Vick to start Friday, Foles starts next week

The Jets went with veteran Mark Sanchez as their starting quarterback for their preseason opener instead of rookie Geno Smith.

The Eagles are also going the veteran route for their first game of the summer. Coach Chip Kelly announced Thursday that Michael Vick will be the first quarterback on the field against the Patriots on Friday night.

Kelly was adamant on Wednesday that there was nothing to read into his choice and he made that point again Thursday by saying that Vick is starting because it is his day to work with the first team. He said Vick and Nick Foles would each get about 12-20 snaps while splitting time with the first team and he got a jump on next week by announcing that Foles would get the first crack in the second preseason game.

The order that the two quarterbacks play won’t matter all that much, but the same can’t be said of their performance. We’ve heard plenty of reports from practice about how the two quarterbacks have done, but live action is a different and more significant ball of wax.

    splitting reps.

    i like it.

Considering Vick took 12 snaps in all 4 games combined last preseason before hurting his hand, Chip has high expectations of the evaluation process occurring in live action. Foles could win by default. Or the other way around, who knows.

Hopefully Vick takes a helmet to the acl.

I think everybody knows Vick will win the job, then Foles will be starting at some point during the season(Vick always gets hurt).

    Riley Cooper sucks.

If he follows normal preseason structure that means Foles will get FAR MORE snaps with the first team than Vick…. just a thought.

This is the silliest QB controversy I’ve ever seen. Everyone knows that Vick is the starter. The offense is made for him.

Let me show you something: In all of the preseason, you will never see Vick under center with the 2nd team O-line. You WILL see Foles with the 2nd team during a preseason game O-line. Why? Because you protect your starter!

  16. reeggss says: Aug 8, 2013 1:22 PM

    Who is Riley Cooper?

  17. kmatic1 says: Aug 8, 2013 1:25 PM

YES! Vick is way better…Suck it Fole(ys)

  18. greymares says: Aug 8, 2013 1:28 PM

I understand the sentiment against Vick. He has had a large body of work. But what have you people seen in 6 games played behind a makeshift offensive line that tells you Foles can’t play ?

  19. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Aug 8, 2013 1:34 PM

So Vick really is the starter like we all have been saying all along.

OK Chip whatever you say we will play along like you have a QB competition on your hands. “Vick goes first but he is not the starter.” Whatever

Have we asked Riley Cooper and Hugh Douglas what they think of Donovan McNabb’s take on Dick Vermeil’s opinion?

  23. steelerben says: Aug 8, 2013 3:10 PM

I don’t have a horse in the race, but if your quarterback situation is drawing parallels to the Jet’s quarterback situation it is time to start feeling concern.

Amazed how little you people know about football that post here
