Vontaze Burfict gets earful from Marvin Lewis after hit in practice

One of the reasons why linebacker Vontaze Burfict went undrafted last year was his habit of drawing flags for personal fouls.

Burfict picked up an alarming 16 personal fouls in his final 26 games at Arizona State, but overzealousness wasn’t a problem for him after signing with the Bengals as an undrafted free agent last year. He picked up one unnecessary roughness penalty while playing every game for Cincinnati and developing into a worthy starter on their defense.

While it wasn’t a problem last year, coach Marvin Lewis still is careful to make sure that Burfict knows when his aggressiveness comes close to crossing the line. Lewis chewed out Burfict after a play at one of the team’s joint practices with the Falcons that saw the linebacker jump on Falcons running back Steven Jackson’s back in a manner that touched off a brief altercation between the two players.

“I told him if he did that to me what he did to Steven, I would have hit him with a two by four,” Lewis said, via the Bengals website. “Steven should have gotten him in his sleep last night.”

Burfict said he felt he controlled himself in a confrontation he thinks was caused by Jackson’s running style, but Lewis obviously felt there was still value in offering a reminder that Burfict can’t stop doing what he did to overcome his draft day nightmare now that he’s established that he can be a productive NFL player.

You don’t want to mess with Steven Jackson. What was he thinking?

Between taz and harrison this defense will have a mean disposition this year.

I hate to admit I’m pulling for this guy to do well. You want a MLB to be nasty, dumb and fearless.

When this kid was a senior at Corona Centennial a he leveled ref as he was standing over the ball in the state title game. The ref threw a flag and signaled an ejection but the lead official talked him out of it.
He had actually committed to SC before de-committing and heading over to AZ State. That’s his right but he tore his arse with a lot of people.

The Bungles didn’t bungle with this guy. He’s been a good signing for them.

Having James Harrison around is going to bring out the nasty in this guy and as a Bengals fan I’m loving it.

The confrontation was caused by Jackson’s running style? Maybe Burfict should find another job. Lb’s jobs are to..you know….tackle the ball carrier.

    I love his aggression!

    Hey Marvin:

When you hire a turd, don’t be surprised when he acts like a turd.

I loved this guy as a player last year, and hope he can continue to grow this year. But I do not want his mentor to be Harrison. You can be a great player WITHOUT being a dirty player! Vontaze was that last year…….hopefully Marvin keeps them all in check.

burfict isn’t ‘aggressive’ so much as he is lazy and lacking in fundamentals. If he actually had technique and work ethic, he wouldn’t need to be jumping on a running back’s back as a linebacker. He’d get off blocks and wrap up the ball carrier.

Burfict led the Bengals in tackles last season with 127. That speaks for itself…

    @ ‘joetoronto’ says ……..

” Hey Marvin, When you hire a turd don’t be surprised if he acts like a turd ”

Say what you like about Burfict “joetoronto”, I guarantee there are 31 other NFL teams right now that wish they’d spent a late rounder last year and taken him. He looks a fine young player to me.

Alternatively of course ‘Joe’, you could spend a high first rounder on a LB, and see him sat at home retired 3 years later; (see Rolondo McClain for details).

I’m glad my team, Ravens, don’t have to face the Bengals until week 10. This is the team I fear the most in the AFCN.
