Report: Reese hopeful Pierre-Paul can play in Week One

The Giants begin the 2013 regular season at division rival Dallas on Sept. 8, and would it ever be ideal if star defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had recovered from back surgery enough to help New York generate the pass rush pressure it will need against Tony Romo and Co.

In perhaps a show of confidence in Pierre-Paul’s recovery, Giants G.M. Jerry Reese suggested Tuesday morning in an interview with WFAN-AM in New York that the fourth-year defensive end could be ready for Week One, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.

However, Pierre-Paul, in an interview with reporters on Tuesday, didn’t say for certain that he would play in Week One.

Asked if it was “important” for him to play in Week One, Pierre-Paul said: “No, it’s not important to me at all. I already know that the D-line that we have here is going to go out and get the job done.”

He added, “They don’t really need me out there right now.  . . . I’m just going to focus on my recovery. Everything will be all right.”

Pierre-Paul also noted that his recovery is going “perfectly fine.” He also indicated that the call to return would be his, and that he did not want to rush his recovery.

With 33 days until the opener, making a definitive statement on whether Pierre-Paul will be on the field at Dallas is a tough call, perhaps one that can’t be made, really. This is much is certain: the Giants could use Pierre-Paul in Week One, but they also need him healthy over the long term.

Bubble wrap him until he is 100%. If that means week 8, I’m cool with it.

Giants d-line will reek havoc either way just like JPP said.

Wow. If a Jets player were to boldly state that it was his call when he returned to the playing field, we’d have big, bold headlines for a week.

Worried about the Giant D-line this year. JPP coming off back surgery and not recovering properly, Tuck coming off 2 years of sub-par play and only getting older, and 2 ex-Eagles castoffs that should be sponsoring Gerital (and 1 with a hole in his head). Don’t even get me started on the linebackers and the secondary. At least we have Eli, providing his arm doesn’t get ‘tired’ again this year. GO ELI; in NY you’re a god.
