McCarthy hasn’t closed door on Bulaga, yet

McCarthy AP

Packers doctors have determined that left tackle Bryan Bulaga has a torn ACL in his knee.  But Bulaga has sought a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews.  Until it comes, coach Mike McCarthy isn’t ready to assume Bulaga is done for the year.

We’re still waiting on a medical opinion,” McCarthy told reporters on Tuesday, via Vic Ketchman of the team’s official website.  “Bryan is still hopeful of giving it a go. Nothing has been finalized.  He doesn’t even look like he’s injured.”

Usually, the second opinion is used by the player to protect him from being exposed to harm by a team that wants to see its players play.  In this case, Bulaga seems to be looking for a conclusion that the injury, whatever it is, will allow him to play.

In that picture it looks like McCarthy’s gut alone could play let tackle.

Ted Thompson has built one heck of a roster for the team to even consider letting its best tackle lope around all year on a bum knee. Desperate?

  9. thestrategyexpert says: Aug 6, 2013 2:08 PM

Then why would the Packers have “confirmed” it was a season-ending injury. They already did that according to reports unless the reports are wrong. Who was the spokesman from the team that confirmed this and what exactly did they say word for word. It needs to be examined and scrutinized if it’s inconsistent with what the message is today. Even in the previous story where they “confirmed” the season must be over they already were seeking the opinion from Andrews, so if that wasn’t good enough the other day to hold off on the “confirming”, then why is it relevant now?

Sounds like somebody from the Packers confirmed too soon and should get out of the confirming business.

It’s always a good idea to get a second opinion on an injury. Especially when the first opinion came from Packer doctors.

  17. Rick Spielman is a Magician says: Aug 6, 2013 2:26 PM

And you thought Adrian Peterson made a miraculous recovery from a torn ACL. Bulaga will be back on the field tomorrow.

  18. thestrategyexpert says: Aug 6, 2013 2:28 PM

    themagicfanguy:

That’s not what the reports said. A lot of places reported more than just the fact that he tore his ACL, there were qualifiers included in those testaments. One report even claims that the Packers themselves diagnosed the injury, and that the injury was a season-ending ACL injury.

Just type in “Packers diagnose” on Google and the first thing that comes up looks like a really bogus article from Yahoo News.

I love the responses from the Packers haters on these threads. You people are so jealous that your team is not good enough to over-take GB in the North, that you post the stupidest stuff hoping it will be true or whatever. Listen, the Packers are the best team in the NFC North until your teams get better. That is all there is to it. Some day the Packers may lose talent enough to be a 2nd place team in the division, until then, just admit that they are better than your team and take your lumps on sundays.

He injured his knee on the first series. He played 30 snaps in the scrimmage.

Fact: Your team announced it’s an ACL tear.
Fact: Only one person has played successfully through an ACL tear an entire season, that is not the norm.

The odds, second opinion or not, are against Bulaga here. Sorry.

  42. Bluestree says: Aug 6, 2013 3:51 PM

In camp so far, David Bakhtiari is looking like he might be a better left tackle than Bulaga. He’s longer and more athletic. And he’s nasty. This could turn out to be a blessing in diguise.

  44. themostlogicalofvoices says: Aug 6, 2013 3:58 PM

I played football and basketball in high school against a kid that tore his ACL during his senior year. Because of the way it tore, not sure if it was complete or partial, he was able to continue playing with a knee brace keeping it togther. Two years later, same thing happened to a friend of mine. He also played a season of football and a season of basketball with a knee brace. I’m not saying that high school sports are the equivalent of professional football but from what I’ve seen the precedent is there to play on an injured knee. As others have stated, he injured the knee early in the scrimmage and continued to play. If there is a position on offense or defense where you could play with an injured knee it seems like it would be offensive line where there aren’t as many hard cuts

  45. boothlustig says: Aug 6, 2013 4:03 PM

I think the Packers simply want to cut Bulaga in camp rather than to IR him. Why? To free up cap space and allow Minn to pick him up. And then both Bulaga and Jennings can get into Ponder’s head with coaching points after each incompletion. Reading between the lines, that is what is really going on here.

  46. thestrategyexpert says: Aug 6, 2013 4:17 PM

    pathsovglory:

Perhaps so. But this isn’t about what medical reasons would say, it’s about what the Packers say. And the reports said the Packers confirmed he was out. Even if nobody has ever recovered in time from an injury like this before, then there’s still a first time for everything and medical reasons can’t promise that Bulaga can’t be that first success case.

Also, a lot of teams shut down players for a season to keep that roster spot open, but an important guy like this could be shelved without going on IR just in case they want to use him only in the playoffs. Why can’t he get healthy just for the Super Bowl if Green Bay chooses to leave that spot open the entire time?

Statistically speaking, after Green Bay lost Brian last year, they gave up fewer sacks and averaged more yards rushing.

Might be because they benched Saturday about the same time or maybe not.

Will say this tho – in camp Bahktiari is 5-0 in one on one’s at LT with several of those wins coming against pass rush by Clay Mathews. Even the most myopic hater of all things Green Bay would have to say that Clay Mathews is a good pass rusher and for a rookie to handle that – shows good things.

I’m not worried about the GB injuries. 10 days into camp, you are going to get them… It happens every year to almost every team. Some are high profiled players, and some are not. You rather get the injuries early, cause by Nov. you want those players that are filling in, to have that much more experience…. 6 months from now, during GB’s playoff run, this will all be forgotten about….

You are right, we weren’t the spoilers though. We earned our way into the playoffs – which is what you and most of your fans thought couldn’t happen.

The Vikings beat the 9er’s at home.

Glad to see you have so much faith in your team that you don’t think you could have beat them in Lambeau.

Peterson and the Vikings were more concerned about winning the game and making the playoffs than setting a record.

Peterson didn’t get the single season rushing record, but he got the NFL MVP and Comeback Player of the Year awards.

It would have been nice to add that record to AP’s single game rushing record (he had 48 more yards than Dickerson in that category), but who cares.
