George Iloka listed as Bengals’ first-team strong safety

Marvin Lewis, George Iloka AP

The Bengals are listing second-year pro George Iloka as the first-team strong safety on their depth chart, Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com noted Friday.

Iloka, Taylor Mays and rookie Shawn Williams have all had chances to work with the first-team defense at strong safety early in camp, Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reported earlier this week.

For now, Mays is listed as the second-team strong safety behind Iloka, with Williams third-string.

Teams don’t always adhere to the depth charts they publicly release, but Iloka’s placement at the top of the strong safety list beats the alternatives. How he fares in preseason games figures to be key, and the same can be said for Mays, who’s in the final year of his deal and needs to play his best this summer. Williams, a third-round pick, figures to make the club no matter what happens, but it will be interesting to see how he progresses.

Good Iloka is big and fast and has a lot of potential had him in my top three safeties from the previous draft surprised he fell so far.

What a waste of a second rounder Mays turned out to be, Trent Baalke should’ve locked Mike Singeltary out of the draft room.

i like this, for me it comes down to iloka or williams, since williams is a rookie make him earn his playtime this year and i 100 percent believe williams is our future ss, but iloka was impressive in college and hopefully after his rookie season last year he learned and adjusted to the speed of the nfl, competition like this brings out the best, and as far as mays goes, he’s st’s all the way that’s it.

Taylor Mays hit like a runaway semi in college at USC, but he couldn’t cover a statue. A DB that can’t cover is sunk.

It seemed last season that all Taylor Mays wanted to do was hit like a semi. Problem was half the time it was his own guys. Then there’s the coverage thing…
