Dallas Thomas gets an NFL education

Dolphins rookie Dallas Thomas has had a tough professional debut at left tackle. Thomas -- who’s listed as the Dolphins’ second-string left guard -- struggled both with speed and with power on the edge. In the third quarter, Cowboys veteran defensive end George Selvie bull-rushed Thomas, and down went the rookie as the old pro pass rusher sacked QB Pat Devlin.

It’s a nice highlight for Selvie. But it’s a better learning experience for Thomas, who got a look at left tackle once starter Jonathan Martin left the game.

Selvie is vying to make the Cowboys as a backup. He didn’t hurt his cause tonight, as we noted earlier. Thomas, though, is making the Dolphins -- he’s a third-round pick.

Tonight’s tape doesn’t flatter Thomas. But it’s just the first preseason game.

Think of all all he learned tonight.

We’ll be back at game’s end with some more observations from the NFL’s preseason opener.
