Negative predictions motivate Rex Ryan

Jets coach Rex Ryan knows most people don’t think his team is going to be very good this season. And he’s eager to prove most people wrong.

Asked if the media’s negative predictions for the season motivate him, Ryan acknowledged that he hears what people say and wants to make those people eat their words.

“You know what? If you’re a competitor how does that thing not get you? How does that not motivate you? It’s almost like, ‘Ok, well we’re going to show you.’ Of course, that’s your human nature,” Ryan said, in comments distributed by the team. “You’re going to get a group of 53 and how many coaches in the entire organization and saddle you with those types of things and not rally, if you will, behind it because we don’t believe those are true. It’s going to be proven out, it’ll be proven out when the season comes rolling around. We feel we will be much better than that.

Asked if he takes those predictions personally, Ryan said, “Of course. Absolutely. Everybody does. The entire organization.”

Ryan said that ultimately, predictions don’t matter because soon enough, the Jets will have a record to stand on.

“The one thing about the regular season you can’t hide from the fact that you are what you are and nobody runs from it,” Ryan said.

A rough year hasn’t diminished Ryan’s confidence.

  1. “Negative predictions motivate Rex Ryan”. Ok Rex, your team is bad and you are not a great coach. Just trying to help !

  2. WOW, if negative predictions motivates this guy, he has to be the most motivated coach in history!

  3. Santonio Holmes hurt. Ivory hurt. Goodson a no show. More importantly, if Sanchez is the starting QB, the losses will mount.

Get Geno Smith in there and you’ll have to deal with rookie growing pains. But at least it would be a learning year and a forward look to 2014.

Jets will be last in the AFC East and bottom 3 team this year in the NFL.

  4. By this time next year, Rex will be in the ESPN studios and Sanchez will be backing up Blaine Gabbert.

  5. Well the positive predictions he made didn’t help. Maybe negative ones are better to focus on.

  6. I don’t know how else he could have answered the question.

But I don’t think they are going to be any good either. LOL

  7. Well, there’s no evidence that the motivation has produced anything more than a gastric bypass and a foot fetish.

  8. When Geno and the Jets go 10-6 this season and make playoffs, everyone will talk about how Rex has changed and how he has become a decent head coach. Defensively, this team has a lot of talent and that will keep them in games, so Geno is the key and if he plays as he is capable the Jets will surprise a lot of people this year.

  9. Enough of the negativity.

I’m positive that Rex will not have to worry about the playoffs this year.

  10. Problem is, it needs to motivate his players! Coaches just coach but the players have to play!

  11. Negative predictions motivate Rex Ryan

They should. Afterall, we all know how well the self provided positive predictions of “We’re winning the Super Bowl” have worked out for them.

  12. He should ignore the negative predictions and let the negative results motivate him…just saying

“Can’t wait!”This team is going to surprise a LOT of people this year with how good they are.

WOW… reality is going to be a splash of cold water in your face. Delusional.

  14. As a Fins fan I really can’t comment too much on the Jets except to say that they might suck this year, they might be great, one never knows until the games are played, injuries etc. That being said it is amazing to me that Rex just can’t keep hid mouth shut and coach. with all the scrutiny in NY, and all the stupid stuff he as said/done in the past, SB guarantees, Hot Sauce comments, Foot fetishes, tatoos, Sanchez, Tebow experiment/disaster, butt fumbles, etc this guy just can’t shut up and coach. He is powerless over his own mouth. Go Fins!

  15. 69finfan: the dolphins are powerless over their own ineptitude.. LOL philbin..Jets own miami every year..1 and 15 not long ago and not far away..

YOU NEED A QUARTERBACK TO WIN. Simple as that.
    ————————————–

It’s not that simple. Good QB play is the result of a lot working parts performing at a high level.

Hall of Fame QBs can win despite sketchy coaching, but hall of fame QBs come along once or twice a generation not every draft class.

But basically you need good coaching and a good front office to win….. It’s as simple as that. It’s what Tom Cable failed to understand when he was here. All Pro QBs don’t come that way out the box. They have to be developed. Ask Andy Reid, Holmgren, Harbaugh. Martz, Joe Gibbs, and Al Saunders.

  17. teejayss;

You’re as delusional as your HC. You chased your longtime Superfan since 1975, Fireman Ed away last year. Even he couldn’t take being a Jests fan anymore.

  18. Yes, last year was frustrating. Sanchez played horrible and Rex didn’t know what to do. This is a different year and expectation’s are low. D will be better and Geno will bring a much needed spark to the offense!! Middle of the schedule is tough but if we can squeeze out 3 wins out of 7 tough games we could end up 9-7 and a wild card!! Just sayin!!

  19. Well Rex I’m the fiercest competitor that I ever met and negative comments or predictions don’t motivate me. I find that to be an unhealthy way to draw inspiration or motivation and if you haven’t been able to figure that out, then how are you motivating your players? I predict your team will lose horribly this year and I’m likely to think it’s your fault since it doesn’t sound like you understand how to coach up the team very well.
