49ers sign Eric Wright

Eric Wright AP

At long last, cornerback Eric Wright has officially become a member of the 49ers.

Wright looked like he was headed to San Francisco last month when the 49ers agreed to a trade with the Buccaneers for Wright in exchange for a conditional draft pick, but the Niners failed him on his physical and Wright wound up getting cut in Tampa. Now, after Chris Culliver tore his ACL, the 49ers have circled back and signed Wright to a one-year deal. The team also announced that Wright was placed on the non-football injury list upon signing.

“We are pleased to welcome Eric to the 49ers organization and look forward to his contributions,” General Manager Trent Baalke said in a statement from the team. “Eric is currently tending to a personal matter and he will join the team as soon as possible.”

The writing for this move started going on the wall even before the Niners lost Culliver as Baalke said that Wright joining the team remained a possibility shortly after the 49ers rescinded the trade. Things heated up once Culliver went down and now Wright is a 49er.

He’ll join Tramaine Brock, Nnamdi Asomugha, and Perrish Cox in a competition for playing time behind Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown. They waived cornerback Lowell Rose, who was waived the first time it looked like Wright was coming to town and then re-signed, to make room for Wright on the roster.

    1. Kicked off of USC
    2. Got death threats off the Browns
    3. Cut by the Lions, a bottom 5 D
    4. After Talib goes on a shooting spree, he still got cut.
    5. 49ers sign him, who thinks that this will work? lol

  8. yondo123 says: Aug 8, 2013 4:23 PM

Obviously things have changed with the injury to Culliver, but how many of us called this happening after he failed the physical–niners got the pick back–and cut by bucs.

Baalke, Marathe, & Harbaugh strike again.

    Go niners

Wright must have gotten that note from his doctor that said he could come back to work.

After further review, we need a DB more than we are concerned about a possible boo-boo. The play is reversed. Second down.

Hey Eric – make sure they really put you on NFI and that you’re not due any bonuses when you come off. We all know SF has a penchant for sneakily avoiding paying their players.

Wow…It’s a MIRACLE!! only 16 days after Eric Wright was traded from Tampa to S.F. for a late round draft choice, then flunked his physical…he has now passed his physical and has been signed by the 9ers! Now that S.F. doesn’t have to give up a draft choice for him, he is suddenly perfectly healthy! The Commissioner’s office needs to do an investigation on this and penalize the 49ers! They broke the agreement the two teams had in place when it became clear that the Bucs were through with Wright one way or the other, and cheated Tampa out of a draft choice. Wright was healthy all offseason and participated in the Bucs OTA’s…they only flunked him as an excuse! They are a bunch of no class scumbags!

Carlos Rogers is overrated and Terrell Brown is the weakest CB in the league when it comes to one-on-one matchups. With the exception of Nnamdi the DB group is still a scrap heap of scrubs just like their WRs corps.

  23. stopthemadness101 says: Aug 8, 2013 4:38 PM

    How incredibly shady…

  24. 64post says: Aug 8, 2013 4:38 PM

Failed phyical= saved 6th rd pick. That’s a good business decision but bad business relations with the Bucs.

  25. fpimentel72 says: Aug 8, 2013 4:38 PM

Now since we have Eric Wright, we are going to cut Parrish cox, cox didn’t show me anything, we have a great group of guys in the DB position. Wright is going to compete with Rogers, I don’t care for him to much, I mean he is good and everything but if you have Terrell Brown on one side and wright on the other side, that a great combo.

  26. thestrategyexpert says: Aug 8, 2013 4:41 PM

Nice fleece job. The Bucs should have kept him and hoped he could heel up and build a trade market for him. Or don’t sign him in the first place, but they needed to do one of the two and the GM failed on both. Just like he did with Myron Lewis who was another bad decision that just got released. These Bucs are incredibly poor at making football decisions. Until they can get a competent GM, this team is a joke.

  31. smashscott says: Aug 8, 2013 4:44 PM

Does it seem against etiquette or an unwritten rule for the 49ers to reject the Bucs trade for Wright, claiming he passed a physical…to sign him weeks later?

If other teams had interest in him before, wouldn’t they lose interest at word that he failed a physical? Did San Fran just manipulate the market?

This seems as slimeball as the Boldin trade.

  36. gwiggity says: Aug 8, 2013 4:48 PM

jeagan1999 and any other idiot who thinks the Bucs still deserve a pic, you aren’t too bright!

The Niners traded for Wright and gave up a late round to the Bucs. They had every right to still cancel the trade if he failed a physical (whether he did or not)

The point is, after the trade fell through, the Bucs didn’t have to turn around and release him like they did making him a FA. Now any team had a chance to sign him over the last 2 weeks, but they didn’t. Niners swooped back in.

    Stop being dumb!

  37. ninerswilldominatelikebefore says: Aug 8, 2013 4:50 PM

Just to all those who think the 49ers somehow failed him on his physical to get him for free…

…um…that wouldn’t have happened if the Bucs didn’t release him. Everyone KNEW they were going to release him and they were lucky the 49ers were willing to do a trade.

Also, he was signed today and IMMEDIATELY placed on the Non-Football Injury list. The failed physical is legit. Any other team could have moved in and signed him. None of them did.

That’s pretty hilarious. Browner, Winfield, Thomas, and Chancellor aren’t “good” according to you.

Just what precisely was “scumbag” about the Boldin trade? The Ravens were about to release him, John called Jim and asked if the 49ers were interested in keeping him off the market, the 49ers were interested and gave up the 199th pick. It was routine as could be.

Say what you want about me, but I speak football facts. I’m the Football Oracle. I break it down like no other football expert can.

49ers fans let me serve you all a dish of cold reality.

Harbaugh and Baalke are not as good in the draft as you all think. They’re meat and potatoes guys. They can draft Linemen,LBs, RBs, and TEs….and the jury’s still out on the LBs, because Singletary developed 3/4ths of that starting LB corps, and he’s not there anymore.

When it comes to the skill positions. They strike out draft after draft. They can’t identify skill position players or develop them. That’s why CB and WR is the weakest spot on your squad. Just scrap heaps of scrubs.

The Seahawks drafted a solid WR in Doug Baldwin and a All Pro CB who the 49ers past on in the draft…..WHO PLAYED FOR JIM HARBAUGH IN COLLEGE!!!!!THEY CAN’T EVEN DRAFT SKILL POSITION PLAYERS THAT’S RIGHT UNDER THEIR NOSE…NOT IN THEIR OWN BACKYARD..BUT IN THEIR FRONT YARD..PRACTICALLY IN THEIR OWN HOUSE!!!

Chew on that 49er faithful. Harbaugh is great with Scott Mcgloughan, and Mike Nolan players, building off of Singletary’s foundation…it’ll be something to see what he can do with his own players. In a couple of years Don’t be surprised if there’s scrap heaps of scrubs everywhere not just WRs and DBs.

You ignore the fact that there were other glaring needs that had to be addressed in the last 3 Baalke drafts though. I’d say that our drafts haven’t been too shabby. Just look at Aldon Smith, who was 5.5 sacks short of Oakland’s sack total as a team last year, ALL BY HIMSELF!

Doug Baldwin went UDFA so it was his choice where he ended up at. Richard Sherman is a dolt who never got along with Harbaugh. I’m sure Harbaugh is well aware of his football potential yet there is no point in bringing along someone who has zero desire to play for you and would probably only cause tension in the locker room.

Personally, I’m more of a fan of such great draft picks by the raiderps like Heyward Bey, McClain and Jamarcus Russell.

This is just all together stupid. Real headline, “The Niners Cut A Baller For A Skrewup”. What happened to the Niners organization that represented humility, pride, class, and dignity? Why choose this guy over a rookie who’s nose is clean and has been balling like crazy in camp. Trust me, Wright is not the missing key to you winning a Super Bowl this year. High up dummies. I used to be a huge 49er fan, but I’m not at all in agreement with how shady this organization is now. Did you all know that Rose took advantage of every opportunity he had in camp, which was very few bc the CB coach never showed the undrafted rookies love. They didn’t get a fair shot, or were treated right, but worked twice as hard to get some reps. Did you know Rose #40 rookie picked off Kaepernick while defending AJ Jenkins and had 4 pass breakups all in the same damn day of camp. I bet you didn’t. Did you know that the CB position coach never played the CB position at a competitive level. They cut Rose the day before the pre-season game, that’s low like the bottom of the barrel.
