Jennings says there’s “brainwashing” in Green Bay

Jennings AP

Well, at least Vikings receiver Greg Jennings won’t have to apologize to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.  Again.

This time, Jennings used a broader brush to explain the prevailing mindset in and around the only other NFL team for which he played.

“When I came over here, I was kind of brainwashed,” Jennings told Paul Allen and Ben Leber of KFAN radio.  “There’s no ‘kind of’ to it.  Being over in Green Bay, you’re brainwashed to think anyone in the division is tiers below.  And so coming over here I meet the people within the organization and I’m like, ‘Wow, these are really great people.’

‘It’s like everything that you know in Green Bay is like the best, the best, the best, the best, the best,” Jennings said.  “And it’s like total brainwashing.  And I think you don’t open your eyes to see what other teams have to offer unless you are in that position.”

Apparently, Jennings’ recent brainwashing from Vikings coach Leslie Frazier didn’t take.  Frazier may have to try it again.

If he couldn’t have figured that out on his own while still in Green Bay, then yes, he must have been braindead….errr… I mean brainwashed.

  2. kotcha23 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:13 PM

This guy needs to zip it already and it’s week 1 of preseason…Talk about burning bridges.

  3. buckethead1 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:14 PM

They brainwashed him to sound like an idiot after leaving the organization…brilliant

  4. expertop says: Aug 7, 2013 2:14 PM

Umm, I’m pretty sure your coach told you to quit talking about the Packers. What is wrong with you?

“It’s like everything that you know in Green Bay is like the best, the best, the best, the best, the best”

Maybe because they’re the best in the division?

  6. unbiasfan says: Aug 7, 2013 2:15 PM

Ted Thompson & Mike McCarthy run a dictatorship over at Green Bay, they brainwash all the fans and make it seem like they are historic and great franchise when really they are just an overrated, over-controlled organization that’s run with no class

  7. joshmac982 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:16 PM

I’m not a fan of either team, but Jennings is starting to sound like a broken hearted person who can’t stop talking about his ex.

  8. smjones5984 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:16 PM

That brainwashing is Green Bay winning all the time, unlike the rest of the NFC North.

  9. gbp567 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:16 PM

Greg, get over it! The Packers didn’t want you and no amount of venom thrown their way will change what happened. You cannot seem to come to grips with your age, declining skills and propensity for injury. Move on already, you are acting like a scorned Fifth Grader.

  10. bigj7769 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:17 PM

Green Bay is tiers above other teams. Ur supposed to act that way towards other teams. Jennings is just upset because he was let go. GET OVER IT.

  11. wipackman1265 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:17 PM

Note: in order to be brainwashed you need to have a brain…which clearly Greg Jennings does not…. Can’t wait for you to get DRILLED in your first game against GB…… If you even make it that far

  12. caspius1 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:17 PM

Umm hate to break it to you. But all teams are going to say they are the best. It is up to you to buy in or not.

  14. firestarter0728 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:18 PM

It’s looking more like he never had a brain that required washing to begin with.

  15. stillersfan says: Aug 7, 2013 2:18 PM

Somebody needs to put a muzzle on this dude. Who cares if Green Bay made you think they were better than the other teams in their division…isn’t that what a good team does?

  16. donmega72 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:18 PM

This guy needs to move on and just be quiet. I predict that he’ll be throwing Ponder under the bus by week 4.

  17. brobokil says: Aug 7, 2013 2:18 PM

Cmon Greg, why do you keep talking about your past team? Vikings fans are happy you’re here, but we don’t need to hear smack talk to like you.

Be above that yo! Show em what you’re missing with your play. The humble player is always to most respected.

  18. muskyhunter2542 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:19 PM

Well thats how you become the best… It to think your the best. That is why the Viking can never get over the hump. Because they only think that they are 2nd tear.
    WOW, what a dumb statement!!!

  19. packerbackernj says: Aug 7, 2013 2:19 PM

  20. starvingardens says: Aug 7, 2013 2:19 PM

C’mon Greg… what else would you expect from a team that won multiple Superbowls?!

Green Bay sucks… I mean sucks… I mean really really suck???

That’s what you want to hear from a franchise.

I’m a 49er fan and I still expected to say they were the best or at least tried to be.

That’s called setting the bar man.

  21. suicidalionsfan says: Aug 7, 2013 2:20 PM

and there’s something WRONG with having that mindset ?

  22. clowntown1 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:21 PM

brainwashing can only be done to weak minds sooo…….

but in all seriousness lets take a look at the record

    Packers 4 SuperBowls
    Bears 1 SuperBowl
    Lions 0 SuperBowls
    Vikings 0 SuperBowls

Yes…everyone in the division is tiers below. What is the issue?

  23. thegoodfight12 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:21 PM

Yes the countless division wins and division titles the past few years are brainwashing. It was all made up just to make the Packers seem good. Little known fact: the Packers actually went 3-13 last year. They just brainwashed everyone into thinking they won the division. I think someone is a tad bitter…

  24. ososrule says: Aug 7, 2013 2:21 PM

  40. chalkruz1989 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:26 PM

When a player departs from an organization, is it mandatory to talk badly about their former employer?

Greg Jennings should be thankful for his time with Green Bay. Because of the offense and stellar quarterbacks and coaching staff, he became an elite wide receiver. Yes, he obviously deserves credit as well.

His comments towards his former team is getting to be a bit much. Move on, you’re starting to sound like a jealous ex-girlfriend.

  48. somekat says: Aug 7, 2013 2:29 PM

To me, I don’t see the problem with this particular comment. It’s not worded very well, but he’s basically saying “the people here are much brighter, and the organization is run much better, than I believed when I was in GB”. The general idea seems like more of a compliment to Minny than a shot at GB

Talking about brainwashing kind of goes off the rails, but this guy isn’t exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer.

“My former employer used to tell me how great it was for us all to be working there, how weird is that???” – Greg Jennings

  50. vikingsfan4life says: Aug 7, 2013 2:30 PM

It’s funny to read all the Packer fans show their usual hatred for anyone who dares leave the team in free agency. Jennings had many great years playing for GB and may well have success in MN as well. If Jennings truly was as boneheaded, injury prone, over-the-hill, and nonessential as Packer fans think, then why did Thompson offer Jennings $10 million a year to stay? He’d sure look good in a Packer uniform now, especially with the injuries to the remaining Packer WRs. #GetOverIt

  51. mogogo1 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:31 PM

Unlike every other team, where coaches and GMs tell players how the home team stinks and all the opponents are awesome?

  52. nyfcat says: Aug 7, 2013 2:32 PM

The Packers have the audacity to drill it into their players that they are the best in the division, which is then backed up by perennially winning the division.

Yeah, what a mess GB is. Shut this idiot up.

  53. jimmyt says: Aug 7, 2013 2:33 PM

The Packers and their fans have a legacy. They through one of the greatest, most exciting QBs to ever play the game under the bus when he should have been allowed a year or two to retire a Packer. Instead he was mocked and ridiculed by a classless fan base. Sad really. I’ll never root for them again.

I guess if anything, he’s a great example to everyone to leave the past in the past. I hope he grows up and starts to represent the Vikings professionally or maybe he’ll be with the Lions next taking shots at us.

What this all sounds like to me is a guy who made a big mistake and doesn’t want to deal with the reality of the situation, so he’s desperately trying to justify himself, TO himself. It actually is a sad thing to witness. He’s gone from being a valued member of one of the most respected franchises in pro sports to a sideshow in one of it’s least. Not only that, but if he’d taken Green Bay’s original extension offer prior to last season, he’d be making more money than he is now.

Vikes fan, and Greg, most Vikings fans have known this for quite a while. Their fans are brainwashed as much as the team is. It’s like a big, arrogant fairy tale to them in the sense that they feel their team is better no matter what, and NEVER do any Packer fans disagree with management while they continue to be a mediocre team with one of the best QBs of all time. This year is just another year wasted of Aaron Rodgers due to horrible oline and horrific defense. While I can’t disagree with the super bowl rings, the fact is the Vikings have hisorically owned the NFC Central/North (18 div. titles, 9 wc births compared to 12 div. titles and 6 wc births for the packers). There will be packer fans who will look that up and still argue that it’s not true.

  73. favreblows says: Aug 7, 2013 2:43 PM

Jennings has really lost it. How can he even compare a crappy franchise like the Vikings to GB? They can’t win a SB. They have a history of embarrassing their fans….Loveboat scandal….Whizzanator….Randy Moss mooning…..signing rapists after they get out of prison. GB on the other hand is TitleTown. They have been the cream of the division since ’92. They have the best stadium in the league….and a waiting list for season tickets that is endless.

Ohhhh and now the Vikings owner was found to have cheated his business partners out of $50M. The judge said Zygi showed bad faith and evil motive. What a criminal. Talk about a match made in heaven!

So Greg…..when GB talks about how they are the best….just remember this…..they are a hell of a lot better than MN. Good luck with Ponder!!!! LMAO!!

  74. bucketman9 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:43 PM

Enough is enough, we realize your a Viking now! Doesn’t he realize how much Aaron Rodgers and that whole Green Bay Packer Organization has done for his career. Pretty sure they had a big part of him getting that big contract. As a Packer fan, I used to respect and admire Greg Jennings, but now, not so much. He will surely find out how good 12 and the Packers are soon enough.

  75. Luke says: Aug 7, 2013 2:46 PM

The Packers are 25-7 in against NFC North opponents since the 2008 season. Plus, they won a Super Bowl during that time period.

But yes, it’s total brainwashing to say the Packers are better than the rest of the division.

  76. vikingsvoice says: Aug 7, 2013 2:46 PM

  77. mrgreenbird says: Aug 7, 2013 2:46 PM

Hey Greg ~ to avoid looking (more) like a tool learn your division’s history before crying into a microphone.

In your lifetime (’83) the division has been won by:
    Chicago – 10 times
    Green Bay – 9 times
    Minn. – 7 times
    Detroit – 3 times

In the last 20 years the division has been won by:
    Green Bay – 9 times
    Minn. – 5 times
    Chicago – 4 times and
Detroit – 1 time (Tampa won in ’99)

Since the NFC North began in ’02 the division has been won by:
    Green Bay – 6 times
    Chicago – 3 times
    Minnesota – 2 times

Any round table discussion with kids (It’s Not Complicated) they’ll tell you that Minnesota IS NOT the best organization in the NFC North.

  79. bennyb82 says: Aug 7, 2013 2:48 PM

Jennings should really not talk until he plays for Minnesota. The odds of Jennings putting up the numbers he had with the Packers are probably slim. There are too many factors against him. Ponder is not elite. Peterson will get the ball way more than any RB in GB ever got the ball. I hope he has a great year, but he could be done bashing GB and instead reminiscing around halfway through the season.

I’m an NFC west guy, but what do these stats mean exactly? I want to see two things. NFL Championships and record head to head. Even though I hate the Vikes, Frazier is a solid dude and I’m sure he is seething to hear GJ talk more about his former team than he is about his current team.

What is it with this Packer fetish?

Nobody forced you to sign with the Vikes – but you did – so just go play football for them now. The Packers plucked you out of a little college in Michigan, made you a millionaire, and got you a Super Bowl ring.

You turned down an eleven million dollar offer from the Pack because you wanted MORE … and after it dawned on you that there weren’t going to be any takers, and the Packers withdrew their offer, you signed with the purple for less.

Okay, so you were brain-washed – but you brain-washed yourself into thinking you were this stud receiver that apparently nobody else did. Now take your nice clean brain, put a purple helmet on it, and go play football for Minnesota – and just pray you don’t stink.

You were okay in Green Bay, but you’re gone now, and we really don’t miss you that much – we’ve got our team and you’ve got yours. The best way to endear yourself to your new fan base is to play good football – if you’re still capable of it …

True, the local wankers will love you for taking shots at the Pack … but leave that little activity to both fan bases, shut up, and see if you can manage to drag your fat wallet over to Gopher Hole Stadium and just do your damn job.

Fear not, we will boo your ass into the next county when you next step onto the Lambeau turf … but you shouldn’t be thinking about that EVERY DAY!

The Packers and their fans have a legacy. They through one of the greatest, most exciting QBs to ever play the game under the bus when he should have been allowed a year or two to retire a Packer. Instead he was mocked and ridiculed by a classless fan base. Sad really. I’ll never root for them again.
    _________
The sad part is what you consider passing for grammar. The Packers come first above any one player. Jennings is still mad he was let go by the Packers. Have fun getting less money than GB originally offered (went down when Cobb was just as good) and playing for a team that has NO shot at winning the division let alone a Superbowl. Jennings realizes he is soon to be forgotten by football forever. Most people can name Adrian Peterson and that is it. That is their only player worth knowing.

Chicago only challenges every 20 years, and the Lions run around in the powder blue unies. Desmond Bishop when asked about Green Bay angrily asks to not be asked about it again. We’ve had 3 players now (favre & those 2) who’ve come from GB and don’t follow “it’s a business” line. There’s something going on in GB that’s going to break.

There’s a saying in the salary cap era of pro football that it’s smart to let a player walk a year too early than keep him around a year too late..the Packers never ever were going to sign Jennings to the big dollar multi year contract the Vikes did because he had become a bit injury prone and they had someone better and younger than him to play the slot receiver in Cobb. Instead of trying so desperately to endear himself to Vikings fans by trashing Rodgers and the Packers organization I’d like to personally tell him what most Vikings fans REALLY want him to do…stay healthy and play like the #1 receiver they are paying him big bucks to be. If he gets hurt again like he was the last 2 years in GB all the trash talking in the world won’t stop him from being booed and they will be the ones trash talking him.

#GetOverIt
    _____________
The Packers offered him 10 million a year and he said no. Then Cobb was able to replace him effectively and the 10 million a year was lowered which infuriated Jennings and allowed him to go and play for a second tier team. Pretty common knowledge actually.

The thing that I “Ponder” (pardon my pun) is, you knew it was a good chance you wouldn’t be re-signed by Green Bay because they generally don’t pay huge FA salaries to their own of-injured players, especially when they know Cobb & Nelson had more production than you & they went 12-4 (Seattle loss was bs) why did you go to the 10-6 division rival? As for brainwashing, sorry Greg, the Patriot Way is true brainwashing. What you experienced was a weak division now getting stronger & the King of the hill gloating in it’s current success.

“The Packers offered him 10 million a year and he said no. ”

Yes Jennings was originally offered $10 mil by TT, which is what I wrote. But the bidding didn’t stop there. When Jennings found out no one would pay his $14 mil/yr asking price, TT made another play for Jennings at $8 mil/yr. As the Milwaukee Sentinel reported, “Sources familiar with negotiations said Jennings had an offer averaging about $8 million from the Packers before he took a five-year contract from the Minnesota Vikings that averaged about $9 million.” So TT offered Jennings long-term deals at $10 and $8 mil/yr…which is my point. You can’t write off Jennings as some flop or has-been when your own GM was offering tens of millions of dollars to keep him.

I don’t think anyone realized that he was going to Jennings was going to be as vocal as he is right now.

I appreciate everything he did in GB. I don’t get why his grapes are so sour over this.

Ifyou go into an game or fight thinking you’re going to lose, you usually do.

  180. judsonjr says: Aug 7, 2013 5:44 PM

I have to wonder if Jennings hired a new PR firm starting prior to last year. We rarely heard anything from him in interviews or TV prior to that.

Then come the old spice commercials, loud mouth sister, etc. Now that he is gone he is a human quote machine.

I still think some of the bitterness goes from him being the primary guy in a 1-2 punch to being one of 5 guys that put up similar stats. And then when he was out of action, the guys behind him put up decent numbers at a fraction of the salary.

This is a surprise to no one. GB lives in the past in a fog of arrogance. To boot, GB fans, in spite of the team’s history, are among the most insecure in the league. Throw all the stones you can, but you might be better served preparing for a harsh reality check this year. Bottom of the division is a very real possibility for the broken down green machine. The Pack is like a rust-bucket with its wheels about to fall off that has been fitted with a corvette engine (A-rod). Sure to crash and burn.

  192. tokyosandblaster says: Aug 7, 2013 9:37 PM

    1. Greg Jennings thinks its bad that his former team knows it is the best. 2. All packers fans and most Vikings fans see the flaw in his argument. 3. The usual viking fan idiots try to turn his idiocy into some sort of truth, but fail miserably . Just business as usual on the PFT boards.

By the way, I thought Minnesotans were the kings of ugly… But after spending a few days in Ohiopyle, I have to say that there really are zero attractive Pennsylvanians. So Minnesota, you’re still the queens.

This is the phenomena fans of other teams, not all, do not understand. We have achieved a state of mind for expectations of sustained success and take pleasure in that success. The universal identity we share within that frame of mind enables us to withstand periods of little or no success. We feel strongly it will return. Kismet. And our numbers are huge. Where did we learn it…….we learned by extension through Lombardi and the Packer Way. Our grandparents and parents shared this deep attachment and it has been learned continuously since birth. If you hate it, you don’t understand it. That’s OK. If you ridicule it we unite and expel you. Do you now know why your insults have no effect on us? Because we know. We have it. And we know that you can only hope to have what we have. It’s that special. Good luck in your pursuit of the same. I hope you get there.

  195. kmartinson says: Aug 7, 2013 9:55 PM

The reality is now sinking in for Jennings that he did a money grab. He’s figuring out he’s going to be doubled all the time and he has a college qb throwing to him with a 50% completion rate. He’s also realizing that the Vikes have AP and the favorite target is Rudolph in the passing game.

Might want to give a jingle to Bernard Berrian to ask for some tips.

  197. imheretopointoutpackfanhypocrisy says: Aug 7, 2013 10:04 PM

The thing I got from the Jennings interview (I listened to all of it) was not the GreenBay touted themselves as much as they bashed on the other teams in the division. Sounds pretty classless coming from Packers brass. He also said that Rodgers could call out other players but he, himself was untouchable. I don’t see the problem here.

  198. igocommando says: Aug 7, 2013 10:13 PM

Well, that obviously struck a nerve with Packer fans. And here I thought most Packer fans had no nervous system at all. Seriously though, as a Viking fan I wish Greg could just keep his mouth shut or maybe just reply with a “no comment”.

  199. lnfinite says: Aug 7, 2013 10:26 PM

  200. Wisconsin77 says: Aug 7, 2013 10:34 PM

No surprise here. Brainwashing has been Ted “Timid” Thompson and Mike McLardy’s specialty ever since they got to Green Bay. All you need to do is go back and look at their big propaganda machine during the Favre Fiasco and how they brainwashed thousands of fans into hating Favre.

  201. nvpacker says: Aug 7, 2013 10:43 PM

At least in GB there was enough respect to keep his mouth shut and let his play do the the talking but in Minnesota not so much he needs to be like the fan base and throw out the stupid comments to get noticed. Its not hard to believe being brainwashed to believing you are the best would be a foreign concept and rejected by the viking faithful thats why you have been mired in futility since your inception.

  212. truthserum4u says: Aug 8, 2013 5:30 AM

  213. tokyosandblaster says: Aug 8, 2013 7:26 AM

So to casually sum up what I’ve read:

Greg Jennings says the Packers want their players to think that the Packers are the best team in the division. He thinks that wanting to be the best is a bad thing. The usual Vikings trolls agree with him. As such, Greg Jennings and Vikings fans think being the best is a bad thing.

    This explains SO MUCH.

That is what I call a bold prediction. Also, it’s exactly the attitude that Jennings was talking about.

  216. clemenza58 says: Aug 8, 2013 3:59 PM

Jennings is not wrong. I respect the Packers’ accomplishments and the support they receive, but the media and their fan base make it seem like everything good in football begins and ends in Green Bay. That’s the definition of arrogance right there.

The Packers have done a fabulous job marketing the uniqueness of being in the smallest sports market while operating under the guise of being “owned by the fans.” And good for them. All of that is nice and cute but Packer fans aren’t the only ones who live and die with their team.

They have their share of scumbags in their fan base just like everyone else. There is more than just one good organization in this league. A lot of people up in Wisconsin are delusional and think everything and everyone from up there is perfect.

I have one question for Packers fans: How much are you earning from your “ownership” of the team?

  217. stevent92 says: Aug 8, 2013 4:09 PM

  218. greatgallopingghost says: Aug 8, 2013 4:12 PM

‘It’s like everything that you know in Green Bay is like the best, the best, the best, the best, the best,” Jennings said. “And it’s like total brainwashing. And I think you don’t open your eyes to see what other teams have to offer unless you are in that position.”

    Like totally.

  219. jakat says: Aug 8, 2013 5:47 PM

Well, Jennings lasted one day. That’s better than he was doing in Green Bay, where he couldn’t even make it out of the office without NOT following orders. You have to remember Jennings doesn’t have AHAD or whatever they were calling Attention Disorder, it’s more like a case of reverse reaction to every other word, making what he does become wrong for every other word he hears. It’s in his ears. The inside cone that should be pointing in wiggles around, moving part way in and part way out. This happens at about the speed of normal conversation. Because it’s hard to understand he will do what he thinks is good, then forget about it because he’s not sure he should think it’s good.

This happened after he took a hit so hard against the 5 inch diameter pipes that run around the fans, ahead of the seats in Tampa Bay, in college. The pipe actually bent inward four inches. The helmet saved his life. Since that day he’s had this problem and he drops every other pass too, for the same reason we described above. We (the people of Packerland) wish him the best of good luck, and that he gets it turned back in. Clyde Mathews will be pumping iron on overtime until he comes to town. So, we might fix the problem with him, throwing a hit on the other side, or if that doesn’t work, Clyde will…
This just in: HOT LINE-BREAKING NEW’S
Vikings Coach Frazier just ordered a book: “On Hypnotic Brainwashing”, a former CIA classroom material the CIA bought the rights to in 2001 They now sell the book along with a course on using it. The coach will be gone for three days next week, in Washington DC to get his book and training. We hope Jennings will be in Minnesota when he returns, not in Green Bay, hypnotized.

Additionally, if GJ had used a different term or than brainwashed, such as “you’re trained to believe”, I bet none of this would have gotten any attention. BTW, he started by staying “I was brainwashed” he did accuse anyone of doing it.
