Fred Davis wants to plan his spontaneity better

Fred Davis, Perry Paganelli AP

When Fred Davis looked like he had been hit with a cattle prod, the Redskins were hit with a penalty.

The Redskins tight end was flagged for an excessive celebration after catching a touchdown last night, shaking wildly and then falling to the ground and shaking some more.

I don’t even know. It was spontaneous. I don’t know what I was doing, actually,” Davis said, via Mike Jones of the Washington Post. “I’ve got to put more thought into it. I cost my team a penalty, so it wasn’t a good celebration. . . .

“I just spazzed out. It was dumb. . . . I’m definitely going to come up with a better plan next time.”

Actually, having no plan at all would be the best plan, thereby guaranteeing the spontaneity of the act.

How about doing what Barry Sanders used to do: score a TD, hand the ball to the ref and move on?

He looked like a typical Skins fan which which is to say he looked like a jerk. What vet player does this in an exhibition game for God’s sake?

  3. hinksonri says: Aug 9, 2013 9:38 AM

Because the Celebration is the important thing, right? There’s no “I won’t do this to my team again”.. Nope, it was “I’ll do it differently next time”..

What a fevered ego… Just another in the list of pro athletes..

    Planned spontaneity………… Just brilliant

But wait…Being spontaneous cost his team a penalty. So wouldn’t the best plan be to have a plan so that you aren’t spontaneous?

You could always just hand the ball to the referee, Fred.

    Great headline!

He was trying to entertain the crowd who paid full price tickets for a meaningless preseason opener.

“In light of this new evidence of Mr. Davis’ inability to control his spontaneous urges, the court rules in favor of the Plaintiff, Ms. Makini Chaka”

its the pre-season. cry about it. hand the ball of like Barry? he’s not Barry. he looked stupid, he even said he did. leave it at that.

  12. umainebearman says: Aug 9, 2013 10:33 AM

To be honest Davis should get all he can in preseason because he’ll probably end up suspended yet again. If he doesn’t then its not like he will be in the end zone that often anyway.

The One-and-Done-Skins know this is the best time of the year for them. After that pathetic tanking in the playoffs it’s hard to blame them.

He said he was spontaneous last time and cost his team a penalty, so he would plan better for next time so he wouldn’t have the penalty. Yet somehow the writer of the article says don’t plan again next time and risk the penalty, and the comments all give him crap about planned spontaneity. Maybe I read the article wrong but it sounds like a no win situation for Fred.

Excessive celebration is one of the dumbest penalties ever made up…. guys can’t even celebrate or have a little fun when they score people need to get there heads out and enjoy life and not take the GAME so serious.

  16. rasta028 says: Aug 9, 2013 11:34 AM

Or like you said that you could just hand the ref the ball

    Right. The quote was
“I don’t know what I was doing, actually,” he said. “I’ve got to put more thought into it.”

Fred doesn’t strike me as a guy who’s excessively careful with his pronoun use, but it seems like “it” refers to “what he was doing”, not his celebration. Davis is by no means one of the smarter players in the league, but he is a guy who has gotten no credit for totally changing and reforming his entire lifestyle after his marijuana suspension two years ago.

The real point here is that this story seems like an unnecessary cheap shot. Players draw excessive celebration penalties all the time, and just because Davis has had attitude problems in the past and wasn’t clear in his response is no reason to single him out.

gods’s team will not be stopped? what does that have to do with the redskins, naryland’s 3rd best team?

    @ scoobies05:

    Where’s “naryland”?

Is that anywhere near J. M. Barrie’s “Neverland”?
Or perhaps it’s close to Shangri-La?
    Or maybe Tir-Na-Nog?

  21. Grulks says: Aug 9, 2013 12:48 PM

its a preseason game. everyone gets you are excited, but c’mon MAN! Its not like you are facing real defenses. everyone knows teams show vanilla defence in preasons so as not to give up excess tape.
if thats not enough reason to not celebrate, how you practice is how youre gonna play. so if in preason youre getting stupid penalties, its likely to transfer over in reg season games.

Act like youve been there before. Not like a turd. Or not, I’m not a skins fan

  25. bigjd says: Aug 9, 2013 3:21 PM

Just another bad decision. This guy could be a great player, he just has to stop doing stupid things.

  26. johndavisrealty2011 says: Aug 9, 2013 5:41 PM

How many of you criticizing Davis for his celebration are Giants fans? I don’t agree with penalizing celebrations, but what he did is no worse than Victor Cruz’s salsa dancing after every score. He wasn’t taunting the opponent, so it shouldn’t have been a penalty. Period.

  27. lennydpocketqb says: Aug 17, 2013 12:03 PM

I’m a Gians fan and I say more celebration. This is ridiculous that they want less theatrics. Jeers NFL. Jeers!
