Mark Sanchez will start Jets’ preseason opener on Friday

AP

For at least one preseason game, Mark Sanchez is the Jets’ starting quarterback.

Jets coach Rex Ryan confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that Sanchez will be the starter when the Jets begin their preseason on Friday night against the Lions. Ryan added that Geno Smith will also get some playing time with the first-string offense.

The news that Sanchez is starting is no surprise, and it doesn’t mean he’s currently in the lead in his quarterback competition with Smith. It just means that not enough has changed so far in the offseason for Ryan to change the status quo, and Sanchez is the incumbent starter from last year.

In fact, many Jets observers think Smith is the favorite to be the starter when the regular season opens. If Sanchez doesn’t play well on Friday night, it’s entirely possible that the preseason opener against the Lions will be the last game he ever starts for the Jets.

  1. I honestly believe the only reason this can be happening is Rex trying to keep his job. Sanchez is a known quantity… known to be bad, yes, but at least they have seen what he does.

  2. It could also mean that Sanchez is the best QB on the roster and will be starting come opening day. They are both poor options for a team who wants to make the playoffs.

  3. Seriously, I’m hoping for a Christmas miracle in that he tears it up. Jets’ fans are begging for a reason to put a tidy bow on the Sanchez era. They wouldn’t know what to do with themselves if he went 10-12 for 175 and 3 tds real quick. It would be rather comical.

    If only………..

  6. footballfan58: let me guess: youre a fan of no team but walk around joining bandwagons if the winning teams each week, right? then when someone calls u out u say” im a football fan”..LOL

  7. Once the Jets eventually pull the trigger and go to Geno Smith. There is no turning back barring injury.

The best way to handle this is to have Sanchez lose the job. Once Geno gets the gig, It’s his job no matter how up and down or poorly he plays. You have to ride it out with the rookie.

Smart move on Rex’s part. Keep the competition going. If Mark wants to be the starter. He has to earn it. If by chance, he wins the job. Wins and losses and his production or lack thereof will determine how long he keeps the job. The door is going to eventually close on Mark Sanchez’s career as an NFL starter. It’s only a matter of when.

  8. Rex probably saw the kids arm and figured if he started Sanchez the kid would stay hungry and win the job. Rex is out for Rex now. That being said either QB and with little to no weapons I think will be more exciting on O because of the O coordinator. Shotty was conservative and Sparano is one reason Mike T doesn’t have a job any more. Of course we are still 6-10 team this year. Maybe 9-6 on a roundhouse swing that lands. LOL!!!

Playoffs? playoffs? Who said something about playoffs?
Not.in.the.future. 4-12 sounds about right to me.

  10. It’s a competition. I think in the end it may be better to start Sanchez. Yeah I said it. I don’t think it’s smart to toss the kid in yet he doesn’t really have a workhorse back or many dependable targets. He may learn from being thrown to the fire but that’s a lot to put on the kid this early. I think Geno will start before the seasons over but for now it may not be a good idea. As much as I hate the Jets I actually feel bad for Geno.

  11. If that is so the JETS will be sorry Mark is the best Quarterback in camp how many more are you guys going to jump on the Geno wagon Ill stay on the Mark train it’s faster and makes more sence

Does anyone want to bet mark Sanchez has a longer career than rg3?

    Thumbs up yes

    Thumbs down no

^^^^How the hell does RG3 get mentioned with Sanchez this don’t have NOTHING to do with RG3, he’ s not in a QB battle, com’ on man!!

  13. Well, if we’re trying to read some sense into mis-spellings, we can agree that Mark makes way more cents than he should.

You are completely wrong – this has nothing to do with RG3 at all. Quit bringing him into this.

  15. Well, there could be a good chance that the Lions D-line may make the choice for the Jets as to who will start this year. Could be season over for Sanchez.

  16. Probably doesn’t mean a whole lot. I mean, they both can’t jog out for the first series.

Ummm ……….no. I’m a loyal Patriots fan of more than 40 years. If you’ve ever read my comments before you’d know that. It’s never been any secret.

And I’m still happy that Sanchez is your QB!

  18. Giants/Broncos on CBS week 2, if they don’t have this thing figured out, someone on 65 street might get just arrested.

My ears hurt. This DOESN’T have ANYTHING to do with RG3.

  20. Whoever starts the THIRD preseason game is all that matters. Please return to your homes. There’s nothing more here to see…
