting Pat White not RGIII, Kaepernick and Wilson. As the college game spread out it was ineveitable that good throwing QB’s that could run would come out of it. The Skins are one of the initial benefactors but hardly the originators.

  16. If we took a poll on the worst fans, the Redskins would easily come out #1, Steelers and Seahawks tied for #2.

  17. This will probably benefit backup Ryan Fitzpatrick as well since he ran a lot of pistol in Chan Gailey’s offense the past two years.

  18. The Texans were running plays out of the pistol today as well. After practice the coaches said it wasn’t because of some change in their offense, but rather for the defense to practice going up against it.

  19. Why in the hell is everyone trying to give props to Shanahan and Robert Griffin for the Titans using a mobile quarterback ? … It sure seems like the Titans/Oilers had the bead on running quarterbacks even back when Mikey was patting Elway on the back… Lets take a look at 20 years of football in the Titans/Oilers – 1993 on – Warren Moon ( runner ) , Steve McNair, Vince Young…. Jake Locker …. hmmm, yep looks like the Redskins started this trend 20 years ago , my bad.

I believe Joe T was a mobile QB in 1982 plus he used to return punts and kickoffs, but that was before LT snapped his leg.
