49ers cornerback Chris Culliver suffers left knee injury

49ers cornerback Chris Culliver suffered a left knee injury Thursday and had to be taken off the field via cart, multiple media outlets reported.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, the injury occurred during a punt drill.

Culliver was “in tears” after the injury, per Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.

The 24-year-old Culliver is entering his third NFL season. He appeared in all 16 regular-season games in 2012, notching 47 tackles, defending 14 passes and hauling in two interceptions.

The 49ers have had a hard-luck offseason with injuries, with the loss of wide receiver Michael Crabtree (Achilles) the biggest setback to date. Also, star inside linebacker Patrick Willis recently suffered a broken hand.

All of a sudden, there are a lot of cracks in the 49ers armor.

Culliver is their nickle CB…in other words, he’s the cornerback that would cover Randle Cobb in the first game of the season.

Guess what Randle Cobb is thinking with Culliver not being in the game? Guess where Arron Rodgers is going to go now?

I see Mike Wilkening is posting this story. I read your articles on the now defunct Pro Football Weekly website. Glad to see to here on PFT.

If he was in tears over his knee, then it sounds like we’re talking another torn ACL.

Man, players are dropping like flies.

@realdealsteel – technically, in our nickel defense, Culliver and Brown are on the outside and Rogers shifts to the slot.

But yes, this hurts the Niners. He had a ghastly Superbowl performance but was solid during the regular season.

  10. goldrush36 says: Aug 1, 2013 4:21 PM

@realdealsteel yeah and it will be all for not when Kaepernick assaults that joke of a defense for 50+ points

    RIP

    Richard Sherman

  12. garyhd01 says: Aug 1, 2013 4:29 PM

niners should call their cb they tried to take 2 mil from and renegotiate a new deal if they don’t he will play out the season and they will lose him too. and if their slot cb does have an acl this becomes imperative in my mind at least

  13. jayniner says: Aug 1, 2013 4:31 PM

    Please let it be Sherman….

Profootball Weekly is now defunct in part because of “writers” like Mike Wilkening.

Niners are getting thin in a weak secondary.

Superbowl loss hangover! Losing a Superbowl can have disastrous effects on a franchise. The Steelers still haven’t recovered. My Raiders still haven’t bounced back.. That’s why I respect the 90’s Bills tremendously. Those cats were soldiers. No matter how many times they got beat down they kept climbing back to the mountain top to fight for the crown.

Is it necessary to say he was “in tears”?

  20. sikoix says: Aug 1, 2013 5:05 PM

You probably don’t need to point out he was “in tears” (to the journalist that did).

The Sacramento Bee reported that Chris Culliver was in tears as well. Why does that offend you so much ? It actually humanizes a story.

Would this have been better for you ?

    CULLIVER KNEE HURT.

Sorry to hear about all these injuries even though I’m a Ram’s fan. With that being said the gap between the Rams and Niners/Hawks is slowly closing IMO.

  23. eastkoast49er says: Aug 1, 2013 5:09 PM

Ok thank you @fearyaks for correcting @realdealsteel…

but @oreo51 what are you talking about? THIN? They returned all 5 corners plus brought in Nnamdi who will be productive and have 2 decent guys to put on practice squad if they clear waivers.

At Safety, they lost Goldson, but replaced him with Eric Reid who will be better eventually. He’s just a liability since he will have rookie ups & downs.

Please tell me how that’s THIN?

Things are not looking good for the 49ers so far this year. Secondary is looking weak if this is a season ending injury.

    ——————————————————-

Rams have no offense. None. Outside of an unproven Tavon Austion who is situational at best there is nothing else. However, very good defense.

    Still won’t be enough.

    Lots of karma.

  27. jt38 says: Aug 1, 2013 5:47 PM

We don’t need a nickel corner because QB’s can’t throw the ball with Justin and Aldon in their face!

  28. jayhawk777 says: Aug 1, 2013 5:48 PM

Yawn. Culliver isn’t that good, anyway. See Jacoby Jones SB TD making CC look like child’s play.

The 9ers secondary was already swiss cheese and it just turned into limburger.

Name 1 guy in the secondary that is adept at covering anyone?

Rogers? No. Brown? No Culliver? No Whitner? No. Rookie Reid based on LSU tape? No.

9er’s are in serious trouble against anyone with even a decent QB.

It’s a PASSING league and 9ers don’t have a secondary and WR. Hilarious!!!!!!

  31. goldrush36 says: Aug 1, 2013 6:52 PM

@jayhawk77 and how sad is it they ranked above the hawks in both categories? Passing offense and passing defense.. let that soak in a minute loudmouth

Sure about that? The Niner’s hardly boast a top notch offense themselves. Yes they have a great running game and O-line but the offense as a whole hardly strikes fear in opposing defenses.

So apparently neither Kaepernick nor Aldon Smith who were drafted in the same draft have played yet. Kendall Hunter was also in that draft. None of them have played a down yet.
