The receivers on the lower rungs of the Chargers depth chart should get plenty of time to show the team’s coaches their worth against the Seahawks on Thursday night.
Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego reports that Vincent Brown will be held out of the preseason opener because of a hamstring injury that kept him out of seven practices before returning to work on Tuesday. Brown is expected to make his preseason debut next week when the Chargers face the Bears.
When he does, it’s likely that he’ll be in the starting lineup with Malcolm Floyd. Danario Alexander’s torn ACL opened up that spot and, in turn, it will open up spots for other receivers to earn more time.
That will give Robert Meachem a chance to show that it was an aberration that he “sucked” last year and it will give rookie Keenan Allen a chance to make an impression in his first season. Chargers coach Mike McCoy told the team’s website recently that Allen had “a long way to go,” so an extra helping of playing time on Thursday will probably work just fine for him.
