The Eagles would love to turn the page on the unexpected Riley Cooper debacle. But it won’t be that easy.
Every player on the team will have his own reaction to Cooper’s horribly stupid and racist comment. And not all players will keep their true views to themselves.
For example, running back LeSean McCoy said after Thursday’s practice, via Albert Breer of NFL Network, “I can’t respect a guy like that.”
Per Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com, McCoy said he wonders whether Cooper’s “true colors” came through in the moment captured by a hand-held phone’s video camera.
“I forgave Riley,” McCoy added, via Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. “It’s new. I hope it wears off. At this point, I speak for myself and other teammates, I know it’s different.”
It’s definitely different. And the Eagles definitely need everyone to process their feelings and focus on football as soon as possible.
That ultimately could be impossible. Like anything else, time will fade the initial reaction. Still, Cooper will always be the guy who said what he said. That won’t change for as long as he’s with the Eagles, or any NFL team.
