Bears list Kyle Long, James Brown as “co-starters” on depth chart

Bears first-round draft pick Kyle Long hasn’t quite earned the starting right guard job just yet.

The Bears have released the first depth chart of training camp, and at right guard there are “co-starters”: Long and James Brown.

Chicago won’t feel good if Brown is the starter at the beginning of the regular season, considering that the whole reason they got a brand new guard in the first round of the draft was to upgrade at the position over what they had last year, when Brown signed with the Bears as an undrafted free agent and ended up starting the final three games of the regular season.

The smart money is on Long ultimately earning the job and starting in Week One. But for now anyway, Brown still has a chance to beat Long out, perhaps by impressing the coaches as the hardest working man in camp.

I’ll be honest. I don’t care who wins this contest, so long as the line overall is a marked improvement this year over the horrid lines they’ve scraped up from who-knows-where the last few years.

The hardest workin’ man on the O-line….Yeeeeoooow!!!!

I’m just glad there is actually competition on the O-line this year.

Most Bears fans hope Brown AND Long win the starting guard spots and that Slausen is backup. Would be awesome to have two young guys to anchor the line for years

I have a gut feeling Kyle Long is going to be a beast — and I’m not a Bears fan.

Actually, Marc Trestman just fused the two players together, a trick he learned from his days coaching in the CFL. Teammates have him calling them/him “Jyles Longbrown”

Long does really look like a tough mother trucker, for sure. I want some MEANNESS on tis line. The days of J-Webb Nation “Aww shucks, guys” mentality needs to be over. That’s why I miss Kreutz (in his prime) so much. Nastiness is infective.

The idea is to get the best 5 out there as a unit. If Brown is good, maybe he will earn a spot on the left side beating out Matt Slauson. Or, Long will eventually earn a tackle spot. Either way, it’s a win win to have guys who can be versatile.

If Kyle plays with the same motor as his Dad Howie or brother Chris then Bears fans will be plenty pleased.

Papa’s got a brand new bust?

For the record, I watched Long at Oregon college, and think he’ll make a very solid pro for years to come, but it was low-hanging fruit and I just couldn’t resist.

    James brown -Right Guard
    Smokey -Center
    Marvin Gaye -Left Tackle
    David Ruffin -Left Guard
    Eddie Kendricks -Right Tackle

    Stevie Wonder -Offensive Coordinator

    And Diana Ross as Cheerleader

As bad as that line was lat year, it might not be a bad idea to start both guys at guard. Might as well try and double up as much O-Line as possible to give Cutler time to throw to Marshall.

Kyle Long will most likely get the starting RG job on opening day. But i miss not having Lance Louis at RG because last year he was doing good at RG. Could of been Bushrod, Long, Garza, Louis, Webb. #BearDown
