Greg Jennings tries to make nice with the Packers

Greg Jennings AP

Vikings wide receiver Greg Jennings made headlines before training camp with some interesting comments about former Packers teammate Aaron Rodgers in a profile in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

On Thursday, Jennings seemed to try to defuse the situation, praising Rodgers and his old club in remarks to reporters.

“Aaron’s a phenomenal quarterback,” Jennings said, per Mark Craig of the Star-Tribune. “He knows that. No one needs to tell him that. What he’s done over the course of the last five years? Phenomenal. He set the bar high for quarterbacks in this league. He set the bar high for offenses in this league.

“Everything I say is all out of fun. I’m just saying something just to say it. They know that’s not me.”

According to the Star-Tribune, Jennings said he hasn’t reached out to Rodgers to apologize.

“No. For what? I’m apologizing right now,” Jennings said, according to the paper, indicating his remarks would get to Rodgers via the media.

Jennings also indicated coach Leslie Frazier had talked to him about his previous comments about Green Bay.

“He said, ‘Keep it about our guys,’ ” Jennings said, according to the Star-Tribune. “Literally, that was it. I don’t really recall saying anything negative about Aaron or anyone over there, but, hey, I apologize.”

For the record, the Vikings face the Packers at Lambeau Field on November 24, and the reception Jennings receives will be fascinating.

You can practically smell the fear.

  2. jhein23 says: Aug 1, 2013 9:31 PM

Greg Jennings is going to the Vikings at about the same age Tory Holt went to the Jaguars. Not sure Jennings even puts up the numbers Holt did in Jacksonville.

Greg, stop talking about your old team and start worrying about your new team already.

This is all about big ratings. The nov 24 game will probably have pretty high ratings.

  5. sterlingrodgers says: Aug 1, 2013 9:34 PM

I thought Jennings comments about Rodgers were in somewhat poor taste, but in the big picture, Jennings is a pretty good guy in a league full of diva-WR’s. He has been a great player in this league- I think he’s on the downside of his career though.

  6. jimnsota says: Aug 1, 2013 9:34 PM

All I have to say is Jennings better watch out or Lacy might eat him.

  7. teal379 says: Aug 1, 2013 9:37 PM

Seems to be working on his back peddal…

  8. filthymcnasty1 says: Aug 1, 2013 9:37 PM

I don’t really blame Jennings for his outburst. Sooner or later the losing makes each of them snap.

Frazier was right to publicly humiliate Jennings. While it may cause an internal schism, the Vikings need to make sure they don’t rile up Rodgers, as he’s pretty much owned the Vikings over the past 3 years – beating them 6 times.

  9. evilfrasiercrane says: Aug 1, 2013 9:38 PM

I’m getting the impression that Jennings isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. Let me see, Rodgers made me what I am so now I’m going to bash him. Ya, real smart.

Translation: I didn’t have the stones or class to say what I said in the first place to Aaron’s face, and now when my head coach tells me to apologize and tries to get me to act classy, I still don’t have the stones to do the honorable thing and apologies to Aaron’s face.

    What a jerk.

  13. jwcarlson says: Aug 1, 2013 9:40 PM

Well, if history repeats itself, chances are Jennings won’t be playing that late into the season.

  14. creasy says: Aug 1, 2013 9:42 PM

When it was noted that Jennings had just referred to Rodgers by “Aaron,” Jennings asked: “Did I call him that? Oh, we’re talking about 12? Gotcha. No, he’s still 12. He’s still 12. I can’t give him that. He’s 12. He’s no longer the MVP. We have the MVP over here (running back Adrian Peterson).”

    Hahahahaha…let the backpedaling begin.

After careful consideration, Jennings realized it may have been a mistake to kick the hornets’ nest this early. Everyone knows the Packers are totally capable of beating Minnesota, even without the extra incentive (namely GJ’s big mouth).

Him and the Vikings truly deserve each other.

  32. publicteamforever says: Aug 1, 2013 10:25 PM

  38. acdc84 says: Aug 1, 2013 10:37 PM

Too little too late Greg. You’re not a GB legend like Favre so there’s not a ton of resentment or ill will or anything. You had some great years and played a key role in a SB championship, but u’ve been hurt lot and are clearly on the downslope, and you’re nowhere near as valuable as your new contract would infer. Best of wishes on ur 60 catch/700 yard/4 TD season (provided u stay mostly healthy), though to be fair those are pretty optimistic numbers considering ur not catching passes from Rodgers anymore. Far from it… You decided to chase the extra buck, and forego the opportunity to chase another championship catching passes from the guy that earned u that contract.

It’s a business, and there’s NOTHING wrong with signing for the max possible money, but I just don’t see the motivation for bashing the QB that had no small part in getting u ur numbers, and your money.

  39. jimmysee says: Aug 1, 2013 10:41 PM

Nothing like a week in Vikings training camp with ol’ Noodle Arm to make Rodgers look pretty good in that rear view mirror.

  40. packerswin96 says: Aug 1, 2013 10:43 PM

The reception he would have gotten would have been mostly a polite cheer for what he has done for the Packers, even tho he signed with one of our hated rivals, then he opened his mouth in a stupid way and now the reception he will get will be nothing but boos and jeers.

  41. packmangamble says: Aug 1, 2013 10:48 PM

Still he got a ring, Rodgers-Favre made him look pretty good, just shut your mouth and take your pay day. The fans realize you are pissed and feel the Packers under-valued your talent. If so go prove them wrong and lets see who made who. Hell for that matter just try to stay healthy for a whole season that would be a start.

If Jennings follows the advice of his coach and limits his future comments to his own teammates, that should be the last we hear from him this year.

What else can he say, Ponder throws like a girl? The offense consists of handing off to Peterson while Jennings runs decoy routes down field?

After three straight years of being in the playoffs and one of those years actually winning a Superbowl, I would be most interested in hearing from Jennings on his living room couch in January like the rest of us fans. First question, was the money worth missing the playoffs?

Rodgers is hyper sensitive. Jennings is just trying to put little thoughts into the guy’s head.

Notice in his “apology” that he says “Rodgers is a phenomenal QB and lifts the bar in the league”.

Jennings’ initial comments were about how everything is about Rodgers and that his head is so big it takes away from the team nature of the game. Now in his “apology” he gives glowing praise, further mocking the pedestal Rodgers sits upon.

Am I the only one that sees that? Jennings is just trollin’ his majesty A-rod is all.

I am okay if Greg Jennings has to say is something about Aaron Rodgers.

The reason is that with the number of lost to weapons for Rodgers this year and the lack of a great offensive line he may not be the in Rogers that we saw in 2011. Wife fear Aaron Rodgers getting motivated and annihilating the Vikings when there is less for him to have a field day with.

Everybody is so stuck in that year that he have not acknowledged his bad games of 2012.
