Cam Newton: QBs are leaders whether we want to be or not

Cam Newton AP

No one has ever questioned Panthers quarterback Cam Newton’s talent, but some people have questioned Cam Newton’s leadership. Newton wants those people to know he’s well aware of the importance of that aspect of playing quarterback.

Newton, who has said he wants to be a team captain, also says that whether he has a “C” on his jersey or not, the “QB” by his name on the roster means that he has a leadership role in Carolina.

“I play a position that, by default, you’re a leader whether you want to be or not,” Newton told the Charlotte Observer. “You look at the quarterback position all the way back to rec ball. Guys know that that’s the leader. You’re automatically the person to flip the coin or answer the questions to the referee. It’s not something that I’ve done anything different, it just comes with the territory.”

Heading into his third season as the Panthers’ quarterback, Carolina needs Newton to be ready to lead.

He may be well aware but it comes off as he doesn’t want the responsibility.

    Wow, Cam, how insightful.

I hope Newton has a great year…but if his team is getting blown out and he scores a touchdown, please do not pretend to rip off your jersey like Superman.

  5. hrmlss says: Aug 7, 2013 1:54 PM

    Glad he’s not my QB.

  6. clowntown1 says: Aug 7, 2013 1:55 PM

the ‘C’ stands for Captain Obvious.

    What a scoop!!

Can’t lead from underneath your towel.

  8. blacknole08 says: Aug 7, 2013 1:56 PM

I certainly hope so Cam. Talk is cheap so speak with your actions.

Panthers fans are growing impatient and need to see some maturity growth especially from you. This means less pouting and less Superman celebrations when we are still down by 25+ points. Then and only then should you get a “C” on your jersey.

Punk must of been looking at some old NFL Films and then it dawn on him how he should act. What a Loser a one year wonder 2 years ago.!!!!

  12. chc4 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:06 PM

It’s seemingly innocuous comments like these that really show you what someone’s really thinking. Cam wants to get all the glory when things go well but run away and hide when they don’t.

  13. smjones5984 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:11 PM

It’s about the time of the year for all the Cam haters to troll on this site. He’s the best QB in the 2011 draft class, and will win a Superbowl before Luck, Griffin, and Wilson.

    Suck on that, haters.

  15. stickyicky97 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:18 PM

@larrydavid7000 Cam has had the best first two years of any QB in NFL history, so how can he be a “one year wonder”? Haters will continue to hate.

  16. thestrategyexpert says: Aug 7, 2013 2:18 PM

Well good luck to Cam this year, may your coin flipping be prosperous this season and I hope you ace the test with the referees.

  17. thenew013 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:20 PM

He is extremely emotional about his play and his teams performance. If he can turn the pouting into motivation to be better his potential has no ceiling. He is already good just needs to do the little things to become great.

Cam, you’re on Steve Smith’s team, remember that!!

  22. 12444uggg says: Aug 7, 2013 2:42 PM

Cam is close to being behind the curve all ready, getting out of the NFC South is going to be difficult with the Falcons and Saints both poised to make the playoffs this year. His comments suggest that he’s not comfortable with a leadership roll, it’s just something he has to deal with. I would like to hear the comment in context though. Luck, Wilson, RG3, Kaep are all further ahead and have played in the playoffs. It’s not for lack of talent, but there’s something about Cam that doesn’t suggest to me “winner”. Sorry, Hate away.

  23. chargerdillon says: Aug 7, 2013 2:43 PM

Leaders don’t steal other peoples PC’s in the Pros nor in College.

Leaders don’t wear their emotions on their sleeve like a little baby in front of the camera.

Leaders hold themselves accountable for their actions.

Robert Griffin, Michael Vick, Collin Kaeparnick, Cam Newton.

3 of these mobile quarterbacks act like leaders, the other is named Cam Newton.

  24. cardiaccatsbackin2013 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:44 PM

@blacknole08 – You say Cam does his Superman TD celebration as if it happens all the time and his team is ALWAYS down by 25+ points … but if I remember correctly in 2012, seven of the nine losses Carolina had were by one touchdown or less. Please explain. Oh wait, you can’t, because you’re nitpicking and hating for the sake of hating.

The fact is, with a lackluster supporting cast, Newton has thrown for almost 8,000 Yards, 40 TDs, 29 INTs (not all of them his fault, mind you … remember the Chicago game when Steve Smith slipped on his route as Cam threw the ball?) … He’s also accounted for 22 Rushing TDs more than 1,400 rushing yards. Like it or not, he’s producing, and if the team had a better defense and one more offensive playmaker, he’d be a playoff QB.

I’m an Alabama fan and even I can turn off the blinders and see Cam for the talent he has and what he’s capable of accomplishing …

  25. stickyicky97 says: Aug 7, 2013 3:03 PM

Look, I am one of Cam’s biggest critics, but these people that think they know Cam, this team, and all the dynamics, are fools. Cam is a polarizing player and stirs a lot of emotions, therefore, critics want to be loud and over-critical of him, while fans tend to give a little too much praise. It’s evident he has huge potential and play-making ability, but it’s also true he needs some humility and maturation. This year will be the tell-all year when we find out.

  26. patriots420 says: Aug 7, 2013 3:09 PM

I see a breakout year for Cam, he really needs some weapons tho, dude is legit. Coming from an outsider looking in.

I’m not sure if Rivera is the guy for Carolina in the long haul but if they can get a good leader of the franchise ala Payton, BB, Coughlin, they are set with Cam good passer with a big arm, great mobility and a big TE like frame to take a little punishment. I think the leadership will come on in the next year or two.

  27. locutus says: Aug 7, 2013 3:13 PM

I think this kid will be pretty damn good if he matures a bit. He tries and means well but still wet behind the ears.

  28. cardiaccatsbackin2013 says: Aug 7, 2013 3:26 PM

I think we’ll know Week 1 when Carolina pulls off the upset against Seattle. No Harvin, No Irvin, Russell Wilson playing on the road. Winning the home opener will set the tone for a potential 4-0 start for Carolina.

Just so you know, Blacknole08 is a Panthers fan and in my book one of the best , most fair and unbiased posters on this site. He’s far from “hating” on Newton. In the game to which he refers against the Giants, I believe Car was down by double digits late in the game. Regardless, doing any individual celebration when you are losing is lame, and even lamer if you are supposed to be a leader as Newton acknowledges that he is by the nature of his position.

Sometimes Newton handles things the wrong way but usually his comments are ones that should make Panthers fans hopeful because they show accountability on his part. He just has to back that up with his actions.

Cam is third best in that draft. Dalton is only QB in nfl history to have 20 tds and reach playoffs first two years then you have keapernick.

@chargerdillon Leaders don’t wear a Dolphins hat out to the club … (Kaepernick)

Leaders don’t murder dogs and orchestrate a multi-state dogfighting racket … (Vick)

As for RGIII, I have a lot of respect for his abilities. I just hope he isn’t injury prone.

  37. robinjoes says: Aug 7, 2013 9:27 PM

75% of the negative comments about Cam are in direct relation with the primetime blowout loss to the Giants last year. Most people have only seen him on the few nationaly televised games and what they see on espn.
Cmon people……come up with some new material, be original!
The good far outweighs the bad with Cam in his first 2 years in the NFL. All signs point to him maturing in those 2 years, not struggling with identifying or correcting mistakes.
If this team stays healthy, they will contend for the division crown at the end of the year.

I can’t tell if that’s sarcasm or just homer delusion? Seahawks will be stomping Carolina in week 1 and everyone nationally knows it. No Harvin, No Irvin, No Problem.

  45. jgedgar70 says: Aug 12, 2013 11:25 AM

Here we go again…Cam got caught with a stolen laptop in 2008. Therefore, he is a lifetime criminal. We must always hate lifetime criminals. Never mind that he has never been afoul of the law since then.

Cam’s father – NOT CAM – asked for cash in exchange for Cam’s signature on a letter of intent. Therefore, every college game Cam ever played, he only played it because somebody gave him money; he is a lifetime cheater. We must always hate lifetime cheaters. Never mind that the NCAA stated on 3 separate occasions that Cam did nothing wrong.

When Cam struggles early, he puts a towel over his head and sits alone. Therefore, he is a lifetime “me first, me only” player. Never mind that he spends the entire first preseason game running up and down the sidelines cheering his teammates on.

This stuff is old. People, please move on to something new.

  46. cardiaccatsbackin2013 says: Aug 12, 2013 4:06 PM

@anygivensundayfan It’s a legitimate statement. Last year’s game AT Seattle, the Panthers were a Ben Hartsock catch away from winning that game. Outside of Harvin, what did Seattle do to improve their team? Cliff Avril might help make up for not having Bruce Irvin Week 1, but AGAIN how does Russell Wilson play ON THE ROAD? Not good.

I think the improvements Carolina made to their front seven on D is going to show up early in that game. The Panthers first and second team D played very well Friday night. Don’t sleep on them, because it’s not a “gimme victory” for Seattle right out the gate. If they win, then they earned it (or had the refs somehow give it to them) … Funny how if it wasn’t for the “Fail Mary” Seattle may not have even made the playoffs.

  47. jgedgar70 says: Aug 12, 2013 5:56 PM

cardiaccatsbackin2013 – not to rain on your parade, but last year’s Panthers-Seahawks game was in Charlotte. But yes, we easily could have won. Actually, from an offensive standpoint, the game was pretty disgusting for both teams.

I have no worries about Cam, or the offense. If we get any decent play out of the secondary, we will make the playoffs.
